Rebecca Callahan is a professor of education at the University of Vermont. Her research addresses the education of English learner students, including course-taking patterns, tracking, and disproportionality in special education placement.[1]

Education

Callahan received her Ph.D. in Education from the University of California, Davis, completing the degree between 1999 and 2003.[2]

Career

Callahan began her postdoctoral work as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Language Minority Research Institution at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2003 to 2004.[3] She then held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Population Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin from 2004 to 2006.[4]

She joined the University of Georgia as an Assistant Professor in Language and Literacy Education from 2006 to 2009.[5] Callahan then moved to the University of Texas at Austin, where she was an Assistant Professor in Curriculum & Instruction from 2009 to 2015, and was promoted to Associate Professor in the same department from 2015 to 2018.[6] She subsequently held an Associate Professor appointment in Educational Leadership & Policy at the University of Texas at Austin from 2018 to 2021.[7]

Since 2021, Callahan has been a Professor of Education at the University of Vermont.[8]

Research

According to Semantic Scholar, Callahan has authored 50 papers that have been cited a total of 2,392 times, with an h-index of 19.[9] Her work has examined tracking and opportunity to learn among high school English learners, the allocation of educational resources to English learners in California schools, disproportionality in learning disability identification by race, socioeconomic status, and language, and course-taking effects of ESL placement on academic achievement.[10]

While at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Georgia, Callahan received three National Science Foundation awards totaling $649,466. These included "Design Technology and Engineering Education for English Learner Students: Project DTEEL," awarded $445,964 on May 29, 2015, and two related awards for "RDE-FRI Collaborative Research: Students with Learning Disabilities: STEM Pathways in the Social Context," awarded $107,595 through the University of Georgia Research Foundation Inc on September 12, 2008, and $95,907 through the University of Texas at Austin on September 28, 2009.[11]
