Carrie Genzel (born 18 September 1971) is a Canadian actress and film producer with a career spanning over three decades in television, film, and advocacy work. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she first gained prominence on American daytime television as Skye Chandler on the ABC soap opera All My Children. Since the 1990s, she's appeared across television and film, from guest roles on Supernatural and Days of Our Lives to horror and science fiction projects. Beyond acting, she's involved in humanitarian and environmental advocacy. Her range as a performer has let her move between daytime drama, prime-time television, and independent film, making her recognizable across multiple entertainment platforms.
Early Life
Carrie Genzel was born on 18 September 1971 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[1] She grew up in the Vancouver area, which by the late 20th century had become a significant hub for North American film and television production. Public sources don't have much on her parents, siblings, or childhood. What we do know is that she developed an interest in performing arts early on and started pursuing acting in the early 1990s.[2]
Vancouver's film industry, often called "Hollywood North," created a natural environment for aspiring actors during her formative years. The city's proximity to Los Angeles and the constant flow of American productions filming in British Columbia offered early opportunities for Canadian performers seeking work in both Canadian and American entertainment.
Career
Daytime Television and All My Children
In the early 1990s, she began her career locally in Vancouver, then shifted to roles in American television. Her biggest early role came as Skye Chandler on the long-running ABC daytime drama All My Children. Skye Chandler was a significant character in the soap opera, and Genzel's performance brought her recognition among daytime audiences.[2][3]
Created by Agnes Nixon, All My Children was one of the most popular and enduring soap operas in American television history. It aired on ABC from 1970 to 2011, then briefly revived online. Genzel joined during a period when the show commanded a large, devoted audience. Skye Chandler was the daughter of Adam Chandler, one of the soap's central figures, and Genzel's performance drove several key storylines during her time on the series.[3]
When Agnes Nixon died in September 2016, Genzel was among the actors and industry figures who reflected on her legacy and impact on daytime television.[4] Nixon had been a pioneer in the soap opera genre, and Genzel's work in All My Children connected her to this broader legacy of American daytime drama.
Even years after leaving the show, Skye Chandler remained closely tied to Genzel in soap opera fan communities. She was frequently referenced in soap opera media as a notable alumna of the series.[5]
Prime-Time Television
Genzel expanded her work into prime-time and genre television after daytime. She landed roles across various genres, showing real range as a performer.
One notable appearance came on the science fiction series Flash Gordon, which ran on the Syfy channel. The New York Daily News reviewed the show and its cast during its run.[6]
In 2015, she appeared in an episode of the CW series Supernatural, one of television's longest-running genre shows. The casting caught attention from both Supernatural fans and soap opera media outlets, which noted that the former All My Children star was appearing in the hit series.[7] The show's early episodes, dealing with supernatural themes, had built a dedicated fanbase, placing Genzel within one of television's most active fan communities.[8]
She showed up on the BET series Sistas as well, marking her continued presence across multiple networks and genres. Coverage of her guest role highlighted her soap opera background and her transition to other television forms.[9]
Daytime work continued too. Genzel appeared on Days of Our Lives, another iconic American soap opera, further cementing her association with the genre that launched her career.[10]
Film Career
Beyond television, Genzel has stayed active in film. She's appeared in various projects, particularly in horror and science fiction.
In 2015, she appeared in Dead Rising: Watchtower, based on the popular Dead Rising video game franchise. The film featured zombie apocalypse themes from the game series and got coverage in entertainment and faith-based media when its trailer released.[11] In a 2015 interview on the Outtakes radio program, Genzel discussed her involvement with the project and her role in the film.[12]
The 2016 horror-comedy They're Watching combined found-footage horror with dark comedy set in Eastern Europe as a reality television crew films there. The New York Times reviewed it, describing its premise of reality TV capturing eerie events.[13] Soap Central covered Genzel's involvement, noting that the All My Children alumna was continuing to build her film résumé.[14]
She's also worked as a film producer, expanding her involvement in entertainment beyond performing roles.[1]
Continued Television Work
Through the 2010s and into the 2020s, she's kept working steadily. Her career shows a willingness to work across different programming types: daytime drama, prime-time genre shows, cable and streaming series. Entertainment outlets have tracked her appearances over the years, frequently noting her soap opera background when covering her newer roles.[2][15]
The New York Times archived a profile that mentioned Genzel among the actors working consistently in American film and television productions.[16]
The New York Daily News also profiled Genzel's work in the context of broader industry trends, showing how she navigated the shift from traditional network soap operas to the wider array of cable and digital platforms.[17]
Coverage in the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida also appeared during the height of her daytime prominence, reflecting the broad geographic reach of her audience as a soap opera performer.[18]
Advocacy and Humanitarian Work
Outside entertainment, Genzel has been involved in advocacy and humanitarian efforts. She's been associated with AIR (Artists for International Rescue), an organization connecting artists and public figures with humanitarian causes. Her involvement was documented on AIR's official website, where she was listed as a team member.[19]
Her involvement with AIR reflects a pattern among entertainment professionals who use their public profiles to draw attention to humanitarian and environmental issues. While detailed accounts of specific campaigns or projects she's supported aren't extensively documented in available sources, her affiliation with AIR shows active engagement with causes beyond entertainment.
Personal Life
Genzel is married to Michael Rivellino.[1] The couple has kept a relatively private personal life, with limited public disclosure beyond their marriage. She's been based in the United States for much of her career, having moved from her native Vancouver to pursue opportunities in American television and film.
As a Canadian-born actress working primarily in American productions, she's part of a significant tradition of Canadian performers who've built careers in the American entertainment industry. Vancouver's role as a major production center gave her early exposure to the American side of the industry before she made the transition to work based primarily in the United States.
Legacy
Spanning more than three decades from 1990 to the present, her career reflects the evolving landscape of American television during a period of significant change. Her early work in daytime soap operas placed her within a genre that then commanded large audiences and substantial cultural influence. The soap opera industry underwent major contraction during the 2000s and 2010s, with several long-running series, including All My Children, being cancelled. Her ability to transition from daytime television to prime-time series, cable programming, and film showed adaptability that allowed her to sustain a working career through these shifts.
Skye Chandler on All My Children remains her most widely recognized role. Soap opera fan communities have continued to reference her work on the show years after she departed. Other actresses later took over the character, but her tenure contributed to Skye's development during a key period.
In the broader context of Canadian performers working in American entertainment, her career follows a path established by many Vancouver-born actors who used the city's production infrastructure as a gateway to American markets. Her work in genre film and television, particularly horror and science fiction, has also given her a following among fans of those specific genres, extending her audience beyond traditional soap opera viewership.
Her involvement in humanitarian advocacy through organizations like AIR has added another dimension to her public profile, connecting her entertainment work with broader social engagement.
