Karen Huger (née Wooden; born May 3, 1963) is an American television personality and entrepreneur who has appeared as a main cast member on the Bravo reality television series The Real Housewives of Potomac since its premiere in 2016. Known by fans and castmates as the "Grand Dame" of Potomac, Huger has been a central figure throughout the show's run, which has chronicled the social lives, interpersonal conflicts, and personal challenges of affluent women in the Potomac, Maryland area. Beyond her television career, Huger launched a fragrance and lifestyle brand called La'Dame. Her personal life became the subject of intense public scrutiny in 2024 and 2025 following a driving under the influence (DUI) arrest, subsequent conviction, and incarceration. Her return to the series in its tenth season, during which she discussed her experiences with addiction and imprisonment, generated significant media coverage. Originally from Surry County, Virginia, Huger has become one of the most recognizable figures in the Real Housewives franchise.
Early Life
Karen Wooden was born on May 3, 1963, in Spring Grove, a small community in Surry County, Virginia.[1] She grew up in a close-knit family in the rural Virginia community. Huger has spoken publicly about her deep ties to Surry County throughout her time on The Real Housewives of Potomac, and the area has been featured on the show. In 2022, Huger appeared in a tourism video promoting Surry County, which was filmed in part in the Potomac area, leading to questions from her castmates about the production's authenticity.[2]
Huger experienced significant personal loss in 2018 when her father died, coming just months after the death of her mother. The back-to-back losses were documented in part during the show's run and were widely reported in entertainment media.[3] Huger has described the passing of both parents as a defining emotional chapter of her life, and her grief and its effects on her personal relationships have been explored on multiple seasons of The Real Housewives of Potomac.
Career
The Real Housewives of Potomac
In 2015, Bravo announced the development of The Real Housewives of Potomac as a new addition to its long-running Real Housewives franchise. The series was among two new Real Housewives shows announced by the network that year.[4] Huger was cast as one of the original housewives and has appeared on every season since the show premiered in January 2016.[1]
The series focuses on the personal and social lives of women residing in and around the affluent Potomac, Maryland area. Throughout the show's run, Huger has been a prominent figure, known for her self-styled title of "Grand Dame," a reference to her role as a social leader and matriarch within the cast. Huger's interactions with other cast members, her family dynamics, and her business endeavors have been recurring storylines.
By the show's sixth season, Huger remained a fixture of the cast. Bravo confirmed the Season 6 cast, premiere date, and trailer in 2021, with Huger continuing in her role as a main housewife.[5]
A special titled The Real Housewives of Potomac: Karen's Grande Dame Reunion was produced, centering on Huger's return to Surry County, Virginia, where she reconnected with her roots. The special was previewed by several media outlets and featured Huger exploring family history and personal milestones.[6][7][8]
Season 10 and Return After Incarceration
Season 10 of The Real Housewives of Potomac marked a particularly significant chapter for Huger. Following her release from prison in September 2025, Bravo documented her return and arranged a sit-down interview with franchise host Andy Cohen. In a teaser for the season, Huger stated it was "time to talk about my addiction," signaling a new level of public openness about her personal struggles.[9]
The season finale, which aired in early 2026, featured Huger sharing candid details about her daily life in jail. She described the experience by saying, "I have been through hell and back," and spoke about the emotional and psychological toll of her incarceration.[10] In the same episode, Huger had an emotional reunion with her family following her release, telling cameras that she had found a "purpose" while in prison.[11]
During the Season 10 reunion, Huger addressed fellow cast member Wendy Osefo, who was facing her own legal issues at the time. Huger urged Osefo to take her court case seriously, stating that she was "begging" her to do so, drawing on her own experience with the criminal justice system.[12][13]
A behind-the-scenes perspective on the production of Season 10 was provided by a NBCUniversal vice president of unscripted production in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The executive discussed the challenges of producing around Huger's return from jail and Wendy Osefo's fraud arrest, describing the season's legal storylines as unprecedented within the franchise.[14]
La'Dame Fragrance and Business Ventures
Outside of reality television, Huger has pursued entrepreneurial ventures. She created La'Dame, a fragrance and lifestyle brand. The product line includes perfumes and candles, such as the La'Dame Bohemian Fire 3-Wick Candle.[15] The development and promotion of the La'Dame fragrance line has been featured as a storyline on The Real Housewives of Potomac. Screen Rant reported on everything known about Huger's La'Dame perfume, documenting the brand's journey as a business venture tied to her television persona.[16] Huger also expanded the brand to include a candle company, which was similarly covered in entertainment media.[17] Additionally, Bravo featured updates on the fragrance brand on its platform, with Huger sharing progress on the line.[18]
Personal Life
Family
Karen Huger resides in the Potomac, Maryland area. She has been married to Raymond Huger, a technology executive. Before her marriage to Raymond Huger, she was previously married to Edmund E. Carter; the marriage ended in divorce.
Huger's relationships with her family members, including her husband and their children, have been featured extensively on The Real Housewives of Potomac. The deaths of both her parents in 2018—her mother followed by her father just months later—were particularly impactful events that were documented on the series and in media coverage.[19]
DUI Arrest, Conviction, and Incarceration
In 2024, Huger was involved in a car crash that led to her arrest on charges of driving under the influence (DUI). She was reportedly driving a Maserati at the time of the collision. In December 2024, Huger was found guilty of DUI charges in Montgomery County, Maryland.[20] The verdict raised immediate questions about her future on The Real Housewives of Potomac.[21]
Huger was subsequently sentenced to two years in prison, with one year suspended, meaning she served a portion of the sentence. She was incarcerated at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Maryland.[22][23]
Following her release in September 2025, Huger spoke publicly about her experiences. In an interview with Sherri Shepherd in February 2026, she discussed her addiction, her DUI arrest, and her time in jail, stating that the experience could not "keep the Grand Dame down" and that she "healed myself."[24]
Sobriety
In the wake of her conviction and incarceration, Huger has spoken publicly about her sobriety journey. During the Season 10 reunion of The Real Housewives of Potomac, she reflected on her accountability and recovery, addressing both past DUI incidents and the criticism she faced from fellow cast members and the public. EBONY magazine reported on Huger's discussion of sobriety, scrutiny, and reunion pressure, noting the support she received from some of her castmates during the process.[25]
In her sit-down interview with Andy Cohen for Season 10, Huger explicitly stated it was "time to talk about my addiction," making her substance abuse struggles a primary subject of her on-screen narrative for the first time.[9] She also described finding a sense of purpose during her time in prison, suggesting that the experience led to a period of self-reflection and personal growth.[11]
Recognition
Throughout her tenure on The Real Housewives of Potomac, Karen Huger has been one of the most prominently featured and discussed cast members in the franchise. Her self-given title of "Grand Dame" has become a well-known element of Real Housewives culture, and the special Karen's Grande Dame Reunion was produced as a standalone event centering on her life and background.[26]
Huger's story has been the subject of coverage in major entertainment and news publications, including People, the Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter, EBONY, and Yahoo Entertainment, among others. Her DUI conviction, incarceration, and subsequent return to television drew attention not only from entertainment media but also from local news outlets in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including WJLA and DC News Now.[22][14][24]
Her Season 10 storyline, in which she publicly discussed addiction and recovery following her release from jail, was noted as one of the most significant personal narratives in the history of the Real Housewives franchise. The Hollywood Reporter reported that a Bravo executive described the season's legal storylines, including Huger's, as among the most complex the network had produced for any Real Housewives series.[14]
