Early life and education

Lossner is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. While at Harvard, he co-founded MakeHarvard, a student-led initiative. He also conducted research on the application of machine learning to the control of medical exoskeletons.

Career

Before founding Hazel, Lossner held internships in data engineering at Capital One and in aerospace engineering at Hedron. He subsequently spent four years at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he led work in strategy and procurement consulting.

In 2024, Lossner co-founded Hazel alongside August Chen. The company is headquartered in New York City and builds AI-powered procurement software for U.S. state, local, and federal government agencies. Hazel automates multiple stages of the procurement process, including requirements generation, market research, solicitation drafting, and proposal evaluation. The platform is designed to help agencies draft request-for-proposal (RFP), request-for-quotation (RFQ), and request-for-bid (RFB) documents using each agency's existing templates, policies, and historical awards.[2]

According to the company's website, Hazel supports over $2.5 billion in procurement activity and serves more than ten clients across levels of government, including the City of Dallas, the City of Atlanta, PhilaPort, and the United States Air Force. The company's Y Combinator group partner was Michael Seibel.

Hazel was among the AI-focused startups in Y Combinator's Winter 2024 cohort, which included a notable concentration of companies applying artificial intelligence to various industries.
