Apple Inc. does not produce a founder diaspora the way PayPal or Palantir did, and this roster shows why. The people gathered here are overwhelmingly the company's own senior officers and directors rather than alumni who left to build competitors: the two co-founders, three chief executives' worth of operating leadership, the industrial designer, the software heads, and a board seat that has been filled by outsiders from politics and retail. Only at the edges does a second group appear, engineers who spent long stretches inside Apple's frameworks and hardware teams and then left to start small companies.
Background
Apple was founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who designed and hand-built the Apple I and Apple II. The company's structure has long been unusually centralized, with a small executive team reporting to the chief executive and comparatively few autonomous divisions. That structure is the reason this category looks the way it does. Apple's product organizations rarely spin out; the people who leave tend to leave individually and late in their careers.
This grouping covers people who have worked at Apple, both those who have since moved on and those still in post. It is descriptive, not a claim about departure.
The executive team and the board
Tim Cook became chief executive in August 2011 after serving as chief operating officer, having previously run the global supply chain, sales and operations. Jeff Williams spent twenty-seven years at the company, rose through operations, took over as chief operating officer in 2015 and retired in 2025, having overseen the Apple Watch and the health technology program. Phil Schiller joined the executive team when Jobs returned in 1997, spent more than two decades as senior vice president of worldwide marketing, and now serves as an Apple Fellow responsible for the App Store and Apple Events.
The product side is represented by Jony Ive, who led industrial design for close to three decades in partnership with Jobs and shaped the iMac, iPod and iPhone generations, and by Scott Forstall, senior vice president of iOS Software from 2007 to 2012 and head of the team that built the software for the iPhone and iPad. Angela Ahrendts came from Burberry to run retail from 2014 to 2019. Bozoma Saint John held senior marketing roles at Apple Music before moving on to Uber, Endeavor and Netflix. Jimmy Iovine arrived through Beats after co-founding Interscope Records.
The board contributes members from outside the industry entirely. Al Gore, Vice President of the United States from 1993 to 2001, and Mickey Drexler, the retail executive who rebuilt Gap and J.Crew, both sat as directors. Eric Schmidt served on the board until August 2009, resigning as the product lines of Apple and Google converged in mobile.
The engineers who left
The second group is smaller and more recent, and it is the part of this roster that behaves like an alumni network. Kyle Macomber spent roughly fourteen years at Apple as a founding member of the SwiftUI framework team and later manager of the Swift Standard Library team, then founded Bitrig to generate native Swift and SwiftUI code from natural language. Dennis Pilarinos took the opposite route: he founded Buddybuild, sold it to Apple in 2018, and afterwards started Unblocked. Harsh Bhatt left Apple engineering to co-found Autumn Labs, which builds monitoring and control software for industrial robots and manufacturing lines.
Several members passed through Apple early and are better known for what came next. Reid Hoffman joined Apple Computer in the mid-1990s and then Fujitsu, years before co-founding LinkedIn. Marc Benioff worked a summer in the Macintosh division as a student before Oracle and Salesforce. Shantanu Narayen worked on Apple's desktop and collaboration products before Adobe. Shan Mohta was a hardware engineer at Apple before co-founding Vendra, Fern Morrison worked on batteries and materials before founding Iron Grid, Ryan Johnston and Raymond Allie both interned at Apple before Y Combinator, and Neil Nie completed several Apple internships in computer vision and machine learning during his academic career.
