Daniel Jacobs is an American automotive technician and business owner who founded Daniel Jacobs, LLC, the Southbury, Connecticut, repair shop that trades as Daniel Jacobs Garage. He trained on the Porsche marque at the start of his career in 1980 and built the business around that specialization, later extending it into race preparation and track support for customers who compete in club and amateur motorsport. The shop services Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen and Volvo vehicles for drivers in Southbury and the surrounding Litchfield and New Haven county towns.
Career
Training and early career
Jacobs began his career in 1980 as a factory-trained technician specializing in Porsche vehicles, according to a 2017 profile in the Southbury newspaper Voices. He told the paper that the technicians working for him are factory-trained in Audi and Volkswagen in addition to Porsche.[1]
Daniel Jacobs, LLC
Daniel Jacobs, LLC was registered with the Connecticut Secretary of the State on August 18, 2000. The registration remains active and is classified under automotive repair and lubrication services.[2]
The business operated in Oxford, Connecticut, before moving in 2017 to 1380 Southford Road in Southbury, at the intersection of Routes 67 and 188. Jacobs told Voices that he had kept an eye on the property for years because he considered the location ideal, and that the move let him expand into car sales alongside service. The Southbury facility is known as the Hairy Dog Grrrage.[1]
The shop's published service list covers scheduled maintenance for the European marques it specializes in, together with brake replacement, engine diagnostics, suspension and steering, electrical systems, and heating and air conditioning work. It also offers vehicle pick-up and drop-off.[3] Jacobs has described the specialization as the point of the business: "Unlike some shops that work on anything, we specialize. A nice person who owns a Volkswagen or Porsche knows their car will be fixed right."[1]
Motorsport
Jacobs took up racing services for customers in the late 1990s after a visit to a racetrack. By 2017 he estimated that about 40 percent of the business was "arrive and drive" track support, in which owners meet their prepared cars at the circuit. The shop stores customers' race cars, transports and preps them between sessions, and employs a full-time data engineer alongside driver coaching.[1]
As described in 2017, the racing crew's year began with winter events in Florida and moved through Atlanta, Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen, Virginia International Raceway, Mosport, New Jersey, Road America and Summit Point before finishing at Daytona and Sebring. Jacobs told Voices that a driver the shop supported had recently come from behind to win a race in which most of the field was breaking lap records.[1]
Driver education
Jacobs has been a driving instructor with the Porsche Club of America, and said in 2017 that he had been doing so for 25 years. He has described club driver-education days — structured on-track training with an instructor riding along, distinct from racing — as the way most owners discover what their cars can do: "The car is capable of so much more than you will ever experience on the street."[1]
