Hunter Brooks is an American entrepreneur and software engineer who is the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ellipsis, an artificial intelligence developer tool company that provides automated code reviews and bug fixes. Ellipsis was part of Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch.[1]
Career
Brooks has a background in astrophysics and is largely self-taught as a software developer. Before founding Ellipsis, he worked at Capital One and Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he gained experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He also contributed to research in cosmology, resulting in academic publications.[2]
Brooks co-founded Ellipsis to address inefficiencies in the software code review process. The company's product integrates with GitHub repositories and uses large language models (LLMs) to automatically review code on every commit of every pull request, identifying logical bugs, style guide violations, and antipatterns. The tool supports all programming languages and is designed to augment, rather than replace, human code reviewers.[3]
As of its public metrics, Ellipsis has been installed in over 67,000 GitHub repositories, serves more than 400 companies, and reviews approximately 3,900 commits daily. The company raised a $2 million seed round and reported 30% month-over-month growth.[3]
Ellipsis participated in Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch. Brooks has discussed the company's development and the broader landscape of AI-assisted software development in podcast appearances, including an episode of the Tesoro AI Podcast in November 2024, where he addressed the challenges and advantages of launching an AI startup in the competitive AI DevTools space.
