Emily Yuan is an American entrepreneur and the co-founder and chief operating officer (COO) of Corgi Insurance, an AI-driven financial infrastructure company that operates as a full-stack insurance carrier for startups. Corgi Insurance was part of Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch.[1]
Career
Prior to founding Corgi Insurance, Yuan co-founded Picnic, a social media application targeting Generation Z users. Picnic was designed around interest-based communities called "circles," where users could share content related to shared interests such as television shows, music, and films. Yuan and her co-founder Nico Laqua developed the app after Laqua initially built a prototype for online communities that Yuan helped test at Stanford University for user feedback. The two subsequently shaped the project into a full product.[2]
Yuan later co-founded Corgi Insurance with Laqua. The company is based in San Francisco and operates at the intersection of financial technology, insurance, and artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional insurance brokers, Corgi functions as a direct insurance carrier, underwriting and issuing policies without intermediaries. The company's model is designed to reduce friction in the insurance process by providing instant quotes and modular coverage options tailored to the specific operations of startup companies. By cutting out middlemen, Corgi aims to price risk more efficiently and customize coverage for early-stage and growth-stage technology companies.[3]
The company's client base includes several technology startups, with its website listing companies such as Artisan, AthenaHQ, Bland, Intryc, Origami, PromptingCo, and Series among its customers.[3]
In addition to her role at Corgi Insurance, Yuan has served as a board member at Basket Entertainment.[1]
