Cheryl Whistler is an American microbiologist who serves as a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.[1] Her research addresses bacterial symbiosis and pathogenicity, including studies of the squid symbiont Vibrio fischeri and the pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus.[2]
Education
Whistler earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of California, San Diego, completed between 1986 and 1991.[3] She received a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Oregon State University, completed between 1996 and 2000.[4] She subsequently held postdoctoral positions in Plant Pathology at the University of Arizona (2000-2001), in Microbiology at the University of Hawaii (2001-2003), and in Plant Pathology at the University of California, Davis (2003-2004).[5]
Career
Whistler worked as a Research Assistant in Fermentation Process Research and Development at Genentech Inc. from 1991 to 1994.[6] She has been a professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Biomedical Sciences at the University of New Hampshire since 2004.[7]

According to Semantic Scholar, Whistler has published 51 papers that have been cited a total of 1,680 times, giving her an h-index of 21.[8] Her most cited publication, a 2005 paper on the complete genome sequence of Vibrio fischeri published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, has been cited 374 times.[9]
Whistler's research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. National Science Foundation records list four awards to Whistler totaling $1,639,310, including "The Molecular Basis of Host Adaptation and Origin of New Mutualisms" ($716,601, awarded September 7, 2013) and "Collaborative Research: Use of genome enabled tools to understand symbiosis" ($772,709, awarded June 4, 2009), both at the University of New Hampshire.[10] Additional National Science Foundation awards include "Coordinate regulation of symbiotic-colonization traits" ($50,000, awarded January 31, 2005) and a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Microbial Biology ($100,000, awarded July 15, 2000).[11]
