Butkus Stallone (c. 1970 – 1981) was an American Bullmastiff-breed dog who appeared as an animal actor in the films Rocky (1976) and Rocky II (1979). Owned by actor and screenwriter Sylvester Stallone, the dog appeared on screen alongside his owner in the role of Butkus, the pet of fictional boxer Rocky Balboa. The dog's name was a tribute to Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus. Butkus has become a recurring point of interest in retrospectives of Stallone's early career, particularly because of the financial hardship Stallone endured before Rocky was produced — a period during which Stallone, by his own account, was briefly forced to sell the dog because he could not afford to feed him.[1] After Rocky was greenlit and Stallone received payment for the screenplay, he repurchased the dog, and Butkus subsequently appeared in the film and its first sequel.[1] The dog's story has been revisited in interviews and is featured in the 2025 biographical film I Play Rocky, which depicts Stallone's struggles in the period leading up to the production of Rocky.[2]
Background
Butkus was a Bullmastiff owned by Sylvester Stallone during the early 1970s, prior to Stallone's commercial breakthrough as an actor and screenwriter. Stallone named the dog after Dick Butkus, the Chicago Bears middle linebacker who was active in the National Football League from 1965 to 1973 and who was known for his physicality on the field. The choice of name reflected the dog's large, powerful build, a characteristic of the Bullmastiff breed.
Stallone has spoken in multiple interviews about the closeness of his relationship with the dog during a period in which he was struggling to establish himself in the entertainment industry. According to Stallone, in the period before he sold the screenplay for Rocky, he was in such severe financial difficulty that he was unable to afford food for both himself and the animal.[1] Faced with the prospect of being unable to care for the dog, Stallone reportedly stood outside a liquor store in Los Angeles and sold Butkus to a stranger for a small sum — accounts variously cite figures of between $40 and $50 — in order to keep the animal alive and fed.[1]
Sale and recovery
The sale of Butkus has become one of the most frequently retold anecdotes about Stallone's pre-fame years. According to Stallone's own recollections, he parted with the dog because he believed he could no longer provide adequate care, and he has described the decision as among the most difficult of his life.[1] Shortly after the sale, Stallone completed the screenplay for Rocky and sold it to producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, on the condition that he be permitted to star in the film himself.
After receiving payment for the screenplay, Stallone returned to the location where he had sold the dog in an attempt to buy him back. According to the account widely reported in retrospectives of Stallone's career, the new owner refused to part with the dog unless Stallone paid a significantly higher sum than the original sale price. Reports of the repurchase price vary, with figures commonly cited in the range of several thousand dollars — a substantial multiple of the original sale.[1] Stallone agreed to the price and recovered the dog.
The episode has been retold in various interviews given by Stallone over the decades and was a focal point of media coverage in 2022, when Stallone discussed his pre-fame hardships, noting that other animals from the Rocky production — the two turtles named Cuff and Link who appeared in the film — remained in his care decades later.[3]
Film appearances
Rocky (1976)
Butkus appeared in Rocky, released by United Artists in 1976, as the pet dog of the film's protagonist Rocky Balboa, played by Stallone.[4] Within the narrative of the film, the dog functions as a companion to Balboa during his everyday life in the working-class Philadelphia neighborhood depicted in the story. The dog is seen in several scenes set in and around Balboa's apartment and during sequences in which the character walks through the city. The character of the dog in the film is also named Butkus, sharing the animal's real-world name.
The casting of Stallone's own dog in the film has been cited as one of several personal touches that Stallone incorporated into the production. Rocky was a commercial success and won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and its prominence has caused the dog's screen appearances to be revisited regularly in coverage of the film's history.
Rocky II (1979)
Butkus reprised the role of Balboa's pet in Rocky II, released in 1979.[5] The sequel, which Stallone wrote and directed in addition to starring in, continues the story of Rocky Balboa following the events of the first film. The dog appears in scenes depicting Balboa's domestic life with his wife Adrian, played by Talia Shire. Rocky II was released by United Artists and was a commercial success.
Butkus did not appear in subsequent installments of the Rocky franchise. The dog died in 1981, prior to the production of Rocky III (1982).
Legacy
Butkus has remained a recurring figure in retrospective coverage of Sylvester Stallone's career and of the production history of the Rocky franchise. The story of Stallone's sale and recovery of the dog has been cited as an illustration of the financial precariousness Stallone faced before Rocky was produced, and it has been referenced in numerous profiles and interviews over the decades.[1][3]
In October 2025, I Play Rocky, a biographical film about the young Stallone's efforts to secure the lead role in Rocky, began filming in New Jersey.[2] The film, which stars Anthony Ippolito as Stallone and features AnnaSophia Robb, includes scenes depicting Stallone's relationship with Butkus during his pre-fame period. Photography from the production showed Ippolito walking a dog cast to portray Butkus during location filming.[6] Sylvester Stallone publicly endorsed the production, sending a message to the filmmakers and cast that included the phrase "Keep punching."[2]
The dog's appearances in Rocky and Rocky II have also drawn renewed attention in discussions of the longevity of various living elements from the original film's production. The two red-eared slider turtles that appeared in Rocky as Balboa's pets, Cuff and Link, remained in Stallone's care into the 2020s, more than four decades after the original film's release. Stallone has cited the contrast between the turtles' longevity and Butkus's earlier death as an illustration of the unusual lifespans of the animal performers from the production.[3]
The name "Butkus" — derived from Dick Butkus — has remained associated with both the original linebacker and the dog in popular culture references to Stallone's early career. The story of the sale and repurchase of the dog continues to be cited in lists of notable anecdotes from Hollywood history concerning the pre-fame struggles of actors who later achieved major commercial success.
