Florian Wegener is a German physician and entrepreneur who is the co-founder and chief executive officer of ZAGENO, a life-sciences e-commerce marketplace for laboratory and research supplies.[1][2] Trained as a cardiologist before moving into business, he founded the company in 2015 with the goal of consolidating the fragmented market for scientific research products into a single procurement platform.[3]
Education
Wegener grew up in Freiburg, Germany.[3] He studied medicine at the Universities of Freiburg and Frankfurt, with additional study in Toronto and at New York University, earning his medical degree in 2004 and a doctorate in medicine (Dr. med., magna cum laude) in 2005.[2][3] He later completed an MBA at IE Business School in Madrid, focusing on entrepreneurship, corporate finance and strategy.[2][3]
Career
Medicine
Wegener is a board-certified physician and practiced as a cardiologist at University Hospital Frankfurt, where his work included invasive electrophysiological studies and heart catheterization.[2][3]
Consulting and industry
From 2007 to 2013 he worked as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group in Munich, advising on biopharmaceutical and medical-technology projects.[2][3] He subsequently served as Vice President and Global Head of eCommerce at Qiagen, where he led the company's digital-commerce strategy.[2][3]
ZAGENO
Wegener co-founded ZAGENO in 2015, with operations established in Boston and Berlin, alongside co-founder David Pumberger.[1][4] The company operates an online marketplace that aggregates laboratory and life-science products from thousands of suppliers to streamline scientific procurement for biotechnology and pharmaceutical organizations.[1] He has spoken about the company's approach to laboratory supply and procurement at industry events, including the Lab of the Future congress.[5] Wegener has discussed his experience building the company in interviews and podcast appearances, including the Biotech2050 podcast.[6]
