James Sucec is an American mechanical engineer and academic who has spent his career at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, where he has conducted research in the field of heat transfer, with particular attention to turbulent boundary layers and conjugate convection problems.[1] Over several decades, his work has contributed to the development of integral methods used to analyze fluid flow and heat transfer over rough and smooth surfaces.[2]

Education

Sucec received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1962 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the same institution in 1963.[3] He is a registered Professional Engineer and is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine.[3]

Career

Sucec has been affiliated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine for the bulk of his academic career.[4] In 1978, he was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for a project titled "A Higher Level Quasi-Steady Approach to Transient Forced Convection Conjugate Problems," which was funded at $46,343 and administered through the University of Maine.[5] This early funded research established a foundation for his subsequent decades-long inquiry into conjugate heat transfer problems, in which the thermal interaction between a solid boundary and an adjacent fluid flow is analyzed as a coupled system rather than treated with simplified boundary conditions.

Throughout his career, Sucec has published extensively on topics in convective heat transfer, turbulent boundary layer theory, and integral solution methods, publishing at least 42 peer reviewed papers over the course of his research career, according to citation indexing services.[6] His body of work spans several decades, beginning with foundational studies in the late 1970s and continuing with publications as recent as 2020, indicating sustained engagement with problems in fluid mechanics and thermal sciences throughout an extended academic career at the University of Maine.[7]

Research

Sucec's research has concentrated primarily on two related areas within the broader field of heat transfer: the behavior of turbulent boundary layers, particularly over rough surfaces, and the analysis of conjugate and transient convection heat transfer problems in duct flows.

Turbulent boundary layer heat transfer

A substantial portion of Sucec's published work addresses integral methods for calculating turbulent boundary layer behavior, including skin friction and heat transfer coefficients, under various flow conditions. His 2020 paper, "Rough Surface Turbulent Boundary Layer Heat Transfer Using Generalized Reynolds Analogies," examined heat transfer characteristics over rough surfaces by extending Reynolds analogy concepts, which relate momentum and heat transfer in turbulent flows.[8] This paper has been cited three times in subsequent literature.[9]

Related work published in 2017, titled "A Relatively Simple Integral Method for Turbulent Flow Over Rough Surfaces," continued his focus on developing computationally efficient methods for predicting flow behavior over surfaces with roughness elements, a topic with applications in aerodynamics and industrial fluid systems.[10]

In 2014, Sucec published "An Integral Solution for Skin Friction in Turbulent Flow Over Aerodynamically Rough Surfaces With an Arbitrary Pressure Gradient," which addressed the more complex scenario of rough surface flows subjected to varying pressure gradients, a condition relevant to many practical aerodynamic and industrial applications. This paper has accumulated six citations.[11]

His 2009 paper, "An Integral Solution for Heat Transfer in Accelerating Turbulent Boundary Layers," examined heat transfer in boundary layers subjected to flow acceleration, extending integral method approaches to non-equilibrium flow conditions. This work has been cited seven times.[12]

Earlier contributions to this research area include "Modern Integral Method Calculation of Turbulent Boundary Layers" (2006) and "Calculation of Turbulent Boundary Layers Using Equilibrium Thermal Wakes" (2005), both of which further developed and refined integral calculation techniques for predicting boundary layer behavior in turbulent flow regimes.[13][14] The 1999 paper "Prediction of Heat Transfer in Turbulent, Transpired Boundary Layers" extended these methods to boundary layers with transpiration, or fluid injection through a porous surface, a topic with relevance to cooling systems in high temperature applications.[15]

Conjugate and transient convection problems

Sucec's other major research thread concerns conjugate heat transfer, in which the solid boundary and fluid flow are analyzed as a thermally coupled system. His most highly cited paper, "Unsteady forced convection with sinusoidal duct wall generation: the conjugate heat transfer problem," published in 2002, examined transient heat transfer in duct flows where heat generation at the duct wall varies sinusoidally over time. This paper has accumulated 29 citations, making it the most cited work identified in his publication record.[16]

A companion paper from the same year, "Unsteady, Conjugated Duct Heat Transfer Solution with Wall Heating," further explored transient conjugate heat transfer scenarios involving wall heating conditions in duct flows, and has been cited six times.[17] An earlier paper on this theme, "Transient conjugate convection heat transfer in duct with wall generation," was published in 1999.[18]

His 2002 paper on unsteady forced convection with sinusoidal duct wall generation remains his most cited individual contribution, reflecting sustained interest in that particular conjugate heat transfer problem within the fluid mechanics and thermal sciences research community.[19]
