Linette Lopez is an American journalist and communications professional known for her investigative reporting on corporate finance, technology companies, and economic policy. Over the course of more than a decade at Business Insider (later known as Insider), Lopez built a reputation for her persistent and detailed coverage of Tesla, Inc. and its CEO Elon Musk, as well as broader reporting on Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and U.S.–China economic relations. Her work drew significant public attention, particularly during a series of confrontations with Musk that culminated in her suspension from Twitter in December 2022. Born in Elkins, West Virginia, Lopez was educated at Columbia University and went on to serve as a senior correspondent and columnist at Business Insider. She has contributed commentary to CNN, MSNBC, and Real Time with Bill Maher, and has taught as an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In January 2025, Lopez departed journalism to join ValueWorks, a hedge fund, as director of strategy and communications.
Early Life
Linette Lopez was born circa 1986 in Elkins, West Virginia.[1] Details about her family background and upbringing in West Virginia remain limited in publicly available sources. She later relocated to New York City to pursue her higher education and journalism career.
Education
Lopez attended Columbia University in New York City, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree.[1] Her graduate studies were completed at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, an institution with which she maintained a long-term affiliation, later returning to teach there as an adjunct professor.[2]
Career
Business Insider
Lopez spent the bulk of her journalism career at Business Insider, where she rose to the position of senior correspondent. Her beat encompassed technology, finance, economics, and international relations.[2] Over the years, she produced a wide range of reporting and opinion columns, covering topics from hedge fund culture to macroeconomic policy to corporate governance controversies.
In a 2014 feature article, Lopez wrote about her experience attending SALT, one of the largest hedge fund conferences accessible to non-industry attendees, held in Las Vegas. The piece offered an inside look at the culture and dynamics of the hedge fund world.[3]
A 2022 profile published by Business Insider described Lopez as someone who "regularly doubles down on Silicon Valley titans, Wall Street elites, and demagogue presidents," characterizing her editorial approach as one that combined deep financial analysis with a willingness to confront powerful figures and institutions.[4]
In addition to her work at Business Insider, Lopez contributed articles to Entrepreneur magazine and wrote for the World Economic Forum's online platform.[5][6]
Tesla and Elon Musk Coverage
Lopez became one of the most prominent journalists covering Tesla, Inc. and its CEO Elon Musk. Her reporting scrutinized various aspects of Tesla's operations, finances, and corporate culture, and she developed a sustained focus on the company over several years.
A significant dimension of Lopez's Tesla coverage involved Martin Tripp, a former Tesla employee who became a whistleblower. Bloomberg News reported in March 2019 on Musk's efforts to discredit Tripp, a story intertwined with the broader reporting Lopez had conducted on internal problems at Tesla.[7] The legal dispute between Tesla and Tripp was eventually settled, with the former worker agreeing to pay $400,000 to resolve the matter.[8]
Lopez's critical coverage of Tesla led to direct confrontations with Musk. In July 2018, Slate published an article detailing Musk's personal attacks on Lopez, with the headline asserting that "Elon Musk's attacks on reporter Linette Lopez need to stop." The piece described a pattern of Musk targeting the journalist on social media in response to her reporting.[9] The Los Angeles Times also covered what it described as a "meltdown" by Musk during this period, part of which involved his public criticisms of journalists including Lopez.[10]
The tensions between Lopez and Musk reached a new peak in December 2022, after Musk acquired Twitter. On December 16, 2022, Lopez's Twitter account was suspended. The Daily Beast reported that Lopez stated she had not tweeted details about the location of Musk's private jet — the rationale Musk had publicly offered for suspending several other journalists' accounts during the same period. The Daily Beast noted that Lopez had "investigated him for years," framing her suspension as part of a broader pattern of Musk targeting critical reporters on the platform he now owned.[11]
The mass suspension of journalist accounts on Twitter drew widespread media coverage and condemnation. The New York Times reported on December 17, 2022, that Twitter lifted the suspensions on several journalists, including Lopez, amid growing criticism of the platform's actions.[12] WITF, a public media outlet, also reported on the lifting of the suspensions, describing a "rift between the site and media."[13]
Following her reinstatement, Lopez appeared on MSNBC's "Alex Wagner Tonight" to discuss her suspension and to share her views on why Musk's temperament made him poorly suited to run a social media platform.[14]
Yahoo Finance covered Lopez's characterization of Musk's behavior in the context of her broader reporting on Tesla's corporate governance and financial practices.[15]
U.S.–China Relations and Financial Commentary
Beyond her Tesla coverage, Lopez produced notable work on U.S.–China economic relations. Her 2019 opinion piece titled "The Huawei indictment marks the end of US and China's cycle of trust" was recognized by the New York State Society of CPAs as an example of distinguished financial journalism. The piece analyzed the broader geopolitical and economic implications of the U.S. government's criminal charges against Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.[16]
Lopez also wrote critically about technology industry trends, including a piece examining the demise of the "metaverse" concept as a corporate strategy, which was distributed by MSN.[17]
Broadcasting and Teaching
Throughout her career, Lopez was a regular contributor to American Public Media's Marketplace program and made frequent appearances as a commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. Her podcast appearances were also extensive, spanning numerous business and economics programs.[18]
Lopez served as an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, her alma mater, where she taught courses related to financial and business journalism.[2]
Transition to Finance
In January 2025, Talking Biz News reported that Lopez had left Business Insider to join ValueWorks, a hedge fund, as director of strategy and communications. The move marked a significant career transition from journalism to the financial industry.[19]
Recognition
Lopez received several industry honors during her journalism career. In 2017, she was named a "Rising Star" in the Folio: Top Women in Media awards, a recognition program honoring women who have made significant contributions to the media industry.[20]
In 2020, the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) awarded Lopez its Excellence in Financial Journalism Award for her opinion piece on the Huawei indictment and its implications for U.S.–China relations. The NYSSCPA award recognized her ability to make complex financial and geopolitical topics accessible to a broad audience.[16]
In June 2023, Lopez received the New York Press Club Award for Journalism for her article "The Stock Market Had It Coming," which analyzed conditions in the financial markets. The award was part of the New York Press Club's annual journalism honors.[21]
The December 2022 suspension of Lopez's Twitter account, along with those of several other journalists, became a widely covered media event that brought her work to broader public attention. Coverage in The New York Times, The Daily Beast, and other outlets highlighted her long history of investigative reporting on Tesla and Musk.[11][12]
Legacy
Lopez's career at Business Insider coincided with a period of significant transformation in both financial journalism and the technology industry. Her sustained, critical coverage of Tesla and Elon Musk placed her at the center of debates about corporate accountability, the role of journalism in scrutinizing powerful executives, and the tensions between social media platform owners and the press.
The 2018 incidents in which Musk publicly attacked Lopez on social media prompted broader discussions about the treatment of journalists by the subjects of their reporting. Slate's coverage of the episode framed it as a cautionary example of how corporate leaders could use their public platforms to undermine critical journalism.[9] The December 2022 Twitter suspensions further amplified these concerns, as Musk's ownership of the platform gave him direct control over the ability of journalists to use it — a development that drew condemnation from press freedom advocates and media organizations.
Lopez's transition from journalism to a role at a hedge fund in early 2025 reflected a pattern seen among experienced financial journalists who move into the industries they once covered, bringing with them deep knowledge of corporate finance, communications strategy, and media relations.[19]
Her body of work at Business Insider, spanning more than a decade, contributed to the outlet's reputation for aggressive financial reporting and opinion journalism. Her willingness to maintain critical coverage of major corporations and executives, despite public confrontations, became a defining aspect of her professional identity and a subject of media commentary in its own right.[4]
