Mary Martha Cosby (née Jefferson, formerly Harris; born October 17, 1972) is an American television personality and Pentecostal pastor based in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is best known as an original cast member of the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, which premiered in November 2020. Cosby's appearance on the series drew widespread public attention to her role as the leader of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church, a congregation she inherited from her late grandmother, as well as to the unusual circumstances of her marriage to her step-grandfather, Robert Cosby Sr. The marriage, which took place in 1998, was described by Cosby as fulfilling a condition of her grandmother's will. Throughout her tenure on the show, Cosby has been a polarizing figure, facing criminal charges that were later dismissed, allegations of running a cult-like organization, civil lawsuits, and intense public scrutiny over the operations of her church. She departed the series after its second season but returned for the fifth season in 2024. In early 2026, Cosby faced personal tragedy when her son, Robert Cosby Jr., died at the age of 23.

Early Life

Mary Martha Jefferson was born on October 17, 1972, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She grew up in a family deeply rooted in Pentecostal ministry. Her grandmother, Rosie Belle Jefferson (also known as Rosalind Jefferson), was the founder and longtime leader of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in Salt Lake City, a congregation that had served the local community for decades.[1]

Cosby was raised within the Faith Temple congregation and became involved in church activities from a young age. The church, which operates within the Pentecostal tradition, was a central fixture in her upbringing and would later become a defining element of her public identity.

Before her marriage to Robert Cosby Sr., Mary was previously married to a man named Dana Harris. That marriage ended in divorce in 1998.[2] The circumstances surrounding her subsequent marriage to Robert Cosby Sr. — her step-grandfather — became a subject of significant public discussion. According to Mary Cosby, her grandmother's will stipulated that she should marry Robert Cosby Sr., who had been married to her grandmother, as a condition for inheriting the family's church and business empire. The marriage took place in 1998, the same year as her divorce from Harris.[3]

The marriage between Mary and Robert Cosby Sr. drew scrutiny from the local community and later from a national audience when she joined The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Robert Cosby Sr. had been married to Mary's grandmother, Rosalind Jefferson, making him Mary's step-grandfather by marriage. While not a biological relationship, the familial connection generated considerable discussion in media coverage of the show.[4]

Career

Faith Temple Pentecostal Church

Following her grandmother's death, Mary Cosby assumed leadership of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in Salt Lake City. In her role as pastor, Cosby oversaw the congregation and the various business holdings associated with the church and family estate. The church and its affiliated enterprises, which reportedly included restaurants and other commercial properties, formed a significant part of the Cosby family's financial portfolio.[5]

Cosby's leadership of Faith Temple became a recurring storyline on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Fellow cast member Cameron Williams (known mononymously as Cameron) publicly accused Cosby of operating the church in a cult-like manner, alleging that Cosby exerted undue control over congregants and their finances. These allegations were explored extensively during the show's first and second seasons and received additional coverage in media outlets.[6]

Reports later emerged that the church had experienced significant difficulties, with some accounts indicating that the church had been shut down or had ceased regular operations.[7]

In addition to the allegations surrounding her church leadership, Cosby faced a civil lawsuit related to claims of embezzlement from the church's funds. The lawsuit alleged financial improprieties in the management of church resources.[8] In 2024, it was reported that Cosby herself had filed a lawsuit, though details of the case remained part of ongoing legal proceedings.[9]

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

Seasons 1 and 2 (2020–2022)

Mary Cosby was announced as an original cast member of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City prior to the series premiere in November 2020. The show, the tenth city in the Real Housewives franchise, featured Cosby alongside Heather Gay, Lisa Barlow, Meredith Marks, Whitney Rose, and Jen Shah.[10]

From the outset, Cosby's storylines on the show centered on her marriage to her step-grandfather, her role as a Pentecostal pastor, and her sometimes contentious relationships with her castmates. Her frank and often provocative statements during confessionals and group interactions made her one of the more discussed cast members in the franchise during its initial seasons.

During the second season, Cosby faced criminal charges related to harboring a runaway minor. The charges drew significant media attention.[11] However, the criminal charges were subsequently dropped. Cosby publicly celebrated the dismissal of the charges, and the development was covered by multiple entertainment news outlets.[12][13]

At the conclusion of the second season, Cosby notably did not attend the season reunion taping. In January 2022, Variety reported that Cosby had opted not to participate in the reunion and that her future on the show was uncertain. The report indicated that Cosby had effectively departed the series.[14]

Departure and Return (2022–2024)

Following her departure after season two, Cosby was absent from seasons three and four of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Her absence coincided with continued public discussion of the controversies that had surrounded her time on the show, including the criminal charges (which were dropped), the cult allegations related to her church, and the embezzlement lawsuit.

In 2024, it was announced that Cosby would return to the series for its fifth season. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed her return to the cast, marking a notable comeback for the polarizing personality.[15] The fifth season premiere date and first trailer were released later that year, with Cosby featured prominently in promotional materials.[16][17]

Season 7 and Production Pause (2026)

In early 2026, production on the seventh season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City was underway when it was paused following the death of Cosby's son, Robert Cosby Jr. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that production resumed in March 2026 but that Cosby was not filming at that time, as she dealt with the personal tragedy.[18]

People reported that the show began filming season seven without Cosby following the pause in production.[19] TMZ reported that when production resumed, the cast addressed the loss of Cosby's son on camera.[20]

Personal Life

Mary Cosby has been married to Robert Cosby Sr. since 1998. Robert Cosby Sr. was previously married to Mary's grandmother, Rosalind Jefferson, making him Mary's step-grandfather. The couple's marriage, which Cosby has stated was a condition of her grandmother's will in order to inherit the family's church and business holdings, has been a subject of sustained public interest, particularly after the premiere of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.[21]

Mary and Robert Cosby Sr. had a son together, Robert Cosby Jr. In late February 2026, Robert Cosby Jr. died at the age of 23. The Daily Mail reported that his death was due to a suspected drug overdose.[22]

Following his death, Cosby posted a tribute to her son on social media. E! News reported on the tribute, describing it as a "devastating" message honoring Robert Jr.[23]

A funeral for Robert Cosby Jr. was held in Utah on March 7, 2026. Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey attended and later described the service as "spirited" and full of "love."[22] Bailey also detailed a phone conversation she had with Cosby following Robert Jr.'s death, expressing her support for the grieving mother.[24]

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards also attended the memorial service, describing it as "incredibly moving." In an exclusive interview with People, Richards shared that she wanted to show up for her fellow Real Housewives cast member during the difficult time.[25]

Bravo executive and host Andy Cohen was unable to attend the funeral but publicly addressed his absence, explaining the circumstances that prevented him from being present.[26]

Legal Issues

Mary Cosby has been involved in several legal matters during her public career. During her time on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, she faced criminal charges for allegedly harboring a runaway minor. The Salt Lake Tribune reported on the charges in September 2022.[27] The charges were subsequently dropped, with People reporting on the dismissal and Cosby's public reaction to the development.[28]

Separately, Cosby faced a civil lawsuit involving allegations of embezzlement from her church. ABC4 reported on the lawsuit, which alleged that Cosby had mismanaged or misappropriated funds belonging to Faith Temple Pentecostal Church.[29]

In September 2024, The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Cosby had filed her own lawsuit, though the full details and outcome of the litigation were not immediately reported.[30]

Television Filmography

Cosby's primary television credit is her role on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. According to her IMDb profile, her television work has been concentrated on the Bravo franchise.[31] She appeared as a main cast member during seasons one and two (2020–2022), was absent from seasons three and four, and returned for season five in 2024.[32]

Recognition

Mary Cosby's tenure on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City made her one of the more recognizable figures from the franchise's Salt Lake City installment. Her storylines — particularly her marriage to her step-grandfather and the controversies surrounding her church — generated extensive media coverage and public discussion.

The circumstances of her son's death in 2026 brought an outpouring of support from across the Real Housewives franchise, with cast members from multiple cities attending or acknowledging the memorial service. The response underscored Cosby's connections within the broader Bravo television community.[18][19]
