Bethenny Frankel (born November 4, 1970), also known as Bethenny Parisella, is an American entrepreneur, television personality, philanthropist, and author. She became famous as the runner-up on NBC's The Apprentice: Martha Stewart in 2005, then went on to become one of the most recognizable faces on Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York City, appearing in seasons one through three from 2008 to 2010, then returning for seasons seven through eleven from 2015 to 2019.[1] What really set her apart, though, was her business empire. Skinnygirl started as a low-calorie margarita and grew into a full lifestyle brand with everything from supplements to shapewear. She's also the founder of BStrong, a disaster relief organization, and has written four self-help books. Her work spans talk show hosting, podcasting, and digital content creation, making her one of the most commercially successful reality TV personalities ever.
Early Life
Born November 4, 1970, in Queens, New York, Frankel grew up in a home marked by instability.[1] She's been open about her turbulent childhood and difficult family dynamics, both on television and in her writings. Not an easy start.
She attended Pine Crest School, a private prep school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[2] That experience provided structure during what she describes as an otherwise chaotic upbringing. After finishing high school in Florida, she headed northeast for college.
Education
Frankel started at Boston University before transferring to New York University, where she earned her BA.[1] Her time at NYU coincided with her early attempts to establish herself in the city, which would later become central to her brand and career. She also studied at the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York, building the foundation for her later work in food and wellness.[3]
Career
Early Career and The Apprentice: Martha Stewart
Before her reality TV breakthrough, Frankel worked in various roles within entertainment and food in New York City. Her culinary training shaped her early ventures in natural food and health, and she was looking for ways to combine her interests in business, food, and media.
In 2005, she competed on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, the NBC spin-off of Donald Trump's The Apprentice hosted by Martha Stewart. Frankel came in second. The show gave her significant public exposure and made her a recognizable face in reality television.[4] It became the launching pad for everything that followed.
The Real Housewives of New York City
When Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York City premiered in 2008, Frankel was there from the start. She stayed for the first three seasons through 2010, and she became one of the franchise's most popular and talked-about cast members.[1] People were drawn to her sharp humor, candor about her personal struggles, and her openness about her complicated family background and business ambitions.
During those early seasons, she used the platform to push her emerging Skinnygirl brand, especially the Skinnygirl Margarita. That integration of business with reality TV exposure worked brilliantly and became a template other personalities would copy.
After leaving following season three in 2010, Frankel returned for season seven in 2015.[5] It was a significant moment for the franchise. She remained through season eleven, departing once again in 2019, and she continued to be central to the show's storylines and remained one of the most recognizable members of the entire Real Housewives franchise.
In 2026, Frankel addressed her decision not to participate in an upcoming E! docuseries featuring original cast members, publicly explaining her reasons for skipping the spinoff.[6]
Skinnygirl
Skinnygirl represents her biggest business achievement. The brand started with the Skinnygirl Margarita, a pre-mixed, low-calorie cocktail that Frankel developed and brought to market. It tapped into demand for lower-calorie alcoholic drinks and took off quickly.
In 2011, Frankel sold the cocktail line to Beam Global (later Beam Suntory) in a deal that got major business press coverage. Forbes reported on the financial details and noted the numbers held up under scrutiny, representing a substantial payday for Frankel.[7] Forbes also named her one of the top-earning celebrities in 2011, highlighting her as one of the most financially successful reality TV figures.[8]
She kept the Skinnygirl brand name after selling the cocktail line and expanded it into a broader lifestyle brand covering food products, supplements, shapewear, and other consumer goods. The brand became tied to her public image and her message about practical, accessible health and wellness.
Spin-Off Series and Talk Show
Her popularity on The Real Housewives of New York City led to multiple spin-offs. Bethenny Getting Married? premiered on Bravo in 2010, documenting her wedding and early married life. It was later retitled Bethenny Ever After and ran for three seasons from 2010 to 2012.
In 2013, she launched Bethenny, a daytime talk show on Fox. The show aired for one season, from 2013 to 2014, then got cancelled. It showed her ambition to move beyond reality TV into mainstream talk show hosting, even though it didn't last.
She starred alongside real estate broker Fredrik Eklund in Bethenny & Fredrik, a Bravo series in 2018 that followed them on a real estate project. One season and done.
In 2021, Frankel headlined The Big Shot with Bethenny, a reality competition on HBO Max where contestants competed for a spot on her business team. Again, just one season.
Digital Media and Content Creation
In recent years, Frankel's built a substantial following on TikTok and YouTube, where she's known for candid product reviews, lifestyle content, and commentary on consumer goods. Her beauty and skincare videos have gotten serious attention. In March 2026, a video where she accidentally sliced her face with a glass facial cupping tool she'd bought online went viral and got coverage from multiple outlets.[9][10][11][12]
She's also hosted two podcasts and used her digital platforms to push for consumer transparency and critique products she thinks are misleading or poorly made. Her move to digital media reflects how reality TV personalities now stay relevant through online platforms independent of traditional networks.
Philanthropy and BStrong
Frankel founded BStrong, a disaster relief initiative that provides aid after natural disasters and humanitarian crises. The organization has responded to hurricanes, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events, distributing supplies, financial assistance, and logistical support to affected communities. It's become a major part of her identity beyond entertainment and business.
Published Works
She's authored four self-help books covering health, wellness, diet, and personal empowerment. They reflect the same direct, practical style that defines her public persona. Health and diet advice have been recurring themes in her media work and publications.[13]
Personal Life
Her personal life has been a major subject of public interest, largely because it's played such a large role in her reality television appearances. She married Jason Hoppy in March 2010, and Bravo documented the wedding on Bethenny Getting Married?.[14] Their daughter was born in May 2010.[15]
Frankel and Hoppy separated in December 2012.[16] Their divorce became acrimonious and dragged on publicly for years. As of March 2026, the legal disputes were still ongoing, with a former attorney filing a $2 million claim against Frankel related to issues stemming from the divorce proceedings.[17]
Frankel has spoken publicly about a severe fish allergy that's caused life-threatening reactions. She described nearly dying from an allergic reaction after fish exposure.[18] She's since become an advocate for food allergy awareness and criticized airlines for serving fish on flights, citing the risk to passengers with severe allergies.[19]
Recognition
Her career has been recognized primarily through commercial success and media presence rather than through traditional awards. Forbes named her to its Celebrity 100 list in 2011, citing her earnings from Skinnygirl and her television career.[20] The Skinnygirl cocktail sale to Beam Global was one of the biggest business transactions by a reality TV personality, establishing Frankel as a case study in turning reality fame into entrepreneurial success.
Her work with BStrong has drawn recognition for disaster relief contributions, and her advocacy on food allergies and consumer product safety has gotten media attention.
In digital media, Frankel's become a prominent voice in beauty and product reviews, with her social media content regularly appearing in mainstream entertainment and lifestyle publications.[21]
Legacy
Frankel is widely cited as one of the most commercially successful personalities from reality television. Her path from The Apprentice: Martha Stewart contestant to entrepreneur and brand builder has been noted in business and entertainment media as an example of how reality TV can become a platform for larger commercial ventures.
The Skinnygirl brand, particularly the cocktail sale, was a milestone in monetizing reality TV fame. It showed that reality personalities could build and sell consumer product brands worth tens of millions of dollars, and it sparked a wave of similar efforts by other TV personalities.
Her 2015 return to The Real Housewives of New York City after a five-year absence was notable within the franchise's history and showed her enduring relevance to the series and its audience.[22]
Her shift to social media content in the 2020s reflects broader trends as established TV personalities have moved toward direct audience engagement through TikTok, YouTube, and podcasting. Frankel's candid product reviews and willingness to publicly critique brands positioned her as a consumer advocate in digital media.
The Baltimore Sun profiled her approach to health and wellness, noting her influence in promoting practical dietary and lifestyle advice to mainstream audiences.[23]
