Joe Fioti is an American entrepreneur and software engineer who is the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Luminal, a startup that develops a compiler-based framework for optimizing artificial intelligence inference on GPUs and ASICs. Prior to founding Luminal, Fioti worked on chip design at Intel.[1]

Career

Fioti worked as a chip designer at Intel before concluding that the more significant bottleneck in AI hardware performance lay in software rather than in the chips themselves. As he later explained, "You can make the best hardware on earth, but if it's hard for developers to use, they're just not going to use it."[2]

Fioti co-founded Luminal alongside Jake Stevens, who previously worked at Apple, and Matthew Gunton, who came from Amazon. The company was part of Y Combinator's Summer 2025 batch.[3]

Luminal's core product is an ahead-of-time compiler for AI models that differs from runtime inference engines such as PyTorch, which interpret models dynamically. The Luminal compiler lowers models into a minimal graph intermediate representation — a pure dataflow graph — then applies hardware-aware optimization passes including operator fusion, tiling, memory planning, and scheduling tuned for each target device. The final stage emits GPU kernels or ASIC instructions directly, eliminating runtime overhead. The company describes its approach as "compiled inference, not interpreted."[4]

In addition to the compiler, Luminal offers what it calls a "Hyperscale Inference OS," a system that dynamically schedules and load-balances inference workloads across heterogeneous compute clusters — including CPUs, GPUs, and ASICs — to minimize latency and maximize throughput.[5]

In November 2025, the company announced $5.3 million in seed funding led by Felicis Ventures, with angel investments from Paul Graham, Guillermo Rauch, and Ben Porterfield.[6]

According to his Crunchbase profile, Fioti has founded two organizations: Luminal and Sidekick AI. He is based in State College, Pennsylvania.[7]
