Amazon Web Services is Amazon's cloud computing division, and its roster on this wiki has an unusual shape: one figure at the very top and, below him, almost nothing but early-career engineers who left within a few years to found startups. Andy Jassy built and ran AWS for close to two decades before taking over as chief executive of Amazon. Everyone else here worked as a software development engineer, a solutions manager or an intern, and then went through Y Combinator. There is no middle.
Background
AWS launched in 2006 and grew into the largest cloud infrastructure business in the world, selling computing, storage and delivery services on a metered basis to companies, governments and individuals. Its engineering organization is very large and its output on this wiki is correspondingly junior: the people recorded here are almost all documented for what they built after leaving, with AWS appearing in their biographies as an early line on a career page.
That pattern is worth stating plainly, because a category named for an employer usually implies seniority. This one does not. It is best read as a training-ground record rather than a leadership one.
The one senior figure
Andy Jassy joined Amazon in 1997 when it was still primarily an online bookseller. He spent nearly two decades building and running Amazon Web Services out of its early-2000s beginnings into the division that came to dominate enterprise technology, and in July 2021 he succeeded Jeff Bezos as president and chief executive of Amazon. He is the only member of this roster whose AWS career is the reason he is documented at all.
The engineers who left for Y Combinator
The rest of the membership is a single cohort in everything but name. Anders Lie worked as a software development engineer at AWS from 2022 to 2023 on identity management for low-code services, then founded a consultancy and later co-founded Magnitude. Emanuel Gordis was an AWS software engineer from 2023 to 2024, having earlier operated a research nuclear reactor, and founded Trim to build a physics simulation model. Jake Yatvitskiy worked at AWS as an engineer and as an intern before co-founding Haystack Software. Almo Sutedjo was employed at AWS alongside stints at HubSpot and Microsoft before co-founding Comena.
Hunter Brooks worked at Capital One and AWS, picking up machine learning experience before founding Ellipsis. Marcello De Bernardi did data science and software engineering work at AWS on cloud infrastructure for machine learning before co-founding Plexe AI in London. Mohamed Khalifa was a Customer Solutions Manager helping enterprise clients adopt cloud technology before founding RadMate AI. Sherry Liu and Daksh Gupta both interned at AWS before co-founding Tamarind Bio and Greptile respectively, and Rhim Shah held internships at both AWS and Google before founding Arva AI. Dillon Nys, the one member carrying the AWS category tag rather than a mention, founded Celest.
