Faye Denise Resnick (née Hutchison; born July 3, 1957) is an American television personality, author, and interior designer who first entered public consciousness under extraordinary circumstances — as the close friend of Nicole Brown Simpson during the 1994–1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial. Resnick's publication of a tell-all memoir about her friendship with Brown Simpson, released while jury selection for the trial was still underway, made her one of the most polarizing figures surrounding the case. Her book, Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted, became a bestseller but also drew intense criticism from both the prosecution and defense teams, as well as from the presiding judge. In the decades following the trial, Resnick reinvented herself as an interior designer and became a recurring presence on the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, where she appeared as a close friend of cast member Kyle Richards. Resnick's life and role in the Simpson saga were dramatized in the 2016 FX television series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, in which actress Connie Britton portrayed her. Her trajectory — from a private citizen thrust into the center of one of America's most watched criminal trials to a reality television fixture — has made her a subject of ongoing public interest and media commentary.
Early Life
Faye Denise Hutchison was born on July 3, 1957, in Brentwood, California.[1] Details about her parents and upbringing are limited in publicly available sources. Records indicate she was living in the area around the San Francisco Bay Area during the mid-1970s; a newspaper archive from May 1975 references her in the Daily Review.[2]
Resnick married Rick Barnett in 1978, though the marriage was brief, ending in divorce in 1979. She subsequently married Fadi Halabi in 1984, a marriage that also ended in divorce in 1986. Her third marriage, to Paul Resnick in 1987, lasted until 1991. It was through this marriage that she adopted the surname by which she became publicly known.[3]
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Resnick moved in the social circles of affluent Brentwood and the broader West Side of Los Angeles. It was during this period that she developed a close friendship with Nicole Brown Simpson, the ex-wife of former professional football player and actor O.J. Simpson. This friendship would later place Resnick at the center of one of the most publicized criminal cases in American history.
Career
The O.J. Simpson Murder Trial and Book Publication
On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were found murdered outside Brown Simpson's condominium in Brentwood, Los Angeles. O.J. Simpson was subsequently charged with their murders. Resnick, as one of Nicole Brown Simpson's closest friends, found herself drawn into the media storm that engulfed the case.
In the weeks following the murders, Resnick entered a rehabilitation facility for substance abuse issues, a fact that became publicly known during the trial proceedings.[4] Her substance abuse struggles became a significant point of contention during the trial, with defense attorney Johnnie Cochran suggesting that the murders might have been connected to drug dealers rather than to O.J. Simpson, a theory that came to be known informally as the "drug link" defense.[5]
In October 1994, while jury selection for the Simpson trial was ongoing, Resnick published Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted, co-authored with journalist Mike Walker of the National Enquirer.[6] The book detailed Resnick's friendship with Nicole Brown Simpson and included intimate accounts of Brown Simpson's life, her relationship with O.J. Simpson, and allegations of domestic abuse. The publication of the book proved highly controversial. Judge Lance Ito, who presided over the Simpson trial, expressed concern that the book could taint the jury pool. The timing of its release — during jury selection — led to accusations that Resnick was exploiting the tragedy for personal profit.[7]
The book became an immediate bestseller despite — or perhaps because of — the controversy. Public opinion on Resnick was sharply divided. Some viewed her as a grieving friend who was attempting to tell the truth about Nicole Brown Simpson's abusive marriage, while others characterized her as an opportunist.[8] A USA Today report noted the intense public interest in Resnick's account and the debate it generated.[9]
Resnick later published a second book, Shattered: In the Eye of the Storm, which continued to address the Simpson case and its aftermath on her personal life.[10]
The defense team's strategy of casting suspicion toward Resnick's social world and alleged drug connections created lasting public associations between Resnick and the more sensational aspects of the trial. During the proceedings, Cochran suggested to the jury that the murders could have been committed by drug dealers connected to Resnick, a claim for which no substantial evidence was presented at trial but which received significant media attention.[11]
Vanity Fair and Media Coverage
The enduring cultural significance of Resnick's role in the Simpson trial was revisited extensively in 2016, when FX aired the limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Actress Connie Britton portrayed Resnick in the series, bringing renewed attention to her story. A Vanity Fair article published in February 2016 examined Resnick's book and its impact on the trial, re-evaluating the content of her memoir in light of the dramatization.[12] A People magazine feature from the same period provided background on Resnick's relationship with Brown Simpson, contextualizing her role for audiences encountering the story for the first time through the FX series.[13]
Interior Design Career
Following the Simpson trial and the media attention it generated, Resnick pursued a career in interior design. She established herself as a designer serving high-end residential clients in the Los Angeles area, working through her own practice.[14] Her design work became another avenue through which she maintained a public profile in the years between the trial and her later television appearances.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills
Resnick gained a new generation of public visibility through her recurring appearances on the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which premiered in 2010. She appeared on the show primarily as a close friend of main cast member Kyle Richards, rather than as a full-time cast member herself. Despite her "friend of" status, Resnick became a notable presence on the series, frequently involved in dramatic storylines and confrontations with other cast members.
Her role on the show was characterized by commentators as that of a loyal confidante to Richards — a dynamic that drew comparisons to her earlier public role as the close friend of Nicole Brown Simpson. A 2021 commentary published by Yahoo Entertainment argued that Resnick had helped define the archetype of the "best friend" role on reality television, noting that her function as Richards's ally across multiple seasons made her one of the most recognizable recurring figures in the Real Housewives franchise.[15]
Resnick's presence on the show also brought renewed attention to her involvement in the Simpson case. In one notable episode, cast member Kathryn Edwards, whose ex-husband had been rumored to have had a relationship with Nicole Brown Simpson, confronted Resnick about allegations made in her book. The confrontation highlighted how the events of the mid-1990s continued to reverberate in Resnick's public life decades later.[16]
A BuzzFeed profile examined Resnick's complicated role on the show, noting the tension between her status as a reality television personality and her association with one of the most significant criminal cases of the 20th century.[17]
In 2024, Bravo published a profile examining Resnick's life following her time on the show, covering her family and personal developments.[18]
By 2025, Resnick's involvement with the Real Housewives franchise continued. In July 2025, rumors circulated online that Resnick had been involved in a physical altercation with actress Jennifer Tilly during the filming of the show's fifteenth season. Both Resnick and Tilly publicly denied the reports. Tilly dismissed the rumors as "silly," stating through social media, "I usually don't respond to rumors," and confirming there was no animosity between the two.[19][20][21]
Playboy Appearance
Resnick posed for Playboy magazine, which generated additional media coverage and contributed to her public profile during the mid-1990s, a period in which her name was already widely known due to the Simpson trial.[22]
Personal Life
Resnick has been married three times. Her first marriage, to Rick Barnett in 1978, ended in divorce in 1979. She married Fadi Halabi in 1984, and the couple divorced in 1986. Her third marriage, to Paul Resnick in 1987, ended in divorce in 1991.[18]
Resnick has spoken publicly about her struggles with substance abuse, which became a prominent topic during the Simpson trial. She entered a rehabilitation facility in the period immediately before the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in June 1994, and her drug use was raised by the defense during trial proceedings.[23]
Her friendship with Kyle Richards has been one of her most publicly visible personal relationships in recent years. The two have been photographed together at various social events, and Richards's family attended Resnick's wedding when she remarried.[24]
Resnick maintains an official website through which she promotes her interior design business.[25]
Legacy
Faye Resnick's public legacy is inextricably linked to the O.J. Simpson murder trial and its cultural aftermath. Her decision to publish Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted during the trial made her one of the most controversial peripheral figures in the case. The book's defenders have argued that it brought public attention to the domestic abuse Nicole Brown Simpson allegedly suffered, providing a personal account that humanized the victim at a time when much of the media coverage focused on the defendant and legal proceedings. Critics contended that the book exploited a friend's death for commercial gain and potentially compromised the trial itself.[26]
A 2021 Yahoo Entertainment commentary argued that Resnick was "overdue an apology," contending that much of the hostility directed toward her during the 1990s was disproportionate and that her account of Brown Simpson's life contained important truths that the public had been slow to acknowledge.[27]
The dramatization of the Simpson trial in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story in 2016 introduced Resnick's story to a new audience. Connie Britton's portrayal of Resnick brought renewed scrutiny to her role in the events, and media retrospectives re-examined the contents of her book in light of subsequent cultural conversations about domestic violence.[28][29]
Within the Real Housewives franchise, Resnick's role has been credited with establishing a template for the recurring "friend of" cast member — a participant who appears regularly without holding a full-time position on the show. Her sustained presence across multiple seasons of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills demonstrated that such figures could become central to the show's narrative dynamics.[30]
