Teresa Giudice (/dʒuːˈdɪtʃeɪ/; née Gorga; born May 18, 1972) is an American television personality, author, and entrepreneur who rose to prominence as one of the original cast members of the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of New Jersey, which premiered in 2009. Over the course of more than a decade on the series, Giudice became one of the most recognizable figures in the Real Housewives franchise, known for her Italian-American family life, outspoken personality, and a series of highly publicized legal and financial troubles that culminated in a federal fraud conviction and prison sentence. Outside of reality television, she authored multiple New York Times bestselling cookbooks featuring Italian recipes and competed on The Celebrity Apprentice 5 in 2012. Her personal life — including the dissolution of her marriage to Joe Giudice, her subsequent remarriage to Luis Ruelas, and her complex family dynamics with brother Joe Gorga and sister-in-law Melissa Gorga — has remained a subject of sustained media attention. In January 2026, Giudice announced plans to open a restaurant with her eldest daughter, Gia Giudice, further expanding her business ventures beyond television and publishing.

Early Life

Teresa Gorga was born on May 18, 1972, in Paterson, New Jersey, to Giacinto and Antonia Gorga, Italian immigrants who raised their family in the traditions of their homeland.[1] She grew up in a close-knit Italian-American household where family, food, and cultural heritage were central to daily life. Teresa has a younger brother, Joe Gorga, who would later also appear on The Real Housewives of New Jersey alongside his wife, Melissa Gorga.

The Gorga family's roots in Italian cuisine and traditions would later become a defining element of Giudice's public identity, informing her cookbooks and her persona on reality television. Her mother, Antonia Gorga, was a significant figure in her life; Antonia died at age 66, a loss that was widely covered in the media.[2]

Teresa married Giuseppe "Joe" Giudice in 1999.[1] The couple settled in New Jersey and had four daughters together: Gia, Gabriella, Milania, and Audriana. The family's life in Montville, New Jersey — specifically in the Towaco section — would become a backdrop for much of the drama depicted on The Real Housewives of New Jersey and in subsequent media coverage of the family's legal difficulties.

Career

The Real Housewives of New Jersey

Giudice became a household name through her role on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, which premiered on Bravo in May 2009. She was one of the original cast members of the series, which followed the lives of a group of women in the affluent communities of northern New Jersey.[1] The show quickly became one of the highest-rated entries in the Real Housewives franchise, and Giudice emerged as its most prominent and polarizing figure.

Throughout the series, Giudice became known for her extravagant lifestyle, including lavish spending on designer goods, home renovations, and large-scale family events. She was also known for her volatile on-screen confrontations with other cast members. One of the most enduring storylines across multiple seasons involved her contentious relationship with her brother Joe Gorga and sister-in-law Melissa Gorga, who joined the cast in later seasons. Their family disputes, which played out publicly on camera and in the tabloid press, became a central narrative thread of the show.

By November 2025, Giudice revealed details about steps toward reconciliation with her brother Joe Gorga, describing what she called an "unexpected catalyst" in their long-fraught relationship.[3] However, in March 2026, Melissa Gorga publicly stated she was "confused" by Giudice's hints at being open to reconciliation, saying "the door has been closed."[4]

Giudice's time on the show also documented her legal troubles, her period of incarceration, and her eventual return to the cast. The series covered the impact of her criminal case on her family, including the separation of her daughters from both parents during the periods when she and then her husband served their respective prison sentences.

Cookbooks and Publishing

Beyond reality television, Giudice established herself as a published author, writing several cookbooks that drew on her Italian-American heritage and family recipes. Her first cookbook achieved New York Times bestseller status, appearing on the newspaper's bestseller list for paperback advice books.[5] The success of her initial book led to additional cookbook publications, each featuring Italian family recipes alongside personal stories and photographs.

Following her release from prison, Giudice authored a memoir titled Turning the Tables, which detailed her experiences during her incarceration and the impact on her family.[6] The memoir provided a first-person account of her time in federal prison and her reflections on the legal proceedings that led to her conviction.

The Celebrity Apprentice

In 2012, Giudice appeared as a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice 5, the reality competition series hosted by Donald Trump.[7] Her appearance on the show brought her to a wider national audience beyond the Real Housewives viewership. Giudice was ultimately eliminated from the competition alongside comedian Lisa Lampanelli.[8]

Business Ventures

Giudice has pursued several entrepreneurial ventures over the course of her career. She launched a hair care product line called Milania Hair Care, named after her third daughter.[9]

In January 2026, Giudice and her eldest daughter Gia announced plans to open a restaurant called Il Vero, with an anticipated opening in spring 2026.[10] The venture represented a significant expansion of Giudice's business interests and drew on her long-established connection to Italian cuisine through her cookbooks.

Legal Troubles and Incarceration

Federal Indictment

In July 2013, Teresa and her then-husband Joe Giudice were charged in a 39-count federal indictment with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, making false statements on loan applications, and bankruptcy fraud. The indictment alleged that the couple had engaged in a scheme to defraud lenders and illegally obtain mortgages and other loans, as well as concealing assets and income during a bankruptcy case filed in 2009.[11]

According to the charges, the Giudices submitted fraudulent mortgage and loan applications between 2001 and 2008, in which they made false claims about their employment and income. Joe Giudice was also charged with failing to file tax returns for the years 2004 through 2008, during which time he allegedly earned nearly $1 million.[12]

The indictment drew significant media attention, with outlets noting the contrast between the couple's lavish lifestyle as depicted on The Real Housewives of New Jersey and the alleged financial fraud underlying it. Reporting at the time highlighted that the Giudices' opulent spending — including their large custom-built home, designer wardrobes, and expensive vehicles — appeared to have been funded in part through fraudulent means.[13]

Sentencing

The couple returned to court multiple times as the case proceeded.[14] Both Teresa and Joe Giudice ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges. In October 2014, Teresa was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison, while Joe received a sentence of 41 months.[15] The judge arranged for the sentences to be served consecutively rather than concurrently, so that one parent could remain with the couple's four daughters at all times.

Teresa reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, in January 2015 to begin serving her sentence.[16] During her time in prison, she reportedly spent time exercising and watching television, including the series Empire.[17]

Release and Aftermath

Teresa Giudice was released from prison in December 2015, after serving approximately 11 months of her 15-month sentence.[18] She returned to her family home in the Towaco section of Montville, New Jersey, where her husband and four daughters had been residing during her incarceration.

Joe Giudice subsequently began serving his 41-month sentence in March 2016.[19] Born in Italy and a non-citizen of the United States, Joe faced deportation proceedings following his release from prison.

As part of the financial fallout from their legal troubles, the Giudices' shore home was sold in 2015.[20]

Joe Giudice had previously also faced legal issues related to driving, with his license having been revoked for two years.[21]

Personal Life

Teresa Giudice married Giuseppe "Joe" Giudice in 1999. The couple had four daughters together: Gia, Gabriella, Milania, and Audriana. Their marriage endured significant strain throughout the legal proceedings and their respective periods of incarceration. The couple divorced in 2020, following Joe Giudice's deportation from the United States to Italy after completing his prison sentence.

In 2022, Giudice married Luis "Louie" Ruelas. The wedding was a widely covered media event. As of early 2026, Giudice and Ruelas have publicly discussed their relationship in positive terms; Ruelas was reported to be looking to the "future" with Giudice in an emotional marriage update shared in February 2026.[22] In January 2026, Giudice described herself as "grateful" in a further update about her marriage.[23]

Giudice's daughters have increasingly appeared in public life. As of March 2026, daughter Gabriella was pursuing college studies, including a period of studying abroad, and had shared details about her summer plans and career path.[24] Youngest daughter Audriana attended junior prom in March 2026 with the son of Real Housewives of New Jersey cast member Jennifer Aydin.[25]

Giudice has been involved in charitable work, including with Project Ladybug, a charity organization.[26]

The relationship between Giudice and her brother Joe Gorga and sister-in-law Melissa Gorga has been a subject of ongoing public interest. Their family disputes were a prominent feature of The Real Housewives of New Jersey for several seasons. While Giudice indicated in late 2025 that she was open to reconciliation with her brother, the dynamic with Melissa Gorga remained strained as of early 2026.

Recognition

Giudice's cookbooks achieved New York Times bestseller status, placing her among the most commercially successful authors to emerge from reality television.[27] Her first cookbook appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for paperback advice books in June 2010, and subsequent cookbooks also performed well commercially.

Her appearance on The Celebrity Apprentice 5 in 2012 extended her visibility beyond the Real Housewives audience and established her as a recognizable figure in broader popular culture.[28]

As a central figure on The Real Housewives of New Jersey for over a decade, Giudice became one of the most prominent cast members in the history of the broader Real Housewives franchise. Her on-screen moments, family dynamics, and personal story arcs have generated sustained media coverage across entertainment outlets. The show's depiction of her legal troubles, imprisonment, and return to television made her one of the most discussed reality television personalities in the United States.

Giudice has remained a regular subject of tabloid and entertainment media coverage. Her public persona has continued to generate discussion and commentary, including from other television personalities. In March 2026, Flavor of Love star Tiffany "New York" Pollard made widely covered comments about Giudice's appearance.[29]

Legacy

Teresa Giudice's career in reality television spans more than 15 years, during which time she became one of the defining figures of the Real Housewives franchise. Her presence on The Real Housewives of New Jersey from its premiere helped establish the series as one of the most-watched entries in the franchise and contributed to the broader cultural phenomenon of reality television in the 2000s and 2010s.

Her legal case and incarceration brought national attention to issues of financial fraud and the consequences of deceptive lending practices during the era surrounding the 2008 financial crisis. The highly public nature of her prosecution and imprisonment — covered extensively by both entertainment and news media — made her case one of the most prominent celebrity fraud cases of the 2010s.

Through her cookbooks, Giudice brought Italian-American home cooking to a wide audience, achieving bestseller status and introducing readers to traditional Italian family recipes. Her transition from reality television personality to published author demonstrated the commercial potential of the reality television platform for building multimedia careers.

Her family's story — including the challenges of maintaining family life during incarceration, navigating divorce and deportation, and rebuilding after legal and financial devastation — resonated with audiences and ensured her continued relevance in popular culture. As of 2026, with the announcement of her restaurant venture Il Vero with daughter Gia, Giudice continues to expand her professional endeavors beyond the reality television format that first brought her to public attention.
