Another significant area of Bagrow's scholarship concerns computational linguistics and the statistical properties of language. His research on "Zipf's law holds for phrases, not words," archived through ScholarWorks at UVM in 2021, revisited the classical linguistic principle known as Zipf's law, which describes the frequency distribution of words in natural language. Bagrow's analysis suggested that this statistical regularity applies more accurately to multi-word phrases than to individual words, a finding with implications for computational models of language processing.[15]
Bagrow's work also extends into the domain of engineering systems and machine learning methodology. His 2021 preprint on arXiv, "A Review & Framework for Modeling Complex Engineered System Development Processes," offers a survey and conceptual framework for understanding how complex engineered systems are developed, drawing on principles from systems engineering and complex systems theory.[16] More recently, in 2023, Bagrow contributed to research on machine learning benchmarking, co-authoring "The Metric is the Message: Benchmarking Challenges for Neural Symbolic Regression," presented at the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (ECML/PKDD). This paper critically examines the metrics used to evaluate neural symbolic regression models, a class of machine learning techniques that aim to discover mathematical expressions from data, and has been cited 4 times since its publication.[17]
