Joachim Fainberg is a machine learning researcher and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of The Forecasting Company, a business-to-business software company that develops foundation models for time series forecasting. The company was part of Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch.[1]

Career

Fainberg holds a Bachelor of Music in Music & Sound Recording (Tonmeister) from the University of Surrey's Institute of Sound Recording, and both a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral research at the Centre for Speech Technology Research (CSTR) focused on automatic speech recognition, supervised by Steve Renals and Peter Bell. During his time at Edinburgh, he contributed to the Amazon Alexa Prize as part of Team Edina, for which he collected the Self-dialogue Corpus, and served as a teaching assistant for courses in automatic speech recognition and machine learning.

Before founding The Forecasting Company, Fainberg held several industry positions. He worked as a machine learning scientist (Vice President) within the Machine Learning Center of Excellence at J.P. Morgan Chase. He subsequently served as an AI/ML tech lead at Consigli, a Norwegian company, and as a senior algorithm engineer at Vind AI. Earlier in his career, he completed internships at Bloomberg and at Sonos in the Advanced Technology team. He also worked as a theatre consultant for Charcoalblue, advising on audiovisual and acoustics design, and as a software tester and mechanic for the stage technology company Visual act.

Fainberg co-founded The Forecasting Company alongside Geoffrey Negiar, who serves as CEO. The company builds planning systems powered by in-house foundation models designed specifically for time series data. Its flagship model, designated t_0, is intended to deliver predictions across arbitrary time series inputs. The company offers both an API and a browser-based platform called Retrocast, which allows users to upload time series data, generate forecasts, and compare the performance of t_0 against open-source alternatives. The Forecasting Company operates in the artificial intelligence, enterprise software, and supply chain sectors.[2]

In September 2024, The Forecasting Company raised a $500,000 seed round with participation from Y Combinator. The company is based in Paris, France, where Fainberg resides.
