Oded Shoseyov is an Israeli scientist, university professor, and serial entrepreneur. He is a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where his research combines plant molecular biology, protein engineering, and nanobiotechnology to develop advanced and sustainable materials. Alongside his academic work, Shoseyov has founded or co-founded about ten companies that have sought to commercialize technologies in plant biotechnology, nanomaterials, and clean technology, and he is a TED speaker known for a 2016 talk on engineering solutions drawn from biology.
Education and academic career
Shoseyov earned his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.[1] He is a faculty member of the university's Institute of Plant Sciences and Genetics in Agriculture, part of the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, where he holds the rank of professor.[2][3]
His research focuses on combining plant molecular biology, protein engineering, and nanobiotechnology to develop high-performing materials for affordable and sustainable applications, including bio-inspired nanocomposites.[2][3] Over his career he has been the author or co-author of more than 160 scientific publications and the inventor or co-inventor of more than 45 patents.[3][1]
Companies and commercialization
Shoseyov is described as the founder or co-founder of about ten companies working in plant biotechnology, nanomaterials, and clean technology.[3][1] Several of these have aimed to engineer new materials for uses ranging from human tissue to jet fuel and food packaging.[3]
Among the companies associated with his research are CollPlant, a regenerative-medicine company that produces plant-derived collagen and became publicly traded, and FuturaGene, a plant-biotechnology company later acquired by the Brazilian pulp-and-paper producer Suzano.[4] He is also a co-founder, board member, and consultant of Melodea, a company that develops materials from nanocrystalline cellulose.[1]
Recognition
Shoseyov has received several awards for his scientific and entrepreneurial work. He was given the Outstanding Scientist Polak Award in 2002 and the Hebrew University's Kaye Award for Innovative and Applied Research in 1999 and again in 2009.[1] In 2012 he received a citation from the Israeli Prime Minister for his contributions to entrepreneurship and innovation.[3][1]
TED talk
In September 2016, Shoseyov delivered a TED talk titled "How we're harnessing nature's hidden superpowers," in which he discussed using biological materials and natural processes as the basis for engineering new products.[3]
