Gary Carver is a physicist specializing in optics who serves as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Physics at the University of Vermont.[1] His work spans thin-film coatings, fiber-optic sensing, and photoluminescence imaging.[2]

Education

Carver received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, studying there from 1970 to 1974.[3] He went on to earn a PhD in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona, completing his doctoral studies between 1974 and 1980.[4]

Career

Carver spent 24 years at Bell Labs, part of Alcatel-Lucent, from 1980 to 2004, working as a Member of Technical Staff and later Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in optical test.[5] From 2004 to 2008 he was a Principal Scientist in research and development at Princeton Lightwave in the United States.[6] He then served as Director of Research and Development at Omega Optical, Inc. from 2008 to 2022.[7] Since 2022, Carver has held the position of Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Physics at the University of Vermont.[8]

Research

According to Semantic Scholar, Carver has authored or co-authored 66 papers with a combined total of 426 citations and an h-index of 12.[9] His most cited work, "In-fiber spectrometer using tilted fiber gratings," published in 2003 in IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, has been cited 53 times.[10] Earlier in his career, Carver contributed several studies on chemically vapor deposited molybdenum thin films for photothermal solar converters, including work on their infrared reflectance and solar absorptance properties.[11] He also published on photoluminescence imaging techniques for semiconductor materials, including porous silicon and semi-insulating GaAs and InP.[12]

Carver's research has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. NSF records show a 1989 award of $17,347 for a project titled "Computerization of Surveying Methods and Data Interpretation for Geology Courses with Field Laboratories," administered through Cal Poly Humboldt Sponsored Programs Foundation.[13] NIH records document three funded projects titled "Rapid In-vivo Cancer Detection via Multispectral Confocal Cellular Imaging," awarded through Omega Optical Inc., totaling $849,900 across amounts of $323,839, $426,094, and $99,967.[14]
