Momotaz Begum is a computer scientist at the University of New Hampshire, where she works on socially assistive robotics, including robots that support older adults with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia and robots used in autism interventions.[1]

Education

Begum received a B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, completed between 1997 and 2003.[2] She earned an M.Eng. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland, completed between 2003 and 2005.[3] She subsequently received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, completed between 2007 and 2010.[4]

Career

Begum joined the University of New Hampshire in 2016 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science.[5]

Research

Begum's publications include work on assistive robots for older adults, including individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia, and on the use of robots in autism interventions.[6][7] Other work spans mobile robot simultaneous localization and mapping, visual attention in robotic cognition, and human-robot interaction failure recovery.[8][9][10]

According to Semantic Scholar, her work has been cited 1,446 times across 84 papers, giving an h-index of 19.[11]

Begum has received research funding from the National Science Foundation, including a 2024 award for "SLES: Learning Safe Policy from Human Demonstrations to Support Robot-Assisted Aging-in-Place" ($1,499,417) and a 2018 award for "NRI: FND: Robust Learning of Sequential Motion from Human Demonstrations to Enable Robot-Guided Exercise Training" ($749,999), both at the University of New Hampshire.[12] She also received NSF CRII funding for "Human-Robot Collaboration in Special Education: A Robot that Learns Service Delivery from Teachers' Demonstrations," first at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2015 ($190,667) and subsequently at the University of New Hampshire in 2017 ($126,849).[13] Her National Science Foundation funding totals $2,566,932 across four awards.[14]

Begum has also received National Institutes of Health funding for the project "Effectiveness and adoption of a Smart home-based social assistive robot for care of individuals with Alzheimer's Disease" at the University of New Hampshire, across awards of $618,865, $689,054, and $675,015, totaling $2,594,234 across NIH projects.[15]
