David Dobkin (born c. 1969) is an American film director, producer, and commercial director whose career spans feature films, music videos, and advertising. He first gained attention in the late 1990s with the dark comedy thriller Clay Pigeons (1998), and went on to direct studio comedies and action films including Shanghai Knights (2003) and The Judge (2014). Dobkin is most closely associated with Wedding Crashers (2005), the comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson that became one of the highest-grossing comedies of that year and established him as a prominent comedy director in Hollywood.[1] In addition to his feature film work, Dobkin has maintained an active career in commercial directing, working with RSA Films on campaigns for brands such as Comcast's Xfinity.[2]

Career

Early Film Work

Dobkin's feature directorial debut came with Clay Pigeons (1998), a dark comedy thriller set in a small Montana town. The film starred Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn, with Vaughn playing a charismatic serial killer. Clay Pigeons received mixed to positive reviews and, while not a major commercial success, demonstrated Dobkin's ability to blend comedy with darker genre elements. The film introduced Dobkin to Hollywood and began his working relationship with Vaughn, a collaboration that would prove significant in the years to come.[1]

Shanghai Knights

Following Clay Pigeons, Dobkin was hired to direct Shanghai Knights (2003), the sequel to the 2000 action comedy Shanghai Noon. The film starred Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson and was set in Victorian-era London. Shanghai Knights performed solidly at the box office and represented Dobkin's first experience directing a large-scale studio production with significant action set pieces. The project also marked Dobkin's first collaboration with Wilson, another working relationship that would become central to his career.[1]

Wedding Crashers

Dobkin's breakthrough came with Wedding Crashers (2005), a comedy about two divorce mediators, played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, who crash weddings to meet women. The film also featured Christopher Walken, Rachel McAdams, and Isla Fisher in supporting roles. Released during the summer of 2005, Wedding Crashers became a surprise box office hit, earning substantial commercial returns and cementing Dobkin's reputation as a director of mainstream comedy.[1]

Rotten Tomatoes described Wedding Crashers as "the surprise comedy hit of the summer of 2005," noting that it established Dobkin "as a hot director in the genre."[1] The film's success was attributed in part to the chemistry between Vaughn and Wilson, both of whom Dobkin had previously directed individually — Vaughn in Clay Pigeons and Wilson in Shanghai Knights. The reunion of all three on Wedding Crashers proved commercially potent, and the film's cultural footprint extended well beyond its theatrical run, becoming a staple of home video and cable television in subsequent years.

The success of Wedding Crashers also created a lasting professional association between Dobkin, Vaughn, and Wilson that has continued to be revisited in various forms over the two decades since the film's release.

Fred Claus and Later Feature Films

After Wedding Crashers, Dobkin directed Fred Claus (2007), a Christmas comedy starring Vince Vaughn as the older brother of Santa Claus. The film received generally negative reviews from critics but performed moderately at the box office during the holiday season.

Dobkin later directed The Change-Up (2011), a body-swap comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, which received mixed critical reception. He then shifted to more dramatic territory with The Judge (2014), a legal drama starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. The Judge represented a departure from the broad comedies that had defined much of Dobkin's filmography, though it still incorporated comedic elements. The film received mixed reviews but earned Duvall a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.[1]

Dobkin also directed Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020), a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams that was released on Netflix. The film, set against the backdrop of the Eurovision Song Contest, received mixed to positive reviews and found a significant audience on the streaming platform.

Commercial Directing

In addition to his feature film work, Dobkin has maintained an active and prominent career as a commercial director. He has been represented by RSA Films, the production company founded by Ridley Scott and Tony Scott, for his advertising work.[2]

In September 2025, Dobkin reunited with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn for a major advertising campaign for Comcast's Xfinity brand. The campaign, produced through RSA Films and developed by the agency Preacher, deliberately evoked the Wedding Crashers partnership that had made all three famous two decades earlier. SHOOTonline reported that Wilson, Vaughn, and Dobkin "famously teamed on the comedy box office hit Wedding Crashers" and were now reuniting for the Xfinity campaign.[2]

The collaboration continued in October 2025, when Dobkin directed a national Xfinity advertisement for the kickoff of the NBA season. The spot again starred Vaughn and Wilson, this time alongside basketball player Reggie Miller.[3] The continued pairing of Dobkin with Vaughn and Wilson in high-profile commercial work illustrates the enduring brand recognition associated with the Wedding Crashers team.

Dobkin's commercial work has spanned numerous brands and formats over the course of his career. The commercial side of his career has provided both a steady creative outlet between feature films and an opportunity to work in shorter, high-production-value formats.

Filmography

Dobkin's notable directing credits include:

  • Clay Pigeons (1998)
  • Shanghai Knights (2003)
  • Wedding Crashers (2005)
  • Fred Claus (2007)
  • The Change-Up (2011)
  • The Judge (2014)
  • Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)

In addition to directing, Dobkin has served as a producer on several projects. His filmography reflects a range that extends from dark comedy to broad studio comedies to courtroom drama, though he is most frequently associated with the comedy genre.[1][4]

Recognition

Wedding Crashers remains Dobkin's most recognized work and is frequently cited as one of the defining comedies of the 2000s. The film's commercial success — it grossed over $285 million worldwide on a reported budget of $40 million — established Dobkin as a bankable comedy director during a period when R-rated comedies were experiencing a resurgence in Hollywood.[1]

Dobkin's work on The Judge earned indirect recognition through Robert Duvall's Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, reflecting the director's ability to attract and guide major acting talent in dramatic material.

His commercial directing work has also earned recognition within the advertising industry, with his Xfinity campaigns with Vaughn and Wilson receiving significant coverage in trade publications such as SHOOTonline.[2][3]

Legacy

Dobkin's career is most closely defined by Wedding Crashers and the creative partnerships it forged. The film's cultural impact extended beyond its box office performance, entering the popular lexicon and spawning years of speculation and discussion about a potential sequel. The enduring appeal of the Dobkin-Vaughn-Wilson combination has been evidenced by the commercial world's continued interest in reuniting the trio, as demonstrated by the 2025 Xfinity campaigns that explicitly traded on the Wedding Crashers association.[2][3]

Dobkin's filmography, while varied in genre and critical reception, reflects a consistent ability to work with major Hollywood talent. Over the course of his career, he has directed performers including Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Jackie Chan, Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Christopher Walken. This track record with A-list actors has been a defining characteristic of his career as a studio director.

His dual career in features and commercials also reflects a broader trend in the film industry, where directors increasingly move between theatrical, streaming, and advertising work. Dobkin's affiliation with RSA Films for his commercial projects has placed him within a roster of directors associated with high-end advertising production.[2]
