Eileen Marie Davidson (born June 15, 1959) is an American actress, author, television personality, and former model whose career in daytime television has spanned more than four decades. She is best known for her portrayal of multiple characters — most notably Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks — on NBC's Days of Our Lives, and for her long-running role as Ashley Abbott on CBS's The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. Davidson won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series twice, first in 2014 for Days of Our Lives and again in 2018 for The Young and the Restless. Beyond the soap opera genre, she appeared in the horror film The House on Sorority Row (1983), starred in the CBS crime series Broken Badges (1990–91), authored a series of mystery novels, and was a full-time cast member of Bravo's The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills from 2014 to 2017. Her ability to portray a wide range of characters, including male alter egos on Days of Our Lives, has earned her recognition as one of the most versatile performers in the history of American daytime television.[1]

Early Life

Eileen Marie Davidson was born on June 15, 1959, in Artesia, California, a small city in the southeastern portion of Los Angeles County.[2] Details regarding her parents and upbringing remain largely private. Growing up in Southern California, Davidson was exposed to the entertainment industry from a relatively young age and began working as a model before transitioning to acting. Her early modeling career provided a foundation for her entry into Hollywood, where she would go on to establish herself in both film and television.

Career

Early Film and Television Work

Davidson's first significant screen role came in the slasher horror film The House on Sorority Row (1983), in which she played one of the lead characters. The film, directed by Mark Rosman, became a cult classic within the horror genre and introduced Davidson to a wider audience. While the film was modestly received upon its initial release, it has maintained a following among horror enthusiasts in the decades since.

Following her film debut, Davidson transitioned primarily to television work. She landed the role of Kelly Capwell on the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara, becoming the final actress to portray the character during the show's run. This role marked Davidson's entrance into the daytime soap opera world, a genre that would define the majority of her professional career.

In 1990, Davidson moved to primetime television with a leading role in the CBS crime series Broken Badges, which aired during the 1990–91 season. The show was short-lived but demonstrated Davidson's range beyond the soap opera format.

The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful

Davidson's portrayal of Ashley Abbott on CBS's The Young and the Restless became one of the defining roles of her career. As Ashley Abbott, a cosmetics chemist and member of the prominent Abbott family in the fictional city of Genoa City, Davidson became a fixture of daytime television for multiple decades. The character was central to many of the show's most significant storylines, involving complex family dynamics, romantic entanglements, and corporate intrigue at the fictional Jabot Cosmetics company.

Davidson also reprised the role of Ashley Abbott on CBS's companion soap The Bold and the Beautiful, making her one of a select group of actors to appear as the same character across both programs. This crossover presence reinforced the interconnected universe of the two CBS soap operas and expanded Davidson's visibility among daytime audiences.

In 2014, Davidson signed a contract to return to The Young and the Restless in the role of Ashley Abbott, further solidifying her long association with the character.[3] She continued to appear on the show in subsequent years, with the character becoming one of the longest-running roles on the program.

By October 2025, Davidson provided an update on Ashley Abbott's status, noting that the character had last appeared at a storyline event earlier that year.[4]

Days of Our Lives

Davidson's work on NBC's Days of Our Lives further elevated her profile in the soap opera world. She is most closely associated with the role of Kristen DiMera, a complex and frequently villainous character who became one of the most memorable figures in the show's long history. Kristen DiMera, a member of the powerful DiMera family in the fictional city of Salem, was involved in numerous high-stakes storylines that showcased Davidson's dramatic range.

In addition to Kristen DiMera, Davidson portrayed multiple other characters on Days of Our Lives, most prominently Susan Banks, a quirky and eccentric character whose personality stood in stark contrast to the scheming Kristen. Davidson's ability to differentiate between these characters — sometimes appearing in scenes opposite herself through the use of split-screen and body double techniques — was a significant factor in her critical acclaim. Over the course of her tenure on the show, Davidson played several additional roles, demonstrating a willingness to take on characters of varying temperaments, backgrounds, and even genders. A 2025 feature highlighted Davidson's portrayal of a male alter ego, underscoring the breadth of her character work on the series.[5]

Davidson departed and returned to Days of Our Lives on multiple occasions. In 2012, she rejoined the cast as both Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks.[6] Her return was covered by multiple entertainment outlets, reflecting the anticipation among fans for Kristen DiMera's reappearance in Salem.[7][8]

In 2014, Davidson was set for another return to Days of Our Lives.[9] A subsequent return was also reported in 2017.[10]

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills

In 2014, Davidson joined the cast of Bravo's reality television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills as a full-time housewife, beginning with the show's fifth season.[11] Her addition to the cast brought a different dynamic to the show, as Davidson was already a well-established figure in the entertainment industry through her decades-long soap opera career.

Davidson appeared as a full-time cast member on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills through 2017, participating in three seasons of the program. During her time on the show, she was known for her relatively measured demeanor compared to some of her co-stars, and she developed on-screen relationships with other cast members including Kyle Richards. A 2025 Bravo feature revisited Davidson's favorite moments from 2016, including her interactions with Richards and Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen.[12]

Davidson's reality television career gave her exposure to audiences who may not have been familiar with her soap opera work, broadening her public profile considerably. The show also provided a platform for Davidson to discuss her personal life and professional endeavors with a new generation of viewers.

Writing Career

In addition to her acting career, Davidson pursued a parallel career as an author. She wrote a number of mystery novels during the 2000s, publishing through a dedicated book imprint.[13] Her novels drew on her knowledge of the entertainment industry and the soap opera world, blending fictional narratives with the behind-the-scenes atmosphere of daytime television. The books were marketed to her existing fan base while also attracting readers of the mystery genre more broadly.

Recent Work

Davidson has continued to be active in the entertainment industry in recent years. In 2025, she received a nomination at the Daytime Emmy Awards, continuing her long association with the ceremony.[14] She has also been involved in various appearances and projects related to her soap opera roles.

In September 2025, Davidson drew public attention and controversy after making comments on social media regarding the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Her remarks generated significant backlash, and Davidson subsequently responded to the criticism.[15][16]

Personal Life

Davidson has kept much of her personal life relatively private despite her decades in the public eye. She has been open about certain aspects of her life during her appearances on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, where personal matters were frequently discussed as part of the show's format.[17]

Davidson resides in the greater Los Angeles area, where she has been based throughout her career in the entertainment industry.

Recognition

Daytime Emmy Awards

Davidson's most significant professional recognition has come through the Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2003, she was among the nominees announced for the ceremony, reflecting her sustained prominence in the daytime television landscape.[18]

In 2014, Davidson was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Kristen DiMera on Days of Our Lives.[19] She won the award at the 41st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony, becoming the second actress to win the Lead Actress category for her work on Days of Our Lives.[20][21][22]

In 2018, Davidson won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series a second time, on this occasion for her portrayal of Ashley Abbott on The Young and the Restless. This second win made her one of a relatively small number of actresses to have won the award for performances on two different soap operas.

Davidson received another Daytime Emmy nomination in 2025, further extending her record of recognition by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.[23]

Other Industry Recognition

Throughout her career, Davidson has also been nominated for and received various other industry recognitions from soap opera publications and fan organizations. ABC led Daytime Emmy nominations in 1998, a year in which the daytime television landscape was competitive across all networks.[24]

Legacy

Eileen Davidson's career represents one of the more enduring and versatile bodies of work in the history of American daytime television. Her ability to simultaneously portray multiple distinct characters on Days of Our Lives — from the scheming Kristen DiMera to the eccentric Susan Banks to a male alter ego — set a standard for character work in the soap opera genre. The technical and performative demands of playing opposite oneself in split-screen sequences required a level of precision and differentiation that earned Davidson sustained critical attention throughout her career.

Her dual tenure on both Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless, and her Emmy wins for work on each show, placed her in a rare category of performers who have achieved the highest level of recognition on competing programs across different networks. This cross-network success is unusual in the soap opera industry, where performers are more typically associated with a single show or network throughout their careers.

Davidson's transition to reality television through The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2014 reflected a broader trend of established entertainment figures joining the reality television format, and her presence on the show brought a degree of industry credibility to the cast. Her writing career further demonstrated a willingness to expand beyond the boundaries of a single professional identity.

As of 2025, Davidson continues to be active in the entertainment industry, receiving award nominations and maintaining her connection to the soap opera roles that defined her career. Her body of work across film, daytime television, primetime television, reality television, and publishing constitutes one of the more diverse careers among American soap opera performers of her generation.
