George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961) is an American actor, filmmaker, and businessman whose career spans nearly five decades in the entertainment industry. Rising to national prominence in the mid-1990s through his role as Dr. Doug Ross on the NBC medical drama ER, Clooney transitioned to film and became one of the most recognizable leading men in Hollywood, appearing in both major studio productions and critically acclaimed independent films. He has received two Academy Awards — one for Best Supporting Actor for Syriana (2005) and one for Best Picture as a producer of Argo (2012) — along with a BAFTA Award, four Golden Globe Awards, and nominations for three Primetime Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.[1] Beyond his work on screen, Clooney has directed nine feature films and has been recognized for his political and humanitarian activism, serving as a United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2008.[2] He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.[3] His honors include the Cecil B. DeMille Award (2015), the Honorary César (2017), the AFI Life Achievement Award (2018), and the Kennedy Center Honor (2022).[4]

Early Life

George Timothy Clooney was born on May 6, 1961, in Lexington, Kentucky. His father, Nick Clooney, was a television journalist and anchorman who hosted programs on local and national television. His mother, Nina Bruce Warren, was a beauty queen and city council member. Through his father's side, Clooney is related to the singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, who was his aunt, and the actor Miguel Ferrer, who was his first cousin.[5]

Clooney grew up in a family immersed in broadcasting and entertainment. His father's career in television exposed him to the industry from an early age, and the family moved several times during his childhood, living in various locations in Kentucky and Ohio. He has spoken publicly about growing up in the greater Cincinnati area, a connection he has maintained throughout his career.[6]

Clooney's ancestry has been researched in detail by genealogists. Records indicate Irish, German, and English heritage on various branches of the family tree.[7] Researchers have also identified distant family connections between Clooney and historical figures, including Abraham Lincoln.[8]

Before pursuing acting, Clooney tried out for professional baseball but was not drafted. He began his career in entertainment in the late 1970s, appearing in small television roles starting in 1978.

Career

Television Breakthrough: ER (1994–1999)

After years of minor television appearances and small film roles throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Clooney achieved his breakthrough with the role of Dr. Doug Ross in the NBC medical drama ER, which premiered in 1994. Created by Michael Crichton and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, the series became one of the most-watched programs on American television. Clooney's portrayal of the charismatic and rebellious pediatrician made him a household name and earned him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. He remained a regular cast member on the series through 1999, departing at the height of the show's popularity to focus on his film career.

Early Film Career (1996–2000)

Clooney began transitioning to film while still appearing on ER. His first major film role came in From Dusk till Dawn (1996), directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino, in which he played a bank robber who encounters vampires at a remote strip club. Variety noted the film as a genre-blending action-horror picture that showcased Clooney's screen presence in a feature-length format.[9]

Clooney followed with roles in several high-profile productions. He starred as Batman in Batman & Robin (1997), directed by Joel Schumacher, a film that was a significant commercial and critical disappointment. Clooney has repeatedly acknowledged the film's poor reception over the years, publicly criticizing his own performance and the production.[10]

He recovered with a string of acclaimed performances. In 1998, he starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight, directed by Steven Soderbergh, a crime film adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel that received strong reviews. In 1999, he appeared in Three Kings, a satirical war film directed by David O. Russell set during the aftermath of the Gulf War. In 2000, he starred in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, a comedy loosely based on Homer's Odyssey set in Depression-era Mississippi. These films established Clooney as a leading man capable of balancing commercial appeal with critical credibility.

The Ocean's Franchise and Major Stardom (2001–2007)

In 2001, Clooney reunited with Steven Soderbergh for Ocean's Eleven, a heist film and remake of the 1960 Rat Pack vehicle. The film co-starred Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, and Julia Roberts, and was a major box office success. Two sequels followed: Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007), both directed by Soderbergh. The trilogy cemented Clooney's status as one of the most bankable and recognizable film stars of his generation.

During this same period, Clooney took on more dramatic and politically charged roles. In 2005, he appeared in Syriana, directed by Stephen Gaghan, in which he played a CIA operative navigating the complexities of Middle Eastern geopolitics. For his performance, Clooney gained weight and altered his physical appearance, and he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The same year, he co-wrote and directed Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), a historical drama about the conflict between television journalist Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Clooney.

Directing Career

Clooney made his directorial debut with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), a biographical film about television host Chuck Barris based on Barris's claim that he was also a CIA assassin. The film, written by Charlie Kaufman, received mixed-to-positive reviews and demonstrated Clooney's ambition to work behind the camera.

Following the critical success of Good Night, and Good Luck in 2005, Clooney continued to direct films that often engaged with political and historical subjects. His directing credits include Leatherheads (2008), a period sports comedy; The Ides of March (2011), a political thriller starring Ryan Gosling; The Monuments Men (2014), a World War II drama about the rescue of art stolen by the Nazis; Suburbicon (2017), a crime comedy; The Midnight Sky (2020), a science fiction drama; and The Tender Bar (2021), a coming-of-age film starring Ben Affleck. In total, Clooney has directed nine feature films.

Continued Acting Work (2007–2020s)

Following his Oscar win for Syriana, Clooney continued to take on leading roles in critically acclaimed films. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Michael Clayton (2007), a legal thriller directed by Tony Gilroy; Up in the Air (2009), directed by Jason Reitman; and The Descendants (2011), directed by Alexander Payne.

Other notable acting roles during this period include Burn After Reading (2008), a dark comedy directed by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen; the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), directed by Wes Anderson, in which Clooney provided the voice of the titular character; The American (2010); Gravity (2013), directed by Alfonso Cuarón, in which he co-starred alongside Sandra Bullock; Hail, Caesar! (2016), another Coen brothers production; Ticket to Paradise (2022), co-starring Julia Roberts; and The Boys in the Boat (2023), which he also directed.

In 2025, Clooney starred in Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach. He also made his Broadway debut in 2025, portraying Edward R. Murrow in a stage adaptation of his 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck. The performance earned him a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, adding to his extensive list of honors across multiple entertainment disciplines.

In early 2026, Clooney was noted among the notable omissions from the Academy Award nominations for the upcoming ceremony, as reported by CBS News.[11]

Producing: Argo and Other Projects

In addition to his work as an actor and director, Clooney has served as a producer on numerous projects. His most significant producing credit came with Argo (2012), a political thriller directed by Ben Affleck about the rescue of American hostages during the Iran hostage crisis. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, with Clooney among the credited producers. Upon receiving the award, Clooney became one of a small group of individuals to have won Academy Awards in both acting and producing categories.[12]

Business Ventures

Outside of entertainment, Clooney has pursued notable business ventures. He co-founded the tequila brand Casamigos along with Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman. The brand was sold in 2017 in a deal reportedly valued at up to $1 billion, representing one of the largest celebrity alcohol brand acquisitions.

In March 2026, Clooney, Gerber, and Meldman launched Crazy Mountain, a non-alcoholic beer brand. The venture marked the trio's return to the beverage industry following the Casamigos sale. The beer was developed with industry veteran Steve Fechheimer and was made available for purchase across the United States.[13][14][15]

Personal Life

Clooney was previously married to actress Talia Balsam; the couple married in 1989 and divorced in 1993. On September 27, 2014, he married Amal Alamuddin, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer specializing in international law. The couple has two children together.

Clooney has been a supporter of the Democratic Party and has participated in political fundraising and advocacy efforts.[16] He has used his public platform to draw attention to a range of humanitarian causes, including the conflict in Darfur and human rights issues in various countries. In 2019, he called for a boycott of hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei in response to the country's introduction of laws prescribing severe punishments, including death by stoning, for homosexuality and adultery.[17][18]

In January 2026, Clooney made public comments in response to remarks by Quentin Tarantino that were perceived as insulting to several actors, including Paul Dano, Owen Wilson, and Matthew Lillard. Clooney stated he would be "honored" to work with each of them and said, "We are living in a time of cruelty."[19]

Political and Humanitarian Activism

Clooney has been involved in political and humanitarian causes throughout his career. He has served as one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace since January 2008, a role designated for individuals who use their public visibility to help focus attention on UN efforts.[20][21]

He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a nonpartisan foreign policy think tank based in the United States.[22]

Clooney has been active in domestic political advocacy as well. In 2020, he was profiled by Vanity Fair in connection with his efforts to support political causes and candidates in traditionally Republican-leaning states.[23] He has participated in numerous fundraisers and public events in support of Democratic Party candidates and progressive causes.

CNN named Clooney one of the "Most Intriguing People" in 2010, citing both his entertainment career and his humanitarian efforts.[24]

Recognition

Clooney has received a broad array of awards and honors across his career. His two Academy Awards — Best Supporting Actor for Syriana (2006 ceremony) and Best Picture for Argo (2013 ceremony) — place him among a select group of individuals recognized by the Academy in both performing and producing capacities.[25] He has additionally received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for Michael Clayton (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and The Descendants (2011), as well as nominations for his directing and screenwriting work on Good Night, and Good Luck (2005).

He has won four Golden Globe Awards and one BAFTA Award over the course of his career, and has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work on ER. His 2025 Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play.

Among his lifetime achievement recognitions, Clooney received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 2015, the Honorary César from the French Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques in 2017, the AFI Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 2018, and the Kennedy Center Honor in 2022.[26]

Clooney was included on Time magazine's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world every year from 2006 to 2009, a distinction reflecting both his entertainment career and his public advocacy work.

Legacy

George Clooney's career has spanned from television to film acting, directing, producing, and Broadway, making him one of the most versatile figures in American entertainment in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His transition from television stardom on ER to a sustained film career — encompassing commercial blockbusters, independent films, and directorial projects — has served as a model for actors seeking creative control and range beyond their initial medium.

As a filmmaker, Clooney has demonstrated a recurring interest in political and historical subjects. Films such as Good Night, and Good Luck, The Ides of March, and The Monuments Men reflect an engagement with questions of power, media responsibility, and civic duty that extends beyond his on-screen work and into his public activism.

His business acumen, demonstrated through the founding and sale of Casamigos and the subsequent launch of the Crazy Mountain non-alcoholic beer brand, has also marked him as a notable figure in the celebrity entrepreneurship space.

Clooney's humanitarian work — including his role as a UN Messenger of Peace, his advocacy regarding the conflict in Darfur, and his various political interventions — has earned him recognition beyond the entertainment industry and placed him among the most publicly engaged figures of his generation in Hollywood.
