Derrick Xin is an American entrepreneur and co-founder of Fractal Labs, a startup working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and gaming. Fractal Labs was part of Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch.[1]

Career

Before founding Fractal Labs, Xin worked at Google Research and on Google's ad ranking systems.[2] He studied applied mathematics at Stanford University and Princeton University.

Xin co-founded Fractal Labs alongside Alan Du and Jason Cai. The company describes itself as "a team of researchers (ex Google Research) and engineers (ex Google, Virtu) pushing the frontier in AI x Gaming." The startup is categorized as a consumer company and operates remotely within the United States. As of late 2025, Fractal Labs had approximately four employees and was actively hiring software engineers at compensation levels of $200,000–$300,000 with equity participation.[3]

Xin's co-founders bring complementary backgrounds to the venture. Alan Du previously worked as a quantitative trader at Virtu Financial and Volant and studied applied mathematics at Princeton. Jason Cai was formerly an engineer at Duolingo and Google and studied computer engineering at Princeton.

The founding team's combination of research experience in machine learning and practical engineering expertise in gaming and quantitative finance reflects Fractal Labs' focus on applying AI techniques to gaming applications, though specific details about the company's products have not been widely disclosed.
