Benoît Potier (French pronunciation: [bənwa potje]; born 3 September 1957) is a French industrialist who's shaped Air Liquide, the French multinational industrial gas company, over more than two decades. He ran Air Liquide as Chief Executive Officer from 2001 to 2022, overseeing massive expansion of the company's global operations and positioning it as a leader in the clean energy transition, especially through hydrogen technology investments. Since June 2022, he's served as Chairman of the Board of Directors, following a governance shift that split the Chairman and CEO roles. Throughout his career, Potier has taken prominent board and advisory positions at major international corporations, including seats with the European Round Table of Industrialists, Temasek Holdings, and Siemens. His time at Air Liquide, which started in the mid-1980s, tracks the company's transformation from a traditional industrial gas supplier into a diversified technology and services outfit with a strong focus on energy transition and sustainability.
Early Life
Potier was born 3 September 1957 in Mulhouse, a city in the Alsace region of eastern France.[1] Mulhouse had a long history as an industrial center built on textiles and mechanical engineering. That backdrop would later resonate with his career in industrial technology and manufacturing.
Details about his family and childhood have stayed largely private. That's typical for senior French business figures.
His early years in Alsace, with its distinctive Franco-German cultural heritage, shaped his comfort with international and cross-cultural business environments, according to French press profiles.[2] Growing up in a bilingual, industrially focused region gave him exposure that proved valuable later on. Managing operations across multiple countries and continents felt natural.
Education
He attended two of France's most prestigious institutions. First came École Centrale Paris (now CentraleSupélec), a leading Grandes écoles for engineering in France, where he earned an engineering degree.[3] École Centrale Paris has produced many of France's top industrial and business leaders. Its curriculum emphasizes broad, interdisciplinary approaches to engineering and technology management.
Then came INSEAD, the international graduate business school based in Fontainebleau, where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA).[4] INSEAD's focus on global strategy and international management complemented his engineering training well. It prepared him for leadership in multinational corporate environments. This combination of elite engineering education and an MBA from a globally respected business school remains a common path for senior executives at major French corporations.
Career
Early Career at Air Liquide
Potier joined Air Liquide in the mid-1980s and steadily climbed the ranks over the following decades.[5] Air Liquide was founded in 1902 by Paul Delorme and Georges Claude. It's one of the world's largest suppliers of industrial gases, serving healthcare, electronics, food processing, and energy industries. His early roles spanned several operational and strategic functions, giving him broad exposure to the company's diverse business lines and international operations.
His advancement within Air Liquide reflected the company's tradition of promoting leaders with deep institutional knowledge. Over roughly fifteen years, Potier progressed through positions of increasing responsibility. He gained experience in both operational management of industrial gas production and strategic direction of the company's business portfolio.
CEO of Air Liquide (2001–2022)
In 2001, Potier was appointed CEO of Air Liquide, a company already major on the global stage but destined for substantial transformation under his stewardship.[6] His tenure lasted more than two decades until 2022. It was one of the longest tenures among leaders of major CAC 40 companies and marked by several strategic transformations.
Air Liquide pursued aggressive international expansion and diversification under his leadership. The company strengthened its presence in high-growth markets, especially in Asia and emerging economies, while also expanding healthcare and high-technology activities. Potier oversaw significant acquisitions and capital investments aimed at broadening geographic footprint and technological capabilities.
What really defined Potier's strategic vision was his early commitment to hydrogen as a clean energy vector. Long before hydrogen became mainstream in energy policy discussions, Potier positioned Air Liquide as a hydrogen leader in production, distribution, and technology development.[7] French media called this a long-term conviction that set him apart from his peers. Le Journal du Dimanche described him as "the man who believed in hydrogen," capturing his persistence in championing the molecule's potential for energy transition.[7]
Potier was a co-founder of the Hydrogen Council, a global CEO-led initiative launched in January 2017 at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The council brought together leading companies from energy, transport, and industrial sectors to advocate for hydrogen's role in the global energy transition.[8] Air Liquide was among thirteen founding members. Alstom, Anglo American, BMW Group, Daimler, Engie, Honda, Hyundai, Kawasaki, Shell, Linde, The Linde Group, and Total joined as well.[9] The council's creation was a major milestone in hydrogen advocacy. Potier played a central role in its establishment and early governance.
Air Liquide also emphasized sustainability and climate goals during Potier's tenure. The company set targets for cutting carbon emissions and invested in carbon capture, low-carbon hydrogen production, and energy efficiency across its operations. These initiatives aligned with broader European and global policy trends but also reflected Potier's personal strategic emphasis. He wanted to position Air Liquide at the intersection of industrial performance and environmental responsibility.
In 2022, Air Liquide launched its strategic plan ADVANCE, designed to guide the company through 2025. The plan explicitly linked financial performance with extra-financial objectives, including environmental and social targets. It represented a formalization of the sustainability-oriented direction developing under Potier's leadership.[10]
Governance Transition and Chairmanship (2022–present)
On 1 December 2021, Air Liquide's Board announced a planned governance transition. The Board's Appointments and Governance Committee recommended that Potier step down as CEO to focus exclusively on the Chairman role, effective 1 June 2022.[11] This separated the Chairman and CEO roles, a governance reform that French corporate governance advocates had discussed for some time.
François Jackow was named Potier's successor as CEO.[12] A long-serving Air Liquide executive, Jackow took over operational leadership while Potier retained strategic oversight and governance responsibilities as Chairman. Le Figaro reported on the transition, noting Potier was proposed to remain as Chairman under the new structure.[13]
In covering the succession, gasworld noted that Potier was "bringing the curtain down on more than 20 years of leadership as CEO."[12] That underscores the length and significance of his tenure atop one of France's largest industrial companies.
Since becoming chairman, Potier has presided over Air Liquide's Annual General Meetings. He chaired the 2024 Annual General Meeting on 30 April 2024 in Paris, with CEO François Jackow present.[14] He also chaired the 2025 Annual General Meeting held 6 May 2025 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.[15][16]
Under combined leadership. Potier and Jackow have continued emphasizing financial performance alongside sustainability commitments. In 2025, Air Liquide described its business model as "demonstrating its strength and resilience in response to the challenges of multiple transitions" in a rapidly changing world.[17]
Board Memberships and Advisory Roles
Beyond Air Liquide, Potier has held significant board and advisory positions in the international business community. He served as a member of the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT). This influential forum brings together chief executives and chairmen of major European multinational companies to engage with European policy-makers on competitiveness and industrial policy.[18]
He sat on the Supervisory Board of Siemens, the German industrial and technology conglomerate, adding international governance experience to his portfolio.[19] He also joined the International Advisory Panel of Temasek Holdings, the Singapore-based sovereign wealth fund, reflecting his recognized expertise in global industrial strategy.[20]
Potier participated in B20 activities as an Air Liquide representative. The B20 is the official dialogue platform where the business community engages with G20 governments.[21]
Financial Times market data lists him as a director of Air Liquide, reflecting the company's prominence among listed European industrial firms.[22]
He's also served as a non-executive director of Unilever, the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods multinational. Unilever's 2024 annual report lists him among its board members.[23]
Personal Life
Potier has kept his personal life relatively private. That's consistent with conventions among senior French business leaders. Public sources say little about his family or personal activities outside professional responsibilities. He lives in the Paris area, where Air Liquide is headquartered.[24]
French press profiles, including in La Tribune, note his measured and discreet public persona. This contrasts with the high profile of some of his peers among France's largest listed company leaders.[25]
Legacy
Potier's career is deeply intertwined with Air Liquide's modern history. His more than two decades as CEO ranks among the longest tenures at the helm of a CAC 40 company. The period coincided with substantial growth, international expansion, and strategic reorientation. Under his leadership, Air Liquide evolved from a company focused on traditional industrial gas supply into a diversified group with growing activities in healthcare, electronics, and energy transition technologies.
His most distinctive legacy is championing hydrogen as a clean energy vector. When hydrogen was a niche interest among energy strategists, Potier invested company resources in hydrogen production infrastructure, distribution networks, and research. His co-founding of the Hydrogen Council in 2017 helped place hydrogen on the global energy agenda. It brought together a coalition of major industrial and energy companies to advocate for its adoption.[7][26] As governments and international organizations increasingly embraced hydrogen strategies in the 2020s, his early advocacy came to look remarkably prescient.
The 2022 governance transition also marks significant evolution. Separating Chairman and CEO roles at Air Liquide was a major step forward. By retaining the chairmanship while handing operational leadership to François Jackow, Potier ensured continuity. He also modernized the leadership structure in line with evolving French and European corporate governance standards.[11]
Through board service at Siemens and Unilever, advisory work at Temasek, and participation in forums like the European Round Table of Industrialists and the B20, Potier has actively shaped European and global industrial policy discourse. His career shows the trajectory of a French industrial leader who combined deep technical expertise with strategic ambition on a world stage.
