Chester County is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, bordered by Delaware to the south and forming part of the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area. The county was established in 1682 as one of Pennsylvania's original three counties and derives its name from Chester, England. Historically, the region has been known for its agriculture, particularly mushroom farming, as well as manufacturing industries and more recently, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

The county's proximity to Philadelphia and its well-regarded educational institutions, including numerous private schools and colleges, have contributed to its reputation as an affluent suburban area. Chester County has also played a significant role in American history, with several Revolutionary War sites and a strong tradition in the Underground Railroad movement.
