Anne Jacqueline Hathaway (born November 12, 1982) is an American actress whose career has spanned family comedies, prestige dramas, blockbuster franchises, and stage musicals. After breaking through as a teenager in the Disney comedy The Princess Diaries (2001), she transitioned into mature dramatic roles and went on to receive an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Her films have grossed billions of dollars worldwide, and she was among the world's highest-paid actresses in 2015.

Hathaway's filmography includes Brokeback Mountain (2005), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Rachel Getting Married (2008), Alice in Wonderland (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Les Misérables (2012), Interstellar (2014), The Intern (2015), Ocean's 8 (2018), and The Idea of You (2024). On television, she starred in the miniseries WeCrashed (2022) and won a Primetime Emmy Award for a guest voice role on The Simpsons. Off-screen, she serves on the board of the Lollipop Theatre Network and is a UN Women goodwill ambassador advocating for gender equality.

Early Life

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York.[1] She was raised in a household with theatrical influences; her mother had performed as an actress, and the family environment encouraged her interest in performance from an early age.[1] Hathaway performed in school plays during her teenage years and pursued formal acting training while still in high school.[1]

As a teenager, Hathaway was cast in the short-lived television series Get Real (1999–2000), which served as her first major on-screen credit. The role led to her being noticed by film casting directors, and by the time she finished high school she had been cast in the lead role of Mia Thermopolis in the Disney comedy The Princess Diaries (2001), directed by Garry Marshall. The film became a commercial success and established her as a recognizable young performer.[2]

In interviews, Hathaway has discussed how her early exposure to theater shaped her approach to acting, including her commitment to studying acting technique alongside her academic work.[1] She continued to balance schoolwork with film roles during her late teens, an arrangement that drew attention given that she was simultaneously pursuing higher education.[1]

Education

Hathaway enrolled at Vassar College after high school but later transferred to the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, where she pursued studies in English and women's studies alongside her acting work.[1] She has discussed in interviews her interest in political science as a secondary academic pursuit at the time she began booking film roles.[1] Her academic commitments were balanced against an increasingly active film career, and she continued formal acting training, including study of musical theater, throughout this period.[2]

Career

Early roles and family films (1999–2004)

Following Get Real and The Princess Diaries, Hathaway appeared in a succession of family-oriented films that built on her image as a young leading lady. She starred in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) and the fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted (2004), both of which targeted a younger audience.[2] The string of family films established her as a bankable lead, but she later expressed an interest in moving toward more adult material.[3]

Transition to dramatic roles (2005–2008)

Hathaway made a marked shift in her career in 2005 when she appeared in Ang Lee's drama Brokeback Mountain, playing the wife of one of the film's central characters. The film was critically acclaimed and demonstrated her ability to take on mature material.[3] She followed this with the comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada (2006), in which she played Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist who becomes assistant to a powerful fashion magazine editor played by Meryl Streep. The film was her largest commercial success up to that point and significantly raised her industry profile.[2]

In 2008, Hathaway starred opposite Steve Carell in the spy comedy Get Smart, a theatrical adaptation of the 1960s television series, which was another commercial success.[3] The same year, she received widespread critical attention for her performance as Kym, a recovering addict returning home from rehab for her sister's wedding, in Jonathan Demme's drama Rachel Getting Married. The role earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.[4] Around this period she also appeared on stage in New York theater productions, including a role in a Shakespeare in the Park production that drew critical notice.[5]

Commercial expansion and The Dark Knight Rises (2009–2012)

Hathaway continued to alternate between commercial and dramatic projects in the years following her Oscar nomination. She co-starred in the romantic comedy Bride Wars (2009) opposite Kate Hudson, and appeared in the ensemble romance Valentine's Day (2010).[6] The same year, she starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the romantic drama Love & Other Drugs (2010), and provided the voice of the White Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), a major commercial success.[7]

In 2011, Hathaway co-hosted the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony alongside James Franco.[8] She also starred in the romantic drama One Day (2011), based on the novel by David Nicholls, opposite Jim Sturgess.[9][10]

In 2012, Hathaway appeared as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, the conclusion of Nolan's Batman trilogy. The film was her highest-grossing release.[11][12] Her casting and performance were the subject of extensive coverage during the film's release.[13]

Academy Award win and later work (2012–2020)

Later in 2012, Hathaway played Fantine, a factory worker turned prostitute dying of tuberculosis, in Tom Hooper's screen adaptation of the musical Les Misérables. Her performance, which included her singing the film's signature ballad "I Dreamed a Dream", earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as a Golden Globe Award and a British Academy Film Award.[14]

In 2014, Hathaway starred opposite Matthew McConaughey in Christopher Nolan's science-fiction epic Interstellar, playing astronaut Amelia Brand. She followed this with the comedy-drama The Intern (2015), in which she played the founder of an online fashion company opposite Robert De Niro.[15] She subsequently appeared in the heist film Ocean's 8 (2018) as part of an ensemble cast, and in the comedy The Hustle (2019) opposite Rebel Wilson.[15]

Hathaway has also worked extensively in voice acting and on soundtracks, with vocal recordings credited to her on various film projects.[16] She won a Primetime Emmy Award for a guest voice role on the animated series The Simpsons, listed among the nominees and winners of that year's ceremony.[17]

Recent projects (2021–present)

In 2022, Hathaway starred opposite Jared Leto in the Apple TV+ miniseries WeCrashed, a dramatization of the rise and fall of the WeWork company, in which she played Rebekah Neumann. In 2024, she starred in the romantic drama The Idea of You, adapted from the novel of the same name.

Hathaway has been cast as Penelope in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, and Charlize Theron, with the project receiving early publicity coverage in 2026.[18] She is also attached to the genre film The End of Oak Street, directed by David Robert Mitchell, in which she stars alongside Ewan McGregor.[19] A sequel to The Devil Wears Prada is also among her recent projects.[20]

Personal Life

Hathaway has two children.[15] She has spoken publicly about her experiences with health and vision; in a 2026 podcast appearance on The New York Times' Popcast, she disclosed that she had been legally blind in one eye for roughly a decade during her 30s before receiving treatment.[20]

Hathaway has been active in philanthropic and advocacy work. She serves on the board of the Lollipop Theatre Network, an organization that brings film screenings to children in hospitals, and she serves as a UN Women goodwill ambassador, in which capacity she has advocated for gender equality and policies supporting paid parental leave.

Hathaway's public appearances and personal style are regularly covered by fashion press. In 2026, multiple outlets covered her wardrobe choices in connection with broader summer style trends, including features on her footwear preferences and casual two-piece sets.[21][22][23]

Recognition

Hathaway's accolades include an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Fantine in Les Misérables (2012), having previously received a Best Actress nomination for Rachel Getting Married (2008).[14][4]

Her Primetime Emmy Award was received for a guest voice performance on The Simpsons, recognized at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards.[17] She has also been recognized at the Saturn Awards, where her performances in genre films received nominations.[24]

Hathaway co-hosted the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011 with James Franco, a role for which she received mixed critical reception at the time.[8] Her films have collectively grossed over $6.8 billion worldwide, and she was reported among the world's highest-paid actresses in 2015. Major publications, including Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, and The New York Times, have profiled her career at various stages.[13][3][1] Her catalog entry in the Virtual International Authority File records her as an authoritative subject across library systems.[25]

Legacy

Hathaway's career arc — from teen lead in family films to Academy Award–winning dramatic actress — has been the subject of recurring industry analysis. Her transition from Disney comedies to roles such as Kym in Rachel Getting Married and Fantine in Les Misérables is frequently cited as an example of how performers can reposition themselves within a few years.[3][13] Her dual presence in major franchises (The Dark Knight Rises, Alice in Wonderland) and in director-driven auteur projects (Brokeback Mountain, Interstellar) has placed her among a relatively small group of contemporary actresses with sustained presence in both commercial and prestige cinema.[15]

Her casting as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises generated extensive commentary at the time of the film's release; she had previously auditioned for the role of Harley Quinn during the production of The Dark Knight, an audition that resurfaced in retrospective coverage of her involvement in the franchise.[26][11] Her performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" in Les Misérables, recorded live on set rather than dubbed in post-production, was widely cited in discussions of the production technique of live-singing in film musicals.[14]

Beyond film, Hathaway's advocacy work as a UN Women goodwill ambassador has included public statements on workplace gender equality and parental leave, and her ongoing service to the Lollipop Theatre Network has continued to feature in coverage of her public profile. Her selection for the role of Penelope in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey represents her third collaboration with the director, following The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.[18]
