Google is the rare large employer whose roster on this wiki genuinely behaves like an alumni network. Three groups make it up, and they barely overlap. The first is the artificial intelligence research lineage that runs through Google Brain and Google DeepMind and holds both halves of a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The second is a run of operating executives who left to become chief executives elsewhere, at Yahoo, Pinterest, Snowflake, Palo Alto Networks and YouTube. The third and largest by headcount is a tail of engineers and product managers who left in the past few years to found Y Combinator startups.
Background
Google was founded in 1998 and reorganized under the holding company Alphabet Inc. in 2015. It acquired DeepMind in January 2014 and merged it with Google Brain in 2023, which is why the AI research membership here carries both names. The company's scale means an alumni category of this kind is necessarily a sample rather than a census, and the sample is weighted toward research, senior management and recent departures into startups.
A separate group of members is attached to Google as investors or directors rather than as staff. They are recorded here because the institutional connection is biographically significant, not because they were employees.
The artificial intelligence lineage
Geoffrey Hinton spent years at Google after decades of research into artificial neural networks, work that produced the modern field and the nickname "the Godfather of AI". Ilya Sutskever, who trained under Hinton in Toronto, worked at Google Brain before OpenAI. Hartmut Neven moved from face and object recognition into robotics and then quantum computing at Google.
The DeepMind side arrived by acquisition. Demis Hassabis is co-founder and chief executive of Google DeepMind. Shane Legg co-founded DeepMind Technologies with him in 2010 and stayed on as chief AGI scientist after the Google acquisition. Mustafa Suleyman, the third co-founder, later ran Microsoft AI. John M. Jumper is a director at Google DeepMind and the lead researcher behind AlphaFold, the system that predicts protein structures from amino acid sequences and whose team released predicted structures for more than 214 million proteins. Jumper and Hassabis shared half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for that work, with the other half going to David Baker for computational protein design.
The chief executives who left
The second group left Google to run other companies. Marissa Mayer spent thirteen years at Google as one of its earliest employees before becoming president and chief executive of Yahoo from 2012 to 2017. Nikesh Arora held senior positions at Google and then SoftBank before taking over Palo Alto Networks in 2018. Sridhar Ramaswamy ran Google's advertising business, founded the ad-free search engine Neeva, and has led Snowflake since 2024. Bill Ready has run Pinterest since 2022. Mo Gawdat spent more than a decade at the company, including a period as chief business officer of Google X, before turning to writing and public speaking. Colin Huang worked at Google before founding the Chinese e-commerce company Pinduoduo.
Those who stayed and rose form the counterweight. Sundar Pichai is chief executive of both Google and Alphabet. Eric Schmidt was chief executive from 2001 to 2011 and executive chairman until 2015. Susan Wojcicki rented her Menlo Park garage to the founders in 1998 and led YouTube from 2014 to 2023, and Neal Mohan succeeded her there in 2023. Chris Sacca left to found Lowercase Capital and make early investments in Twitter, Uber and Instagram.
A further strand is connected to Google as backers rather than as staff. David Cheriton is the Stanford computer scientist and Distributed Systems Group founder whose early investment is part of the company's origin story. Michael Moritz backed it from Sequoia Capital. Paul Otellini sat on Google's board while running Intel.
The Y Combinator tail
The largest single block in this roster by headcount is the most recent. Former Google engineers and product managers appear across successive Y Combinator batches, including Adhityaa Chandrasekar of Subtrace, Jasper Story of Yarn, Maddy Yip of Retrofit, Roksana Baleshzar of TectoAI, Rakesh Goyal of Velt, Jonathan Chavez of ZeroEval, Harvey Hu of Altrina, Arjun Lalwani of Ralo, and Derrick Xin and Jason Cai, who co-founded Fractal Labs together. Shaun Modi followed an earlier version of the same path, designing at Google and then joining Airbnb in its early years. Arjun Maheswaran, Derek Modzelewski, Prithvi Ramakrishnan and Vivek Jayaram all passed through Google engineering or research before founding companies of their own.
This group is what makes the category grow, and it is the part that no published list of famous Google alumni contains.
