David Robert Joseph Beckham, born 2 May 1975 in Leytonstone, London, is an English former professional footballer who became one of the most recognised athletes in the world during a career spanning more than two decades. Primarily deployed as a right midfielder, Beckham earned distinction for his precise crossing, long-range passing, and exceptional ability with free kicks and other set pieces. Over the course of his professional career, he won 19 major trophies and became the only English player to win league titles in four countries: England, Spain, the United States, and France. His club career took him from Manchester United, where he was a central figure in the dominant side of the 1990s, to Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain before his retirement in May 2013. For the England national team, Beckham earned 115 caps and served as captain for six years, representing his country at three FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships. Off the pitch, Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and is the president and co-owner of Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF. He is married to Victoria Beckham, the fashion designer and former member of the Spice Girls, with whom he has four children.[1]

Early Life

David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on 2 May 1975 in Leytonstone, in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England. He grew up in a football-loving household and showed an early aptitude for the sport. As a youth, Beckham played for the local side Ridgeway Rovers, where his talent attracted attention from professional clubs. He subsequently joined the youth setup at Tottenham Hotspur, where he trained from 1987 to 1991.[2] During this period, he also spent time on loan at Brimsdown Rovers, a non-league club in north London, gaining early competitive experience.[3]

Despite his association with Tottenham's youth academy, Beckham's future lay elsewhere. In 1991, at the age of 16, he joined the Manchester United youth programme, entering one of the most storied football academies in English football history. At United's training ground, Beckham was part of a remarkable cohort of young players who would later become known collectively as "Fergie's Fledglings," a group nurtured under the direction of manager Alex Ferguson. This group included Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, and Gary Neville, all of whom would go on to feature prominently in Manchester United's first team during the 1990s. Beckham's time in the youth system honed his technical abilities, particularly his crossing and dead-ball skills, which would become hallmarks of his senior career.

Career

Manchester United (1992–2003)

Beckham made his first-team debut for Manchester United in 1992, at the age of 17, in a League Cup match. His early years at the club saw him develop gradually within the squad, and in the 1994–95 season he was sent on loan to Preston North End to gain first-team experience, making five appearances and scoring two goals for the Third Division club.[4]

The 1995–96 season proved to be Beckham's breakthrough at Manchester United. He established himself as a regular in the first team and played a key role as United won the Premier League title that season.[5] Beckham's performances earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award, recognition of his emergence as one of the most exciting young talents in English football.[6] He quickly became known for his exceptional ability to deliver precise crosses from the right flank and his proficiency from free kicks and corners.

Over the following seasons, Beckham became one of the most important players in the Manchester United squad. His tenure at Old Trafford coincided with one of the most successful periods in the club's history. He won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the FA Charity Shield twice. The pinnacle of his time at United came in the 1998–99 season, when the club achieved an unprecedented treble, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. Beckham's contribution to the Champions League triumph was significant; he provided the corner kick that led to Teddy Sheringham's equaliser and the subsequent late winner by Ole Gunnar Solskjær in the dramatic final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona. United also won the Intercontinental Cup that year.

In 1999, Beckham was the runner-up for the Ballon d'Or, and he was also twice runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year, in 1999 and 2001. In 2004, Pelé named Beckham in the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living footballers.

Beckham's later years at Manchester United were marked by increasing tensions with manager Alex Ferguson. A widely reported incident in February 2003 saw Ferguson kick a football boot in the dressing room, which struck Beckham above the eye, resulting in a visible cut.[7] The deterioration of the player-manager relationship contributed to Beckham's departure from the club. Over his time at Manchester United, Beckham made 265 first-team appearances and scored 62 goals.

Real Madrid (2003–2007)

In the summer of 2003, Beckham completed a transfer to Real Madrid, joining the Spanish club's collection of high-profile signings known as the "Galácticos," which included Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luís Figo, and Roberto Carlos.[8] At Real Madrid, Beckham wore the number 23 shirt and continued to serve as a set-piece specialist and creative force from the right side of midfield.

Beckham's four seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu were marked by both individual quality and periods of collective frustration, as the club struggled to match its domestic success of previous years during parts of his tenure. He made 116 appearances for the club and scored 13 goals.[9] Beckham won the La Liga title in the 2006–07 season, his final year at the club, contributing to Real Madrid's 30th league championship. The title was a fitting conclusion to his time in Spain, demonstrating his continued value as a top-level performer.

LA Galaxy and MLS Move (2007–2012)

In January 2007, it was announced that Beckham had signed a five-year contract with Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy, effective from July 2007.[10] The transfer was one of the most discussed in the history of American soccer and was seen as a pivotal moment for the sport's growth in the United States. Beckham's arrival brought unprecedented media attention to MLS and increased both attendance and commercial revenues for the league.

During his time at LA Galaxy, Beckham made 98 appearances and scored 18 goals. His tenure was interrupted by two loan spells with AC Milan in Serie A, in the first half of 2009 and early 2010, during which he made 18 and 11 appearances, respectively. The Milan loan spells allowed Beckham to maintain his fitness during the MLS off-season and to remain competitive at the highest European level. He became the first British footballer to play 100 UEFA Champions League matches during his time with Milan.

After returning from his second loan spell in Milan, Beckham helped guide LA Galaxy to successive MLS Cup victories in 2011 and 2012, adding two more major trophies to his collection and cementing his legacy in American soccer. His presence in MLS is credited with raising the profile of the league and encouraging future high-profile transfers to the competition.

Paris Saint-Germain and Retirement (2013)

In January 2013, Beckham signed with Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1, joining the French club for the final months of the season. He made 10 appearances for the club and donated his entire salary to charity. In May 2013, Beckham announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38, ending a 21-year career during which he made 523 club appearances, scoring 97 goals.

International Career

Beckham represented England at youth level before making his senior international debut on 1 September 1996, at the age of 21.[11] He had previously earned three caps for the England Under-18 team between 1992 and 1993 and nine caps for the England Under-21 team between 1994 and 1996.

Beckham's international career was eventful and sometimes controversial. At the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, he was sent off in the round of 16 match against Argentina for kicking out at Diego Simeone, a red card that contributed to England's elimination on penalties and made Beckham the subject of intense public criticism.[12] However, Beckham's response to the adversity was notable. He regained public favour through consistent club and international performances and was appointed England captain in 2000 by manager Peter Taylor, a role he held under subsequent managers Sven-Göran Eriksson and Steve McClaren.

As captain, Beckham led England at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where he scored a crucial penalty against Argentina in the group stage, and at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He also captained England at the UEFA European Championship in 2004 in Portugal. Over six years as captain, he earned 58 of his total caps while wearing the armband.

In total, Beckham won 115 caps and scored 17 goals for England, a record for an outfield player that stood until Wayne Rooney surpassed it in 2016. He was also selected for the UEFA European Championship in 2000, making appearances across five major international tournaments in total. His final international appearance came in 2009.

Post-Retirement: Inter Miami CF

Following his retirement as a player, Beckham exercised an option in his original MLS contract to purchase an expansion franchise. In 2014, Major League Soccer announced that Beckham and a group of investors would own a new Miami-based team. After several years of development, Inter Miami CF began playing in MLS in 2020. Beckham serves as president and co-owner of the club. He is also a co-owner of Salford City, an English football club in the lower leagues.

Personal Life

David Beckham married Victoria Beckham (née Adams), a former member of the Spice Girls and fashion designer, on 4 July 1999. The couple have four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.[13] The Beckham family has been a prominent fixture in British and international media since the late 1990s, with the couple frequently referred to by the portmanteau "Posh and Becks."

In early 2026, reports indicated public tensions within the Beckham family. The couple's eldest son, Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, reportedly expressed a desire not to reconcile with his family, a development that attracted significant media coverage.[14] Despite the public nature of the situation, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, a close family friend, stated publicly that the Beckhams are "good parents" and expressed confidence that time would help heal the family relationship.[15] David and Victoria Beckham posted public birthday messages to Brooklyn in March 2026.[16]

Beckham has resided in both London and the United States. In February 2026, it was reported that his Miami penthouse, located in a building designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, had sold for $25 million.[17]

Recognition

Beckham's contributions to football have been recognised through numerous awards and honours. At club level, he won 19 major trophies across his career, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the La Liga title, and two MLS Cups. In 1999, he was the runner-up for the Ballon d'Or and was twice runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year, in 1999 and 2001. In 2004, he was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world's 125 greatest living players.

Beckham was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021. He received the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1997 for his breakthrough season at Manchester United.

In 2003, Beckham was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to football. He was subsequently awarded a knighthood, becoming Sir David Beckham.

Beyond football, Beckham was ranked as the highest-paid player in the world in 2013, having earned over US$50 million in the previous twelve months. In a Channel 4 poll, he featured among the greatest sporting moments, reflecting his stature in British popular culture.[18]

Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005 and in 2015 launched "7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund," a charitable initiative dedicated to helping children around the world.

Legacy

David Beckham's influence on football extends beyond the pitch. As a player, his technical ability—particularly his capacity to deliver accurate crosses and free kicks from distance—set a standard for the position of right midfielder and for dead-ball specialists. He remains the only English player to have won league titles in four different countries, a distinction that underscores his adaptability and sustained quality over a long career.

Beckham's transfer to LA Galaxy in 2007 is credited with accelerating the growth of professional football in the United States. His arrival in Major League Soccer brought sustained international media attention to the league and helped pave the way for subsequent high-profile signings, including Thierry Henry, Robbie Keane, and later Lionel Messi, who would join Beckham's own Inter Miami CF. The "Beckham Rule," a provision within MLS roster regulations that allowed clubs to sign players outside the salary cap, was informally named after the impact of his transfer.

As co-owner and president of Inter Miami CF, Beckham has continued to shape American football from a leadership position. The club began playing in 2020, and Beckham's involvement in its founding and development represents a continuation of his role as a promoter and ambassador of the sport.

Beckham's cultural impact has also been significant. His status as one of the most recognisable sportsmen of his generation transcended football, making him a figure of note in fashion, advertising, and philanthropy. His long-standing work with UNICEF, including the establishment of his own charitable fund, has contributed to humanitarian causes affecting children worldwide.

In a 2002 assessment of his Champions League career, he was noted as having become the first British footballer to reach 100 Champions League appearances, a milestone achieved during his loan spells at AC Milan.[19]

His record of 115 England caps, which stood as the highest for an outfield player until 2016, reflects a sustained period of excellence at international level. Across all competitions and levels, Beckham's 523 club appearances and 97 goals, combined with his 17 international goals, provide a statistical record of a career defined by both longevity and impact.
