Nimrat Chatterjee is a molecular biologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Vermont.[1] Her work focuses on translesion synthesis and DNA damage mutagenesis, including the identification of small molecule inhibitors of the Rev1-Polζ complex as a strategy to improve chemotherapy outcomes.[2]

Education

Chatterjee received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine in 2014.[3]

Career

From 2016 to 2020, Chatterjee was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[4] In 2020, she joined the University of Vermont as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics.[5]

Research

Chatterjee's research addresses mechanisms of DNA damage, repair, and mutagenesis, with a particular emphasis on translesion synthesis. According to Semantic Scholar, her publication record comprises 36 papers with a total of 2,218 citations and an h-index of 12.[6]

Her studies have examined small molecule inhibitors targeting the Rev1-CT/RIR protein-protein interaction as a means of disrupting translesion synthesis and enhancing chemotherapy efficacy, as well as the dimerization of Rev7 in the assembly of the Rev1/Polζ complex.[7] She has also investigated environmental stress as a driver of trinucleotide repeat mutagenesis in human cells and the DNA damage response triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection.[8]

Chatterjee has been supported by National Institutes of Health funding through a project titled "Mechanistic insights into translesion synthesis-dependent genome instability," administered through the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College, totaling $1,543,254 across award periods.[9]
