Alice Bruce is an American chemist and professor of chemistry at the University of Maine. Her research has focused on the coordination chemistry of gold(I) complexes, including their electronic spectroscopy, structure, and applications relevant to antiarthritic gold drugs.[1]

Education

Bruce received her PhD in chemistry from Columbia College at Columbia University.[2]

Bruce is a professor of chemistry at the University of Maine.[3]

Research

Bruce's published work spans studies of dinuclear gold(I) complexes, including their gold(I)-gold(I) interactions in solution and in the solid state, examined through electronic spectroscopy and solid-state EXAFS and luminescence methods.[4][5] She has also studied the electrochemical and chemical oxidation of gold(I) thiolate phosphine complexes and the formation of gold clusters and disulfides, including work on the oxidation of the antiarthritic gold drug auranofin.[6][7] Her earlier research addressed the coordination chemistry of molybdenum with tetradentate ligands containing N,S-donor sets.[8][9] More recent work includes a collaborative study on metal complexes as antifungal agents, published in JACS Au.[10]

According to Semantic Scholar, Bruce has published 84 papers that have been cited a total of 1,305 times, with an h-index of 20.[11]

Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, including a grant for "US-Russia Cooperative Research: Designing Gold(I) Complexes for New Materials" ($46,063, awarded July 15, 1998) and a grant for "Synthesis and Reactivity of Low Valent Transition Metal Imido Complexes" ($12,000, awarded April 3, 1989), both at the University of Maine.[12] She has also received funding from the National Institutes of Health, including a Small Instrumentation Grant ($5,000) and a grant titled "Chemistry of Gold-I & Sulfur, Application to Arthritis" ($106,226), both at the University of Maine.[13]
