Alphabet Inc. is the holding company created in August 2015, when Google reorganized itself so that the search business became one subsidiary among several rather than the parent of everything else. This category is organized around that restructuring, because the restructuring is what separates an Alphabet role from a Google one. The membership is small and senior: the people who moved up to the holding company, the people who took over the operating businesses underneath it, the outside directors, and the researchers whose work started inside an Alphabet subsidiary and left to compete with it.
The 2015 restructuring
Larry Page announced the creation of Alphabet on 10 August 2015 and became its chief executive, a role he held until December 2019, and he remains a board member and controlling shareholder. Sergey Brin served as president of the holding company until the same date, remains a board member, and came out of retirement in December 2023 to work on artificial intelligence research inside the company. Sundar Pichai took operational control of Google in the same reorganization and added the Alphabet chief executive role in December 2019, holding both since.
Eric Schmidt became executive chairman of Alphabet at the reorganization, having run Google from 2001 to 2011, then served as a technical advisor from 2017 to 2020, which closed out roughly two decades of formal association with the company.
YouTube and the operating layer
The largest subsidiary in the group is represented by its own succession. Susan Wojcicki was among Google's earliest employees, rented her Menlo Park garage to its founders, and ran YouTube from 2014 to 2023 through the period in which it became a central component of Alphabet's business. Neal Mohan was named her successor in February 2023, an appointment Wojcicki announced herself and Pichai confirmed. Gideon Yu served as chief financial officer of YouTube before the same title at Facebook.
The board contributes two members from outside technology entirely. Alan Mulally retired as chief executive of Ford on 1 July 2014 and joined the Google board two weeks later, on 15 July. Frances Arnold, a Nobel laureate in chemistry, joined the Alphabet board in 2019.
The research diaspora
The DeepMind acquisition put a London research laboratory inside the group, and the people who left it are the reason this category is not simply a list of Google executives. Mustafa Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, which the acquisition brought under Google and later Alphabet, and afterward went on to head Microsoft AI. Arthur Mensch joined DeepMind as a researcher after his doctorate and later co-founded Mistral AI in Paris, alongside Timothée Lacroix. David Cheriton came at the company from the other end, as an early backer whose stake appreciated through the 2004 initial public offering and the later reorganization.
