Michael Darrow Greenberg (born August 6, 1967), known professionally as Mike Greenberg and by the nickname Greeny, is an American television anchor, television and radio show host, and novelist who has spent more than three decades at ESPN and its affiliated networks. He first rose to national prominence as one-half of the long-running ESPN Radio program Mike & Mike, which he co-hosted with former NFL defensive lineman Mike Golic from 2000 to 2017. Since 2018, Greenberg has served as the anchor of ESPN's weekday morning television show Get Up, a role that has cemented his position as one of the network's most recognizable on-air personalities. Beyond his sports broadcasting career, Greenberg has hosted programming on ABC, including the game show Duel and Battle of the Network Stars, and has published multiple books, including a novel. In 2025, ESPN announced that Greenberg had made history at the network, underscoring the success of his transition from radio to morning television.[1] Greenberg has also taken on prominent roles in the network's NFL and NBA coverage, anchoring NBA Countdown and Sunday NFL Countdown. As of 2024, he hosts his own eponymous radio program, #Greeny, on ESPN Radio.

Early Life

Michael Darrow Greenberg was born on August 6, 1967, in New York City, United States. Growing up in the New York metropolitan area, Greenberg developed an early interest in sports and media. Details of his childhood and family background remain largely private, though his New York roots have been a recurring element of his on-air persona throughout his career, particularly in his support of New York-area sports teams.

Greenberg's formative years in one of the country's largest media markets exposed him to the intersection of sports and journalism from a young age. His interest in pursuing a career in broadcasting led him to seek formal education in journalism at a nationally recognized program.

Education

Greenberg attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he enrolled in the Medill School of Journalism, one of the most prominent journalism programs in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Medill, a program known for producing graduates who go on to careers in print, broadcast, and digital journalism.[2] His training at Northwestern provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span television, radio, and publishing. Greenberg has frequently credited his education at Medill as instrumental in shaping his approach to storytelling and his ability to communicate with audiences across multiple platforms.

Career

Early Career and ESPN Beginnings

Greenberg began his professional broadcasting career in 1989, working in local and regional media before joining ESPN. His early years in the industry involved honing his skills as an on-air presenter and reporter, building the experience that would later serve him in national broadcasting roles. After joining ESPN, Greenberg worked as a SportsCenter anchor, hosting weekday evening editions of the flagship sports news program, most frequently the Monday edition. His polished delivery and ability to balance sports analysis with accessible presentation helped him establish a foothold at the network.

Mike & Mike (2000–2017)

In 2000, Greenberg was paired with former NFL defensive lineman Mike Golic for a new ESPN Radio program called Mike & Mike. The show aired weekday mornings from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. ET and was simulcast on ESPN2, making it both a radio and television property.[3] The program became one of the most successful sports radio shows in the United States, running for 17 years.

The chemistry between Greenberg and Golic was central to the show's appeal. Greenberg, with his journalism background and polished on-air style, served as a complement to Golic's perspective as a former professional athlete. The pairing created a dynamic that balanced informed sports commentary with humor and accessible conversation. In a 2025 interview, Greenberg reflected on the formula that made the show endure, stating that he believed avoiding "hot takes" was a key factor in the program's longevity and success.[4] Rather than relying on deliberately provocative or contrarian opinions designed to generate controversy, Greenberg and Golic built their audience through what Greenberg characterized as more genuine and measured sports discussion.

Over its run, Mike & Mike became a cornerstone of ESPN's radio programming and a significant part of the network's morning content strategy. The show's reach extended well beyond traditional radio, as the ESPN2 simulcast brought the program to television audiences and helped establish Greenberg as a familiar face on screen as well as a recognizable voice on radio.

The show came to an end in 2017, a transition that was widely covered in sports media.[5] The conclusion of the program marked the end of an era for ESPN Radio and set the stage for the next major phase of Greenberg's career.

Television Hosting: Duel and Battle of the Network Stars

During his years on Mike & Mike, Greenberg expanded his television portfolio beyond ESPN's sports programming. In 2007, he was selected to host Duel, a prime-time game show that aired on ABC, ESPN's sister network under the Disney corporate umbrella. The show debuted in December 2007 and ran into 2008.[6] The hosting role represented a significant crossover opportunity for Greenberg, introducing him to a broader entertainment audience beyond the sports world.

Greenberg also co-hosted Battle of the Network Stars on ABC alongside Joe Tessitore, further demonstrating his versatility as a television presenter. These ABC hosting roles reflected ESPN and Disney's confidence in Greenberg's ability to connect with audiences in formats outside of traditional sports programming.

In addition to his game show hosting, Greenberg made appearances on other television programs. In 2007, he and Golic appeared on the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light, a cameo that illustrated the cultural reach of the Mike & Mike brand beyond sports media.[7] Greenberg also served as a guest co-host on Live with Kelly, the popular ABC daytime talk show.[8]

Get Up (2018–present)

In April 2018, Greenberg transitioned from radio to anchor Get Up, ESPN's new weekday morning television program.[9] The move from Mike & Mike to a morning television show represented a significant career pivot. As ESPN noted in early 2026, the decision to leave a successful and established radio program for the uncertainty of a new television venture was a considerable gamble for Greenberg.[10]

Get Up airs on weekday mornings on ESPN and features a mix of sports news, analysis, debate, and interviews. As the primary anchor, Greenberg guides discussions with rotating panels of analysts, reporters, and former athletes covering the major storylines in professional and college sports. The show covers the NFL, NBA, college football, and other major sports, with Greenberg serving as the central figure who frames discussions and steers conversations.

The gamble paid off. In January 2026, ESPN announced that Greenberg had made history at the network in 2025, a milestone that highlighted the program's growth and Greenberg's central role in ESPN's morning programming strategy.[10] The success of Get Up established Greenberg as one of ESPN's most prominent daytime television personalities, building on the audience recognition he had cultivated over nearly two decades on radio.

As the host of Get Up, Greenberg has not shied away from expressing strong opinions on sports topics. In November 2025, he publicly criticized two prominent NFL head coaches on the program, generating significant attention in sports media.[11] In October 2025, Greenberg was accused of "irresponsible" behavior on ESPN, a characterization that drew media coverage and debate about the role of opinion in sports broadcasting.[12] Such moments have kept Greenberg in the sports media conversation and reflect the nature of his role as a morning show host who must balance analysis with the expectations of a daily opinion-driven format.

NFL and NBA Coverage

Beyond his morning show duties, Greenberg has taken on anchor roles in ESPN's coverage of major professional sports leagues. He has served as an anchor of NBA Countdown, ESPN's pre-game and halftime show for NBA coverage, and has also anchored Sunday NFL Countdown, the network's long-running NFL pre-game show. These assignments have placed Greenberg at the center of ESPN's coverage during the busiest periods of the professional sports calendar, further expanding his visibility and role within the network.

#Greeny Radio Show

In 2020, Greenberg returned to ESPN Radio with a new program called #Greeny (stylized with a hashtag), a daily radio show that allowed him to maintain a presence on the platform where he first achieved national recognition.[13] The show, which continued as of 2024, provides Greenberg with a forum for extended sports discussion and commentary outside of the television format of Get Up. The radio program's name reflects the nickname that has followed Greenberg throughout his career and has become closely associated with his brand.

Writing Career

In addition to his broadcasting work, Greenberg has pursued a career as an author. He has published multiple books, including the novel All You Could Ask For, released by HarperCollins.[14] The novel represented a departure from sports writing and demonstrated Greenberg's range as a writer. His earlier works were recognized by literary organizations; one of his books received attention from the Quill Awards.[15]

Greenberg's writing career has run parallel to his broadcasting work, and his books have allowed him to reach audiences who may not be regular viewers or listeners of his ESPN programs. His willingness to work across multiple media formats — radio, television, and print — has been a defining characteristic of his career.

Personal Life

Greenberg has two children. He has generally maintained a boundary between his public professional life and his private family life, though certain personal matters have become public. In June 2025, Greenberg spoke openly about being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib), a heart condition characterized by an irregular and often rapid heart rate. In an interview with the New York Post, Greenberg described the experience of living with the condition, recalling that he "couldn't live like that" due to the fear and anxiety it caused regarding his own body. He discussed how he eventually managed the condition and regained a sense of normalcy in his daily life.[16] Greenberg's willingness to discuss his health publicly brought attention to AFib, a condition that affects millions of Americans.

In March 2026, Greenberg paid tribute on Get Up to legendary college football coach Lou Holtz, who had recently died. Greenberg recalled that Holtz had given him "the best advice anyone ever gave me," a moment that resonated with viewers and reflected the personal connections Greenberg has built over decades in sports media.[17][18]

Recognition

Greenberg's career spanning more than three decades at ESPN has resulted in recognition both within the sports media industry and beyond. His work on Mike & Mike helped establish ESPN Radio as a significant force in sports broadcasting, and the show's 17-year run made it one of the longest and most prominent programs in sports radio history. The program's success was built on the chemistry between Greenberg and Golic and, as Greenberg has noted, an approach that prioritized substantive discussion over deliberately provocative commentary.[19]

The transition to Get Up and its subsequent success earned Greenberg further recognition within the network. ESPN's announcement in early 2026 that Greenberg had made history in 2025 marked a public acknowledgment of his contributions to the network's programming.[10] At age 58, Greenberg remains one of the most prominent figures in daily sports television, anchoring both morning programming and major league pre-game shows.

His literary work has also received notice. His involvement with the Quill Awards in 2006 reflected recognition of his writing beyond the sports broadcasting world.[20]

Greenberg's ability to work across television, radio, and print — and to successfully navigate the transition from a long-running radio partnership to a solo-anchored morning television show — has distinguished him among sports media professionals of his generation.

Legacy

Mike Greenberg's career at ESPN, spanning from 1989 to the present, encompasses a period of dramatic change in sports media. He began his career in an era when cable sports television was still establishing its dominance, and he has adapted to the evolving landscape that now includes digital media, social media, and streaming platforms. His longevity at a single network in an industry known for frequent turnover is notable in itself.

The Mike & Mike era represented a model for sports radio that other programs sought to emulate: a pairing of a journalist and a former athlete, offering complementary perspectives in an accessible morning format. The show's 17-year run helped define what morning sports radio could be, and its influence extended to the development of other two-host sports programs across the radio and podcast landscape.

Greenberg's move to Get Up in 2018 illustrated a broader trend in sports media, where established radio personalities transitioned to television as networks sought to leverage familiar voices for new platforms. The success of that transition — confirmed by ESPN's own recognition of Greenberg's 2025 achievements — demonstrated that audience loyalty built on radio could be transferred to television.

His willingness to discuss personal health challenges, including his AFib diagnosis, has also contributed to public awareness of the condition. By speaking candidly about the fear and disruption the diagnosis caused, and the process of managing it, Greenberg used his platform to address a health issue that affects a significant portion of the population.

As of 2026, Greenberg continues to anchor Get Up and host #Greeny on ESPN Radio, maintaining a daily presence across multiple ESPN platforms. His career trajectory — from local broadcasting to national radio star to morning television anchor — reflects both the changing nature of sports media and the adaptability required to sustain a decades-long career in the industry.
