Senthil Vel is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Maine. His research concerns the mechanics of functionally graded materials, composite structures, and thermoelastic behavior of layered and graded plates and shells.[1]

Education

Vel received a B.Tech in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 1993.[2] He subsequently earned an M.A. in mathematics and an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996.[3] He completed a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1998.[4]

Career

Vel began his academic training as a Graduate Teaching Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh from 1993 to 1996.[5] He then served as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1996 to 1998, followed by a postdoctoral research position in the same department from 1999 to 2000.[6]

In 2000, Vel joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine as an Assistant Professor.[7] He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and to Professor in 2011, a position he continues to hold.[8]

Research

Vel's work has focused on the mechanical and thermal behavior of functionally graded and composite materials, including analytical solutions for the vibration and thermoelastic deformation of graded rectangular plates, cylindrical shells, and layered piezoelectric structures.[9] According to Semantic Scholar, his published output includes 95 papers that have collectively been cited 4,275 times, with an h-index of 33.[10]

He has received funding from the National Science Foundation for two projects totaling $471,079. The first, "Design of Functionally Graded Materials Using Transient Nonlinear Simulations and Genetic Algorithm Optimization," was awarded on August 4, 2004, with funding of $276,076 to the University of Maine.[11] The second, "Collaborative Research: Multiscale analysis of geological structures that influence crustal seismic anisotropy," was awarded on July 16, 2010, with funding of $195,003 to the University of Maine.[12]
