Originally selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Sherman has spent the majority of his professional career developing on practice squads while seeking a permanent place on an active roster. After stints with the Patriots and the Denver Broncos — where he spent three seasons on the practice squad — Sherman signed with the New Orleans Saints in September 2025 and made his first career NFL start in December 2025 against the New York Jets. His path through the league has been characterized by persistence and adaptability, transitioning between positions on the offensive line as opportunities have arisen.
Career
Early Professional Career
Will Sherman entered the NFL as a sixth-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft.[1] The pick reflected his potential as a versatile offensive lineman, though his early years in the league would be spent largely in developmental roles.
Denver Broncos
Sherman subsequently joined the Denver Broncos, where he spent three seasons on the practice squad. During his time in Denver, Sherman worked to develop his skills and maintain his readiness for an opportunity on the active roster. Heading into the 2025 season, there was anticipation that Sherman, wearing jersey number 78, could finally break through to the Broncos' active roster after his extended tenure on the practice squad.[2]
However, that breakthrough did not materialize in Denver. On August 26, 2025, according to reporting by Mike Klis of 9News, the Denver Broncos waived Sherman.[3]
New Orleans Saints
Following his release from the Broncos, Sherman quickly found a new home. In September 2025, during Week Three of the 2025 NFL season, the New Orleans Saints signed Sherman to their practice squad as part of a series of roster moves that also included the signing of safety Terrell Burgess and other transactions.[4] According to the Saints' official player biography, Sherman provided valuable depth to the offensive line upon joining the team.[5]
On December 3, 2025, the Saints announced additional roster moves that included the signing of wide receiver Dante Pettis and guard William Sherman to the active roster, reflecting the team's confidence in Sherman's readiness to contribute at the NFL level.[6]
The culmination of Sherman's years of perseverance came on December 21, 2025, when he made his first career NFL start, playing guard for the Saints in their Week 16 matchup against the New York Jets. The following day, on December 22, 2025, Sherman spoke with the media at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center about the milestone, addressing reporters the day after the game.[7]
In January 2026, Sherman appeared on the Sports Drive program alongside Jamel Acosta-Lewis and Jeff Williams, discussing his career and experiences in the NFL.[8]
Personal Life
Sherman's journey through the NFL has been defined by his willingness to remain on practice squads for extended periods while continuing to develop his skills. His transition from an offensive tackle — the position listed by the Saints in their initial player biography — to guard, the position at which he made his first career start, reflects his versatility along the offensive line.[5]
