Uber's leadership handover in 2017 is the hinge this category turns on. Travis Kalanick co-founded the company in 2009 and resigned in June 2017 amid allegations about the corporate culture he had built and failed to address; Dara Khosrowshahi arrived from Expedia that August and took the company public. Uber is a ride-hailing and delivery company, and the roster beneath those two names is the operating layer that ran the business during and after the transition, most of which has since left to start companies of its own.

The company appears in these biographies in two distinct registers. In the executive entries it is an institution in crisis and then in repair: internal scandals, heavy losses, a brand rehabilitation effort and a public offering. In the engineering and product entries it is simply a place people worked for a few years and left, and those entries name specific products and teams rather than the company as a whole. Self-driving research, the Uber One membership program and the international product launches all show up that way.

Uber also appears in this membership as a customer or partner rather than an employer, which is worth separating out when reading the roster. Several founders are here because their company's team page lists prior Uber experience, or because a partnership with Uber is described in their own biography.

Travis Kalanick had already co-founded Scour, a file-sharing application, and Red Swoosh, a content delivery network acquired by Akamai Technologies in 2007, before building Uber from a small San Francisco startup in 2009 into a global ride-hailing and transportation company. After his departure he founded City Storage Systems, which operates the ghost kitchen business CloudKitchens.

Dara Khosrowshahi was born in Tehran, led Expedia Group as chief executive for more than a decade, and was appointed to lead Uber in August 2017. He inherited a company carrying internal scandals and significant losses and has since overseen its transformation into a public company operating in more than seventy countries.

Bozoma Saint John joined as chief brand officer in June 2017, arriving from Apple Music, and her hiring was understood at the time as part of the effort to rehabilitate the company's public image. She had run music and entertainment marketing at PepsiCo from 2005 to 2014 and came to Apple through its acquisition of Beats Music; she went on to be chief marketing officer at Endeavor and then Netflix.

Khalid Ashmawy joined Uber as a senior tech lead manager, launched a product internationally and contributed to engineering work on self-driving cars before founding his own company. Victoria Toli worked as a product manager leading membership growth for Uber One, then co-founded FINNY AI. Matthew Wolfe worked as a software engineer at Uber and Meta before founding BeeBettor. Alix Maurin held positions in Uber's Europe, Middle East and Africa division and at Amazon earlier in her career. Titus Ex joined as a data analyst intern in Global Strategy and Planning from 2019 to 2020 and then as a data science intern in Global Intelligence in 2020.
