Daniel Portela is an American software engineer and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of RetroFix, an artificial intelligence-powered workflow automation platform that participated in Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch.[1]

Early life and education

Portela attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). While an undergraduate at MIT, he developed an app that allowed the university's mascot, Tim the Beaver, to be experienced in virtual reality. The project was featured by MIT News in May 2023.

Career

Prior to founding RetroFix, Portela served as a founding engineer at Maura, a technology company.

In 2024, Portela co-founded RetroFix alongside Isaac Toscano. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California. RetroFix is a software as a service (SaaS) platform that enables users to build and manage automated workflows using natural language descriptions. Rather than requiring users to manually configure automation sequences, the platform employs an AI agent that interprets plain English instructions and constructs workflows end-to-end. The system can connect with over 2,800 third-party applications and offers pre-built actions for common tasks. When a pre-built integration is not available, the AI agent can write custom code to access the full APIs of connected applications.[2]

RetroFix's product suite includes a workflow builder, browser agents, knowledge bases and AI chatbots, coding agents, and specialized agent tools. The platform is marketed toward freelancers, AI agencies, and other professionals seeking to automate repetitive tasks without extensive technical configuration. Use cases include meeting briefing generation, follow-up email drafting from meeting transcripts, and various productivity, marketing, sales, and product workflows.

The company was accepted into Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch and operates in the artificial intelligence, SaaS, and workflow automation sectors. As of its early access period, RetroFix's clients include Swyft, AB Energy, and Earthlite Lighting, among others.

Portela is based in the New York City area.
