Jennifer Tilly (born Jennifer Ellen Chan; September 16, 1958) is an American actress and professional poker player whose career has spanned more than four decades across film, television, theater, and competitive poker. Recognized for her distinctive breathy voice and sharp comedic timing, Tilly earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Olive Neal in Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway (1994) and has since built one of the most varied résumés in American entertainment. She gained cult status through her portrayal of Tiffany Valentine in the Child's Play horror franchise beginning with Bride of Chucky (1998), a role she has reprised across multiple sequels and the television series Chucky (2021–2024). Since 1999, she has voiced the recurring character Bonnie Swanson on the animated sitcom Family Guy. Beyond acting, Tilly became the first celebrity to win a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2005, and her live tournament winnings have exceeded $1 million. She is the sister of actress Meg Tilly.[1][2]
Early Life
Jennifer Ellen Chan was born on September 16, 1958, in Los Angeles, California.[1] Her father was of Chinese descent, and her mother was of Finnish and Irish heritage, giving Tilly a mixed ethnic background.[3] Her younger sister, Meg Tilly, also became an actress, earning a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Agnes of God (1985).[3]
Tilly grew up in a large family and eventually adopted her stepfather's surname. She spent part of her childhood in Canada, where her family relocated during her youth.[3] Her early interest in performing arts became evident during her adolescence, and she pursued acting from a young age, eventually training formally in theater.
Education
Tilly attended Stephens College, a women's college in Columbia, Missouri, where she studied theater and the performing arts.[1] The college has a long history of producing notable graduates in the entertainment industry. Tilly's formal training at Stephens provided her with a foundation in stage performance that would inform her work across film, television, and the theater throughout her career.
Career
Early Career and Breakthrough (1983–1993)
Tilly began her professional acting career in 1983, taking on a succession of small parts in film and on television throughout the mid-to-late 1980s.[1] During this period, she steadily built her presence in Hollywood through supporting roles and guest appearances. One of her earliest notable film credits came with The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), in which she appeared alongside Jeff Bridges, Beau Bridges, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
In 1993, Tilly appeared in the comedy Made in America, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson. That same year, she earned recognition for her stage work in the off-Broadway play One Shoe Off, for which she received a Theatre World Award, an honor given annually to outstanding Broadway and off-Broadway debut performances.[4]
Also in 1993, Tilly married television producer Sam Simon, co-creator of the animated series The Simpsons. The marriage was short-lived, and the couple divorced. As part of the divorce settlement, Tilly reportedly received backend royalties from The Simpsons, which have continued to provide substantial income over the ensuing decades.[5] According to Celebrity Net Worth, the settlement yields an estimated $6–10 million per year in royalties from the show's syndication and licensing deals, making it one of the most financially consequential divorce settlements in entertainment history.[5]
Film Stardom: Bullets Over Broadway and Bound (1994–1997)
Tilly's breakthrough in feature films came in 1994 with her performance as Olive Neal in Woody Allen's ensemble comedy Bullets Over Broadway. The film, set in 1920s New York, featured Tilly as the ditzy, talentless girlfriend of a mobster who finances a Broadway play on the condition that she receive a starring role. Tilly's performance earned widespread critical praise and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, elevating her profile in the industry.[2][1]
In 1996, Tilly starred as Violet in Bound, a neo-noir crime thriller directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski (then credited as the Wachowski Brothers). In the film, Tilly played a lesbian femme fatale opposite Gina Gershon, in what became one of her most acclaimed roles. Bound earned critical recognition and became a cult favorite, particularly within the LGBTQ community, and Tilly received a GLAAD Award for her performance.[2]
Tilly continued her prolific output in 1997 with a supporting role in the hit comedy Liar Liar, starring Jim Carrey. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $300 million worldwide, and further broadened Tilly's visibility with mainstream audiences.
The Child's Play Franchise and Cult Status (1998–2024)
In 1998, Tilly took on the role that would become her most enduring in popular culture: Tiffany Valentine in Bride of Chucky, the fourth installment in the Child's Play horror film series. In the film, Tiffany is the former girlfriend of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, whose soul inhabits the Chucky doll. After being killed and resurrected in a doll herself, Tiffany becomes Chucky's murderous bride. The role showcased Tilly's ability to blend dark comedy with horror, and the film was a commercial success, earning a Saturn Award nomination.[1]
Tilly reprised the role of Tiffany in Seed of Chucky (2004), in which she also played a fictionalized version of herself, creating a meta-narrative layer in the franchise. She continued to appear in subsequent installments, including Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017), both direct-to-video releases that maintained a devoted fan following.
The character of Tiffany Valentine proved to be among the most recognizable female villains in horror cinema, and Tilly's commitment to the franchise over more than two decades solidified her status as a scream queen and pop culture icon. When the Child's Play franchise expanded to television with the Syfy/USA series Chucky (2021–2024), Tilly was a central cast member, reprising both Tiffany Valentine and the fictionalized version of herself across multiple seasons of the show.[2]
Voice Acting (1998–present)
Tilly has maintained a parallel career in voice acting, leveraging her distinctive vocal quality. In 1998, she appeared in Music from Another Room, and in 1999 she voiced a character in the animated film Stuart Little. She joined the cast of the Fox animated sitcom Family Guy in 1999 as the voice of Bonnie Swanson, the long-suffering wife of paraplegic police officer Joe Swanson. The role has continued for over two decades, making it one of the longest-running voice performances in American animated television.[1]
Tilly also lent her voice to several other animated projects. She voiced a character in Pixar's Monsters, Inc. (2001) and appeared in Disney's animated feature Home on the Range (2004). Her work in The Haunted Mansion (2003) further demonstrated her versatility in both live-action and animated formats.
Theater Work
In addition to her screen work, Tilly has maintained a presence on the stage throughout her career. Following her Theatre World Award–winning performance in One Shoe Off (1993), she appeared in the Broadway revival of The Women in 2001 and the Broadway production of Don't Dress for Dinner in 2012.[4]
In 2026, Tilly returned to off-Broadway in a revival of The Adding Machine with The New Group, directed by Scott Elliott. In interviews promoting the production, Tilly discussed the play's themes of loneliness, dark humor, and humanity, and described the appeal of returning to live theater after years focused primarily on film and television work.[6]
Other Film and Television Work
Throughout her career, Tilly has accumulated an extensive list of film credits across a range of genres. In addition to the titles already noted, she appeared in Peter Bogdanovich's The Cat's Meow (2001), a dramatization of events aboard William Randolph Hearst's yacht in 1924, and in Terry Gilliam's Tideland (2005), a dark fantasy drama.
In the realm of reality television, Tilly joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, initially appearing as a guest in several episodes before being upgraded to a recurring role as a "friend of" the housewives. By Season 15 (airing in 2025–2026), she had become a prominent presence on the show, participating in the social dynamics and confessional segments that characterize the franchise.[7][8] In March 2026, Tilly shared updates regarding her friendships with fellow cast members Sutton Stracke and Garcelle Beauvais, and offered commentary on the dynamics between other cast members including Kyle Richards and Dorit Kemsley.[9][10][11]
Professional Poker Career
Tilly developed an interest in competitive poker in the early 2000s and began participating in professional tournaments. In 2005, she became the first celebrity to win a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet, one of the most prestigious accomplishments in competitive poker. She won the event at the WSOP Ladies' No-Limit Texas Hold'em tournament, defeating a field of professional and amateur players.[12]
That same year, Tilly won the third World Poker Tour Ladies Invitational Tournament, further establishing her credentials as a competitive poker player. Her poker career was covered extensively in publications such as Bluff Magazine, where her transition between the entertainment and poker worlds attracted significant media attention.[13]
Tilly appeared on the Game Show Network's Poker Royale and participated in numerous other televised poker events, bringing mainstream visibility to the sport.[14] In 2014, she was nominated for PokerListings' Spirit of Poker Living Legend Award. As of 2019, her live tournament winnings exceeded $1 million, placing her among the most successful celebrity poker players in the world.[15]
Her long-term romantic partner, Phil Laak, is himself a professional poker player, and the couple have been a notable presence at poker events together since 2004.[7]
Personal Life
Tilly was married to television producer Sam Simon, known as the co-creator of The Simpsons, in 1993. The marriage ended in divorce, and as part of the settlement, Tilly received a share of backend royalties from The Simpsons, which has reportedly generated millions of dollars annually in ongoing income.[5] Simon died in 2015.
Since 2004, Tilly has been in a relationship with professional poker player Phil Laak, sometimes known by his poker nickname "The Unabomber." The couple have been prominent figures in the poker community together and have appeared at numerous tournaments and televised poker events as a pair.[7][13]
Tilly is the older sister of actress Meg Tilly, who is known for her roles in Agnes of God (1985) and The Big Chill (1983). The sisters share a mixed heritage of Chinese, Finnish, and Irish ancestry.[3] Meg Tilly later transitioned from acting to a career as a novelist.
Tilly is known as a collector of fine jewelry, a hobby she has discussed publicly during her appearances on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. In one segment, she described entering bidding wars at auction for vintage pieces with historical provenance.[16]
Recognition
Tilly's most prominent industry recognition came with her Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Bullets Over Broadway (1994), which placed her among the most acclaimed performers of that year.[2] Although she did not win, the nomination significantly elevated her standing in the film industry and led to a wider range of roles.
She received a Saturn Award, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, for her work in the horror genre, and a GLAAD Award for her performance in Bound (1996), recognizing her contribution to LGBTQ representation in film.[2] She also received two MTV Movie Award nominations over the course of her career.
In theater, Tilly was honored with a Theatre World Award in 1993 for her off-Broadway debut in One Shoe Off, which recognized her as one of the outstanding new performers of that season.[4]
In the poker world, Tilly's 2005 WSOP bracelet win made her the first celebrity to achieve that distinction, a milestone that received significant media coverage. Her nomination for the PokerListings' Spirit of Poker Living Legend Award in 2014 further underscored her impact on the sport.[12][15]
Legacy
Jennifer Tilly has built a career notable for its range and longevity, encompassing critically acclaimed dramatic performances, popular comedies, voice acting, horror films, stage work, reality television, and professional poker. Her Academy Award–nominated performance in Bullets Over Broadway established her as a serious dramatic actress, while her work in Bound contributed to a landmark moment in LGBTQ representation in mainstream cinema during the 1990s.
Her portrayal of Tiffany Valentine in the Child's Play franchise, sustained across more than 25 years and multiple media formats, has made the character one of the most recognizable female villains in horror film history. Tilly's willingness to return to the role repeatedly, and to engage with the franchise's evolving tone—from straightforward horror to self-referential comedy—has earned her a devoted following among horror fans and cemented her status as a scream queen.[2]
In the poker world, Tilly's success at the highest levels of competition challenged perceptions about celebrity participation in professional sports. Her WSOP bracelet win in 2005 demonstrated that her involvement in poker was substantive rather than merely promotional, and her cumulative tournament earnings exceeding $1 million further validated her standing as a serious competitor.[12][15]
Her long-running voice role as Bonnie Swanson on Family Guy, spanning more than two decades, represents one of the most sustained voice performances in American animated television. Combined with her film, stage, poker, and reality television careers, Tilly's body of work reflects an unusually diverse range of accomplishments within American entertainment.
