Alison Brody is an ecologist and professor of biology at the University of Vermont, where she has been on the faculty of the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station since 1995.[1] Her research addresses plant-pollinator interactions, plant-herbivore interactions, and the transmission of viruses and pathogens between managed honey bees and wild bumblebees.[2]
Education
Brody earned a master's degree in systematics and ecology at the University of Kansas between 1981 and 1984.[3] She received a PhD in entomology from the University of California, Davis, completed between 1986 and 1991.[4] She subsequently completed a postdoctoral appointment in biology at Stanford University from 1993 to 1995.[5]
Career
Brody joined the University of Vermont in 1995 as a professor in the Department of Biology, affiliated with the Vermont Agricultural Experiment Station.[6]
Research
Brody's published work, indexed by Semantic Scholar, comprises 59 papers with a combined total of 3,505 citations and an h-index of 31.[7] Her studies have examined the transmission of deformed wing virus and other RNA viruses between honey bees (Apis mellifera) and wild bumblebees (Bombus spp.) through shared flowers, the effects of ericoid and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on plant reproduction, and interactions between herbivores, pollinators, and plants in systems ranging from East African savannas to montane wildflower communities.[8]
Brody has received five awards from the National Science Foundation totaling $1,118,418.[9] These include a 2018 award for research linking above- and belowground interactions in highbush blueberry ($199,528), a 2005 collaborative award examining the effects of termites and ungulates on biodiversity in East African savannas ($505,000), a 1998 award studying nectar robbers, pollinators, and plants ($150,390), and two earlier awards, received while at the University of Vermont in 1995 and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1994, examining the reciprocal effects of pre-dispersal seed predation and pollination in co-occurring plant species ($103,500 and $160,000, respectively).[10]
