Category:Former Carlyle Group Employees

The neutral encyclopedia of notable people

The Carlyle Group was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1987, and its location is the whole point of this category. Where most private equity rosters read as a list of bankers, this one reads as a two-way door between the federal government and the investment business. A former Secretary of Defense chaired it. A co-chief executive left it to become a governor. Its co-founder came out of the Carter White House. The membership is small, but almost every entry in it crosses between public office and the firm in one direction or the other.

The founders and the Washington connection

David Rubenstein was a domestic policy adviser in the Carter administration before co-founding the firm in 1987, and the connections and judgment he took from that work fed directly into its growth. He has served as co-chairman, chairs boards of trustees at Duke University, the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Chicago, and in 2024 became the principal owner of the Baltimore Orioles.

William Conway Jr. joined Rubenstein and Daniel D'Aniello in 1987 to establish the firm, and together they built it from a small Washington operation into a global manager across aerospace, defense, telecommunications, real estate and healthcare.

The chairmen

Frank Carlucci arrived in January 1989, directly from government. He had served under every president from Kennedy to Reagan and finished as Secretary of Defense, and he then spent more than a decade as chairman of Carlyle, a period in which the firm used its government and defense relationships to build a defense-heavy portfolio. Lou Gerstner followed a different route to the same chair, serving from 2003 to 2008 after running RJR Nabisco and then IBM.

The chief executive succession

Glenn Youngkin joined after Harvard Business School and spent roughly twenty-five years at the firm, becoming co-chief executive in 2018, before leaving for Virginia politics and the governorship in 2022. Kewsong Lee came from more than two decades at Warburg Pincus, joined Carlyle in 2013, served as co-chief executive alongside Youngkin from 2018 to 2020 and as sole chief executive from 2020 until his departure in 2022, overseeing the firm's conversion from a partnership to a corporation. Harvey Schwartz was named chief executive in early 2023 after more than two decades at Goldman Sachs, where he had been chief financial officer and then president and co-chief operating officer, and has moved the firm toward credit and insurance-linked assets.

Adena Friedman served as a managing director and chief financial officer at Carlyle from 2011 to 2014, then returned to Nasdaq and became its chief executive in January 2017. Also linked to the firm are Aditya Puri of HDFC Bank, and Dakotah Rice and Tushar Nair, co-founders of an AI-native insurance brokerage.
