Category:Famous Real Estate Developers

The neutral encyclopedia of notable people

Property is one of the few fields on this wiki where the same job title covers a family that has held land for three generations, a listed homebuilder, and someone who sells houses on television. This category collects people whose careers were built in real estate, and it divides into three groups that barely overlap: American city developers and landlords, Asian and Australian property dynasties, and the brokers and agents who became reality television personalities.

Background

Real estate development is capital-intensive, locally regulated and slow, which shapes who succeeds at it. Two structures dominate the membership here. The first is the closely held family firm that owns rather than trades: the Durst, LeFrak, Lerner and Tishman Speyer organizations in the United States, Wheelock and the Wharf in Hong Kong, Meriton in Australia. These are private, multi-generational and concentrated in a single metropolitan area. The second is the sponsor or fund structure, where capital is raised from outside investors, deployed and returned, which is how Starwood Capital, Related Companies and the large REITs operate.

A third route into this category has nothing to do with either. Residential brokerage has a low barrier to entry and high public visibility, and cable television built an entire genre on it during the 2010s. Several members here are known primarily for appearing on that television rather than for the transactions.

Notable members

New York accounts for the densest concentration of American developers. Douglas Durst has led the Durst Organization, one of the city's oldest family-owned commercial landlords, since 1992. Richard LeFrak chairs LeFrak; Samuel J. LeFrak chaired the LeFrak Organization. Jerry Speyer co-founded Tishman Speyer and Rob Speyer runs it now. Stephen Ross founded Related Companies and Jeff Blau is its chief executive. Jeff Sutton assembled a Manhattan retail portfolio through Wharton Properties. Jared Kushner worked at the intersection of New York property, media and presidential politics.

Outside New York the category is regional rather than national. Don Chiofaro develops in Boston, Carl Dranoff and Ori Feibush in Philadelphia, Greg DeRosa on Long Island, David Syre in Bellingham, Washington, Seth Levine in New Jersey multifamily, and Austin Van Scoyk in Arizona's Gila Valley. Donald Bren is the chairman and sole owner of the Irvine Company in Southern California. Sam Zell assembled a set of public property companies across five decades, and Barry Sternlicht founded Starwood Capital and then Starwood Hotels. In homebuilding, Bob Toll and Douglas Yearley both led Toll Brothers. Owen Thomas chairs BXP, and Ted Lerner and Mark Lerner built Lerner Enterprises in Washington before buying the Nationals.

The Asian and Australian property groups are the most dynastic part of the category. Li Ka-shing and Lee Shau Kee each built major Hong Kong property groups. Peter Woo chaired Wheelock and the Wharf, and Lui Che Woo built a group spanning construction materials, property, hospitality and casino gaming. Kwek Leng Beng chairs City Developments Limited and the Hong Leong Group in Singapore. On the mainland, Xu Jiayin founded China Evergrande, once among the largest developers in the world, and Yang Huiyan chairs Country Garden. Harry Triguboff founded Meriton in Australia, and Srettha Thavisin ran a Thai property business before serving as prime minister from 2023 to 2024.

Property has also been a common route into American elected office. Donald Trump is the obvious case. Matt Rosendale and Ralph Norman developed property before Congress, Lou Correa and Johnny Isakson both came to politics from business careers, and Eleni Kounalakis ran a development business before becoming lieutenant governor of California. Thomas Ravenel moved in the other direction, from South Carolina politics into development and then reality television.

The television layer

A substantial share of this category is known to the public through Bravo rather than through any building. Gina Kirschenheiter sells real estate and appears on The Real Housewives of Orange County. Danna Bui-Negrete works in Salt Lake City, Stephanie Shojaee in Miami, Marisa Zanuck in Beverly Hills, Kelly Killoren Bensimon brokers in New York, Jeana Keough moved into real estate after a modeling and acting career, and Lisa Wu works as a realtor alongside acting and design. Jarrett Thomas and Jennifer Snowden came through Southern Charm in Charleston. Camille Anderson arrived by a longer route, through pageants, wrestling television and scripted film before the luxury real estate genre.

This layer is worth separating from the developers rather than merging with them. The skills are different, the capital involved is different, and the public record for each group sits in different kinds of sources: securities filings and city planning dockets for one, network press and trade coverage for the other.
