Potter's published work centers on sexual violence and relationship violence prevention, with particular attention to college and high school populations. Her research has examined sexual harassment of undergraduate students in STEM fields, sexual and relationship violence among LGBTQ+ college students, bystander intervention among community college students, and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on both research productivity and campus violence prevention efforts.[2]

Potter's research has been supported by federal funding. National Science Foundation records show three awards to the University of New Hampshire totaling $880,908, supporting the development and commercialization of a mobile platform technology aimed at preventing and responding to high school and teen dating violence.[4] These included a Partnerships for Innovation award of $580,908 awarded April 23, 2021, a Partnerships for Innovation Technology Translation award of $250,000 awarded July 29, 2019, and an I-Corps award of $50,000 awarded December 15, 2017, the latter supporting a platform to help prevent and respond to sexual assault.[5]
National Institutes of Health records show a grant of $543,425 to the University of New Hampshire for a pilot study of cross-cutting e-health prevention approaches addressing campus sexual assault and alcohol misuse.[6]
