Tilman Joseph Fertitta (born June 25, 1957) is an American businessman, diplomat, and television personality who has built one of the largest privately held hospitality and entertainment empires in the United States. As the owner and chief executive officer of Landry's, Inc., he oversees a portfolio of more than 600 restaurants, hotels, casinos, and entertainment venues.[1] In September 2017, Fertitta reached an agreement to purchase the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for $2.2 billion, making it one of the most expensive transactions in American professional sports history at the time. A native of Galveston, Texas, Fertitta rose from modest beginnings in the Gulf Coast restaurant trade to become one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States, described by Forbes as the "World's Richest Restaurateur." In May 2025, he began serving as the 21st United States Ambassador to Italy and 6th Ambassador to San Marino, appointed by President Donald Trump.[2] He also gained national visibility as the star of the CNBC reality television series Billion Dollar Buyer.[3]
Early Life
Tilman Joseph Fertitta was born on June 25, 1957, in Galveston, Texas. He is of Italian and Sicilian descent, part of a prominent Galveston family with deep roots in the Texas Gulf Coast region. The Fertitta family had long been involved in business and hospitality enterprises along the Texas coast, and Tilman grew up immersed in the restaurant and entertainment industries from an early age.
Galveston, a historic island city known for its tourism, beaches, and seafood culture, provided a natural environment for Fertitta's early exposure to the hospitality trade. The Gulf Coast's vibrant restaurant scene and its reliance on tourism would later inform his approach to building a national dining and entertainment empire. Fertitta has spoken publicly about learning the fundamentals of business and customer service during his formative years in Galveston, experiences that shaped his entrepreneurial ambitions.
The Fertitta name carries significant recognition in American business circles. Tilman Fertitta is a cousin of Frank Fertitta III and Lorenzo Fertitta, who became prominent through their ownership of Station Casinos and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). While the family branches pursued different business paths, all demonstrated an affinity for the hospitality, gaming, and entertainment industries.
Education
Fertitta attended Texas Tech University and the University of Houston, though he did not complete a degree at either institution. Despite not earning a traditional undergraduate diploma, his business acumen and later philanthropic contributions to higher education earned him substantial recognition from the University of Houston. He served as chairman of the University of Houston System Board of Regents from 2014 to 2025, one of the most influential positions in Texas higher education governance.[4]
In December 2025, the University of Houston granted Fertitta an honorary doctorate, formally recognizing his contributions to the institution and the broader Houston community. The honor came after his resignation from the board of regents earlier that year, which was necessitated by his appointment as U.S. Ambassador to Italy and San Marino.[5]
Career
Landry's, Inc.
Fertitta's career is most closely identified with Landry's, Inc., the Houston-based hospitality and entertainment conglomerate he transformed from a single seafood restaurant into one of the largest privately held companies in the American dining industry. The company traces its origins to the Gulf Coast seafood restaurant tradition, and its history is intertwined with Fertitta's own rise as an entrepreneur.[6]
Under Fertitta's leadership, Landry's grew rapidly through a combination of organic expansion and aggressive acquisitions. The company's portfolio eventually encompassed a vast array of restaurant brands, hotels, casinos, aquariums, and other entertainment properties. Fertitta pursued a strategy of acquiring established dining brands and integrating them into Landry's operational framework, a method that allowed the company to scale quickly while leveraging existing brand recognition.[7]
Among the company's many restaurant concepts are well-known brands spanning seafood, steakhouses, and casual dining.[8] In December 2011, Landry's acquired the Morton's The Steakhouse chain, adding one of America's most recognized fine-dining steakhouse brands to its already extensive portfolio.[9] The company also owns Keens Steakhouse in New York City, a historic establishment that in early 2026 unveiled a flag that had draped over Abraham Lincoln's casket.[10]
In May 2010, Fertitta took Landry's private, buying out public shareholders and consolidating his ownership of the company. The move gave Fertitta complete control over the company's strategic direction and freed it from the quarterly earnings pressures of public markets.[11] The privatization was consistent with Fertitta's preference for hands-on management and long-term strategic planning without external shareholder oversight.
The company's history has been documented in business publications, with industry analysts noting its growth from a regional seafood chain into a national hospitality powerhouse.[12]
Gaming and Casino Interests
Beyond restaurants, Fertitta expanded Landry's into the gaming and casino industry. The company's holdings include the Golden Nugget casino brand, with properties in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Lake Charles, and other locations. The casino operations became a significant revenue driver for Landry's and further diversified the company's hospitality portfolio.
As of April 2025, Fertitta is the lead shareholder in Wynn Resorts, one of the world's premier casino and resort operators. This stake represents a significant expansion of his influence in the global gaming industry beyond his existing Golden Nugget properties.
Houston Rockets
On September 5, 2017, Fertitta reached an agreement to purchase the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association for $2.2 billion. The transaction ranked among the most expensive in the history of American professional sports at the time of the sale. The purchase fulfilled a long-held ambition for Fertitta, who had previously held a minority ownership interest in the Houston Texans of the National Football League before divesting that stake.[13]
Fertitta's ownership of the Rockets has made him one of the most prominent sports franchise owners in the United States. As of early 2026, the Rockets had not won an NBA championship during Fertitta's tenure as owner, a fact noted in media coverage of his diplomatic activities abroad.[14]
Television
Fertitta gained national television exposure as the star of Billion Dollar Buyer, a reality television series that aired on CNBC. The show featured Fertitta visiting small businesses and entrepreneurs, evaluating their products and services, and potentially offering them contracts to supply his extensive network of restaurants and hospitality venues. The program provided a platform for Fertitta to demonstrate his business philosophy and negotiation style to a national audience.[15]
Diplomatic Career
In 2025, Fertitta was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve as the 21st United States Ambassador to Italy and the 6th United States Ambassador to San Marino. He assumed the post on May 6, 2025, succeeding Jack Markell.[5]
Fertitta's appointment represented a transition from private-sector leadership to public diplomacy. His role has involved representing American interests in Italy and participating in high-profile cultural and diplomatic events. In December 2025, he participated in the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch Relay, carrying the Olympic flame alongside Italian football icon Filippo Inzaghi.[16]
In early 2026, Fertitta attended the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy in his capacity as ambassador, celebrating the United States men's hockey team's gold medal victory.[17] He also returned to Houston for a diplomatic reception at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which was described as his first diplomatic foray in his home city since assuming the ambassadorship.[18]
His resignation from the University of Houston System Board of Regents, which he had chaired since 2014, was necessitated by his acceptance of the ambassadorship. In December 2025, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Fertitta's son, Patrick Fertitta, then 31 years old, to succeed him on the board of regents.[19]
Personal Life
Fertitta was previously married to Paige Farwell, whom he married in 1991. The marriage ended in divorce. He is currently married to Lauren Fertitta, with whom he has been involved in various social and philanthropic activities in Houston and abroad.[20]
He has a son, Patrick Fertitta, who was appointed to the University of Houston System Board of Regents in December 2025 at the age of 31.[21]
Fertitta has maintained deep ties to his hometown of Galveston, Texas, and to the greater Houston community throughout his career. He has been involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, serving on its committees.[22][23]
The Fertitta family has been involved in various charitable activities in the Houston area. Fertitta and his family have hosted the "Gathering of Champions" event, a charity function in the Houston community.[24] He has served on the boards of the Houston Police Foundation[25] and the Houston Children's Charity.[26]
The Fertitta family's involvement in the annual Galveston Mardi Gras celebrations, including the San Luis Salute event, has been a longstanding tradition. During the 2026 Mardi Gras season, members of Fertitta's family stepped in to host the event in his absence while he served as ambassador in Italy.[27]
Recognition
Fertitta has received recognition from multiple organizations for his business achievements and community involvement. Forbes has described him as the "World's Richest Restaurateur," placing him on the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans.
In December 2025, the University of Houston conferred an honorary doctorate upon Fertitta, recognizing his long service to the institution as chairman of the board of regents and his broader contributions to the university and the Houston community.[5]
His involvement with law enforcement organizations in Houston has also been recognized. He has served on the board of the Houston Police Foundation and has been acknowledged by the Houston Police Officers' Union for his support of the city's police force.[28][29][30]
His participation in the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch Relay in December 2025, alongside Italian football legend Filippo Inzaghi, represented international recognition of his diplomatic role and cultural significance as the U.S. Ambassador to Italy.[31]
Legacy
Fertitta's career trajectory—from the Gulf Coast restaurant industry to ownership of a major professional sports franchise, a national hospitality empire, and a senior diplomatic appointment—places him among the most prominent business figures in Houston's modern history. His transformation of Landry's, Inc. from a regional seafood restaurant chain into a diversified hospitality conglomerate with hundreds of properties across the United States represents one of the notable consolidation stories in the American restaurant industry.
His long tenure as chairman of the University of Houston System Board of Regents, spanning from 2014 to 2025, coincided with a period of growth and increased national visibility for the university. The appointment of his son Patrick to succeed him on the board in 2025 extended the family's association with the institution into a second generation.[32]
The Fertitta name has become closely associated with the University of Houston campus, reflecting the family's philanthropic investments in the institution. His dual identity as a Houston business leader and an American diplomat has given him an unusual public profile that bridges the private and public sectors.
As the lead shareholder in Wynn Resorts and owner of the Golden Nugget casino brand, Fertitta's influence in the American gaming industry extends beyond his restaurant holdings. Combined with his ownership of the Houston Rockets, his business interests span restaurants, hotels, casinos, and professional sports—a breadth of holdings that few individual American businessmen maintain under private ownership.
