Ethan Gibbs is an American software entrepreneur and co-founder of Embedder, an artificial intelligence-powered coding agent designed to write, test, and debug firmware for embedded systems. The company, described as "Cursor for Firmware," is a participant in Y Combinator's Summer 2025 batch and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.[1]

Early life and education

Gibbs studied computer science at the University of Michigan, attending from 2022 to 2025. While in college, he worked at three startups, including two that were backed by Y Combinator. He met his co-founder, Bob Wei, through startup clubs at Michigan. Outside of technology, Gibbs is a globally ranked creator in the game Geometry Dash and earned over $10,000 competing in Fortnite tournaments.[2]

Career

Gibbs co-founded Embedder to address what he identified as a lack of modern AI-assisted development tools for embedded software engineers. The product functions as a coding agent that can autonomously write, test, and debug firmware — tasks that have traditionally required extensive manual effort due to the close coupling of software with specific hardware constraints.[3]

Embedder works by analyzing an existing codebase, hardware configuration files, datasheets, and schematics to generate firmware tailored to specific microcontroller platforms. The tool supports a range of hardware families, including STM32, ESP32, and nRF series chips, and is designed to understand architecture-specific peripherals and constraints such as register maps, timing requirements, and errata. A key feature of the platform is hardware-in-the-loop validation, in which Embedder connects to serial interfaces, SWD/JTAG debuggers, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes to monitor firmware execution in real time on target hardware.[4]

The company operates in the developer tools, hardware, B2B, and AI sectors. Prior to joining Y Combinator's Summer 2025 batch, Gibbs and his co-founder raised $50,000 at the University of Michigan's Demo Day.[5] As of early 2026, the product is at version 0.3.0 and is available for free trial use.
