Carrie Genzel (born 18 September 1971) is a Canadian actress and film producer whose career spans more than three decades in television, film, and humanitarian advocacy. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she first gained recognition on American daytime television as Skye Chandler on the ABC soap opera All My Children. Since the 1990s, she has appeared across a wide range of television and film productions, from guest roles on Supernatural and Days of Our Lives to horror and science fiction films. She has also been affiliated with AIR (Artists for International Rescue), an organization connecting artists with humanitarian causes. Her range as a performer has allowed her to move between daytime drama, prime-time television, and independent film across multiple networks and platforms.
Early life
Carrie Genzel was born on 18 September 1971 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[1] She grew up in the Vancouver area. Limited biographical information is available regarding her parents, siblings, or childhood, but she developed an interest in performing arts early and began pursuing acting in the early 1990s.[2]
Vancouver had, by the late 20th century, become a significant center for North American film and television production. The city's proximity to Los Angeles and the steady flow of American productions filming in British Columbia created early opportunities for Canadian performers seeking work in both markets. The region's production infrastructure, often referred to as "Hollywood North," gave aspiring local actors direct exposure to American casting networks before making any formal move south.
Career
Daytime television and All My Children
Genzel began her professional acting career in the early 1990s with local work in Vancouver before transitioning to American television. Her most significant early role came as Skye Chandler on the long-running ABC daytime drama All My Children, a part that brought her to the attention of a national daytime audience.[2][3]
Created by Agnes Nixon, All My Children aired on ABC from 1970 to 2011, with a short-lived online revival through Prospect Park that ended in 2013. It was among the most popular and enduring soap operas in American television history. Skye Chandler was the daughter of Adam Chandler, one of the show's central recurring figures, and Genzel's performance drove several storylines during her tenure on the series. The show, when Genzel joined, commanded a large and devoted audience, and her role placed her within one of daytime television's most prominent casts.[3]
When Agnes Nixon died in September 2016, Genzel was among the actors and industry figures who reflected publicly on her legacy and contributions to the genre.[4] Nixon had been a defining figure in American daytime television, and Genzel's work in All My Children connected her directly to that tradition.
Years after leaving the show, Skye Chandler remained tied to Genzel's public profile in soap opera fan communities. She was regularly referenced in soap opera media as a notable alumna of the series.[5] Other actresses later took over the character, but her tenure contributed to Skye's development during a key period in the show's run.
Prime-time and genre television
After her daytime work, Genzel expanded into prime-time and genre television, taking on roles across several networks and formats. One appearance came on the science fiction series Flash Gordon, which ran on the Syfy channel. The New York Daily News reviewed the show and its cast during its original broadcast run.[6]
In 2015, she appeared in an episode of the CW series Supernatural, one of American television's longest-running genre programs. The casting drew attention from both Supernatural fans and soap opera media, which noted that the former All My Children star had joined the long-running series.[7] The show had built a particularly active fan community over its many seasons, and her episode placed her within that well-established viewership.[8]
She also appeared on the BET series Sistas, marking her presence across multiple cable networks. Coverage of her guest role highlighted her soap opera background alongside her transition into other television formats.[9] She also appeared on Days of Our Lives, another long-running American soap opera, returning to the daytime genre that first established her career.[10]
Film career
Genzel has maintained an active film career alongside her television work, with a focus on horror and science fiction projects. In 2015, she appeared in Dead Rising: Watchtower, a feature film based on the popular Dead Rising video game franchise. The film drew on the zombie apocalypse themes of the game series and received coverage in entertainment media when its trailer was released.[11] In a March 2015 interview on the Outtakes radio program, Genzel discussed her role and her involvement with the project in detail.[12]
The following year brought the horror-comedy They're Watching (2016), a found-footage film with dark comic elements set against a reality television backdrop in Eastern Europe. The New York Times reviewed the film, describing its premise of a reality television crew capturing eerie events on location.[13] Soap Central covered Genzel's involvement in the project, noting her continued film work as an All My Children alumna building her screen resume outside the soap opera genre.[14]
Beyond performing, she has also worked as a film producer, expanding her professional role in the industry beyond acting credits alone.[1]
Continued television work
Through the 2010s and into the 2020s, Genzel has remained active across multiple platforms. Her career reflects a willingness to work across different programming types: daytime drama, prime-time genre programming, and cable series. Entertainment outlets have consistently tracked her appearances, frequently citing her soap opera background when covering her newer roles.[2][15]
The New York Times archived a profile that placed Genzel among the actors working consistently in American film and television production.[16] The New York Daily News also covered her work in the context of broader industry trends, addressing how she handled the shift from traditional network soap operas to the wider range of cable and digital platforms available to working actors.[17] During the height of her daytime prominence, the Sun-Sentinel in South Florida also ran coverage of her work, reflecting how widely soap opera audiences were distributed geographically during the genre's peak years.[18]
Advocacy and humanitarian work
Outside of her entertainment career, Genzel has been involved in advocacy and humanitarian efforts. She has been affiliated with AIR (Artists for International Rescue), an organization that connects artists and public figures with humanitarian and environmental causes. Her involvement was documented on AIR's official website, where she was listed as a team member.[19]
Her affiliation with AIR reflects a broader pattern among entertainment professionals who use public visibility to draw attention to causes beyond their industries. The organization's work sits at the intersection of arts and international relief efforts, and Genzel's membership shows active engagement with humanitarian work outside the scope of her acting and producing career.
Personal life
Genzel is married to Michael Rivellino.[1] The couple has maintained a private personal life, with limited public disclosure beyond their marriage. She has been based in the United States for much of her career, having relocated from her native Vancouver to pursue opportunities in American television and film.
As a Canadian-born actress working primarily in American productions, she is part of a longstanding tradition of Canadian performers who have built careers in the American entertainment industry. Vancouver's established role as a major production center gave her early and direct exposure to American casting and production infrastructure before she made that transition fully.
Legacy
Spanning more than three decades from the early 1990s to the present, her career reflects the changing landscape of American television through a period of significant structural shifts. Her early work in daytime soap operas placed her within a genre that once commanded large audiences and substantial cultural reach. The soap opera industry contracted sharply during the 2000s and 2010s, with several long-running series, including All My Children, being cancelled. Her ability to move from daytime television into prime-time series, cable programming, and film showed real adaptability through those industry changes.
Skye Chandler on All My Children remains her most widely recognized role. Soap opera fan communities have continued referencing her work on the series long after her departure. In the broader context of Canadian performers working in American entertainment, her career follows a path established by many Vancouver-born actors who used the city's production infrastructure as a professional gateway. Her work in genre film and television, particularly horror and science fiction, has given her a following among fans of those specific forms, extending her audience well beyond traditional soap opera viewership. Her humanitarian advocacy through AIR has added a further dimension to her public profile, connecting her entertainment work with broader social engagement.
