Thomas Marge is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of Rewbi, a San Francisco-based startup that uses artificial intelligence to optimize grid-connected battery storage systems. Rewbi was part of the Y Combinator Summer 2024 batch.[1]

Early life and education

Marge holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) in Pure and Applied Mathematics and a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. He subsequently began a PhD in Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge but left the program to pursue ventures in the energy technology sector.

Career

Prior to founding Rewbi, Marge founded inBalance, an energy storage optimization startup that was part of the Y Combinator Winter 2021 batch. InBalance focused on using AI and mathematical modeling to improve battery dispatch and energy market forecasting. The company was acquired by Stem, Inc., a publicly traded energy storage company, where Marge subsequently served as Director of Product, working on battery storage and energy market forecasting.

In 2024, Marge co-founded Rewbi alongside Derek Modzelewski. The company's core business involves using AI to optimize the charging and discharging schedules of grid-connected battery storage systems. Rewbi's model centers on renting battery storage capacity for a fixed monthly fee and generating revenue by charging batteries when electricity prices are low and discharging when prices are high. The company states that its AI-driven approach can achieve approximately twice the revenue of traditional methods, which typically rely on human traders manually tracking grid conditions.[2]

According to the company, electricity prices on the grid can change every five minutes, often varying by 300% or more. Battery storage systems can adjust their power output significantly faster than traditional power generation sources such as hydro, coal, nuclear, or natural gas. Rewbi's AI processes hundreds of live inputs to make dispatch decisions more rapidly and with lower overhead than human operators. The company is registered with ERCOT, the grid operator for most of Texas, indicating active operations in that market.

Marge presented Rewbi at the AI Showcase at Slush 2024 in Helsinki, Finland. The company operates in the energy storage, B2B, renewable energy, and climate technology sectors.
