Blake Ellender Lively (née Brown; born August 25, 1987) is an American actress. The daughter of actor Ernie Lively, she made her professional debut in her father's directorial project Sandman (1998) before her breakthrough role as Bridget in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005). Lively rose to wider prominence as Serena van der Woodsen in the teen drama television series Gossip Girl (2007–2012), which aired on The CW and ran for six seasons.[1]
Beyond Gossip Girl, Lively built a film career that has spanned crime drama, thrillers, romantic comedies, and survival films. Her credits include The Town (2010), Savages (2012), The Age of Adaline (2015), The Shallows (2016), Café Society (2016), A Simple Favor (2018), and It Ends with Us (2024), which she also produced. She has also worked as a director, helming the 2021 music video for Taylor Swift's "I Bet You Think About Me." In addition to acting, Lively has pursued interests in cooking, lifestyle media, and entrepreneurship, and she has been the subject of extensive coverage in fashion and entertainment press throughout her career.[2]

Early Life
Blake Ellender Brown was born on August 25, 1987, in Los Angeles, California, into a family deeply involved in the entertainment industry. Her father, Ernie Lively, was an actor and acting coach, and her mother, Elaine Lively, worked as a talent scout and managed talent. Several of Blake's older siblings and half-siblings also pursued careers in acting, including Eric Lively, Lori Lively, Robyn Lively, and Jason Lively. Although she grew up surrounded by the business, Blake has said in interviews that her parents did not initially encourage her to pursue acting professionally; rather, she was brought along to her father's acting classes because they could not find a babysitter.[2][1]
Lively has described her upbringing as close-knit, with her family preferring to keep her involved in their activities rather than leave her at home. This exposure to the practical side of acting—the classes, auditions, and on-set culture—gave her early familiarity with the craft without formal training of her own. She has spoken about admiring her parents' values around family and hard work, and she frequently cited Martha Stewart as a personal idol from a young age, citing an interest in home, cooking, and lifestyle that would later inform her business interests.[3]
Her professional acting debut came in 1998, when she appeared in Sandman, a project directed by her father. The film was a small production, and Lively has indicated that at the time she did not view acting as her chosen career path. As a teenager, she considered other interests and only later auditioned for roles after encouragement from her brother Eric, who arranged for her to be seen by an agent.[2]
Education
Lively attended Burbank High School in Burbank, California, where she was active in extracurricular activities and served as a class officer. She graduated in 2005. According to interviews she gave shortly after rising to fame, Lively had planned to attend Stanford University and was admitted before she ultimately chose to pursue acting professionally after being cast in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. She has spoken publicly about wanting a traditional college experience, and the decision to pursue the film was framed by her at the time as a deferral rather than a rejection of further education.[4]
Career
Early film roles (2005–2007)
After her uncredited debut in Sandman (1998), Lively's first major role came in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005), in which she played Bridget Vreeland, one of four close friends who share a pair of jeans that fits each of them despite their different body types. The film was based on the novel by Ann Brashares and was released by Warner Bros. Pictures. The success of the film led to a sequel, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, released in 2008, with Lively reprising the role.[5]
During this period, Lively also appeared in smaller roles in Accepted (2006) and Simon Says (2006), gradually building a profile as a young actress capable of carrying both ensemble and supporting parts.
Gossip Girl and television stardom (2007–2012)
In 2007, Lively was cast as Serena van der Woodsen in the CW television series Gossip Girl, based on the novels by Cecily von Ziegesar. The series followed a group of privileged teenagers attending an elite private school on Manhattan's Upper East Side, and it became a defining cultural touchstone of late-2000s teen television. Gossip Girl ran for six seasons before concluding with a two-hour series finale that aired on December 17, 2012.[6]
Lively's role as Serena, a glamorous and troubled socialite, brought her sustained press attention and established her as one of the prominent young actresses on television. The show also became a launching pad for fashion endorsements and editorial coverage that would shape much of her public image during and after its run. While starring on the series, Lively continued to take film roles, balancing the demands of network television with a developing film career.
Film career during and after Gossip Girl (2008–2014)
While Gossip Girl was on the air, Lively appeared in several feature films. She had a small role in the anthology romance New York, I Love You (2008) and a supporting role in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009), directed by Rebecca Miller, in which she played a younger version of the title character.[7][8]
In 2010, she appeared in Ben Affleck's crime drama The Town, in which she played Krista Coughlin, the troubled sister of a bank robber. The role marked a departure from her television image and drew positive critical attention. That same year, she appeared in promotional and comedy work, including a cameo in The Lonely Island's music video "I Just Had Sex," released in late 2010.[9]
In 2011, Lively played Carol Ferris in Green Lantern, the Warner Bros. superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds. While the film received a mixed critical response, its production led to Lively meeting Reynolds, whom she later married.[10] In 2012, she starred in Oliver Stone's Savages, a thriller co-starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Taylor Kitsch, playing a young woman caught between two boyfriends and a Mexican drug cartel.[11]
Leading roles and producing (2015–present)
After the conclusion of Gossip Girl, Lively transitioned to leading film roles. In The Age of Adaline (2015), she played a woman who stops aging after a freak accident, a part that required her to portray a character across multiple decades of the 20th century. The following year, she starred in The Shallows (2016), a survival thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, in which she played a surfer stranded on a rock as a great white shark circles. The film was a commercial success and was widely noted as a showcase for Lively as a sole on-screen lead. She also appeared in Woody Allen's period comedy Café Society (2016).
In 2018, Lively starred opposite Anna Kendrick in the comedy thriller A Simple Favor, directed by Paul Feig. Playing the mysterious Emily Nelson, Lively received attention for the film's stylized wardrobe and her performance in a darker comedic register. A sequel was released in 2025.
In 2021, Lively expanded her work behind the camera by directing the music video for Taylor Swift's "I Bet You Think About Me" from Swift's re-recorded album Red (Taylor's Version). The video marked her directorial debut.
Lively produced and starred in the romantic drama It Ends with Us (2024), based on the novel by Colleen Hoover. She played Lily Bloom opposite Justin Baldoni, who also directed the film. The production and subsequent press tour led to a high-profile legal dispute between Lively and Baldoni, with each party filing claims against the other. In 2026, the parties reached a settlement. According to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, the case concluded with Baldoni paying legal fees but with no additional financial concession to Lively, an outcome characterized in the press as ending Lively's broader legal theory unsuccessfully.[12] Baldoni's attorney, Bryan Freedman, subsequently released the full text of the settlement publicly, saying he did so "to allow people finality."[13][14][15] In subsequent court filings, Lively requested additional time from the court to present further materials related to the case.[16][17]
Fashion, lifestyle, and other ventures
Throughout her career, Lively has been a prominent presence in fashion media. She has been featured in publications including W, Vogue, and InStyle, and has appeared at major industry events such as the Met Gala.[18][19] In 2013, she joined Gucci's "Chime for Change" initiative alongside Beyoncé, Halle Berry, and Zoe Saldana, an advocacy effort focused on issues affecting women and girls.[20]
Lively also briefly operated a lifestyle website called Preserve, which launched in 2014 and combined editorial content with e-commerce. The site closed within a few years, with Lively publicly stating that the project had not met its goals.
Personal Life
Lively met Ryan Reynolds on the set of Green Lantern in 2010, and the two began dating in 2011. They married in September 2012. The couple has four children together.[21] Lively has spoken in interviews about her interest in family life, cooking, and home design, and she has cited Martha Stewart as a longtime influence.[3][22]
Lively and Reynolds have primarily resided in the New York area. In 2026, the couple resolved a legal dispute involving approximately $2 million in claimed debts from a contractor working on an unfinished mansion in New York, allowing construction on the home to resume.[23] Her home and kitchen have also been the subject of features in design publications, including Elle Decor.[24]
Recognition
Lively has been included in numerous lists ranking influential figures in entertainment and fashion. During her time on Gossip Girl, she became a frequent presence on best-dressed lists and at major industry events. Beyond fashion recognition, her film performances have drawn industry attention: her work in The Town (2010) and The Age of Adaline (2015) was singled out by critics as marking her transition from television star to film lead, and The Shallows (2016) was cited as evidence of her ability to anchor a film as the sole on-screen performer.[25]
In 2013, she was selected as one of the celebrity ambassadors for Gucci's "Chime for Change" campaign, alongside major figures in music and film, broadening her public profile beyond acting into advocacy.[20] She has also been featured in extended profiles by W Magazine, Women's Wear Daily, InStyle, and Marie Claire, among others, reflecting sustained coverage by mainstream lifestyle and fashion press over more than a decade.[2][18][19][26]
